So I just found out about a game called Star Citizen earlier this week through a friend, and I haven't stopped reading about it since. It's the largest crowdfunded game ever, actually... the largest crowdfunded project EVER! Its raised over 74 million. Created by Chris Roberts, who was behind Wing Commander and founded Digital Anvil, this all-out space sim looks to blur genre lines and covers FPS, flight-sim, and MMORPG. Due to drop in 2016, but in alpha stage now with a dogfighting module called Arena Commander. No pay-to-win BS as far as I can tell (though backers can be rewarded with some of the larger ships when the Persistent Universe releases, through a generous pledge), and no repetitive grinding just to be able to have fun. Something else that excites me is his goal is to make the game look amazing, a standard against which other games will be judged (a la Crysis).
Another awesome thing about this game: no big publisher, trying to push it out before it's ready. I also love the fact that Chris insisted on heavy community involvement from the very beginning.
Alluding to Star Citizen's online universe, Chris Roberts highlights the importance of player-driven content: "It's like a sandbox for everybody, and occasionally you'll sprinkle in little bits of scripted content to give a bit of character, but you're letting a lot of the players generate the intrigue and the drama." The economy system is described as being NPC-driven, however, with players slowly taking over to ensure changes in game population do not disrupt the economy."
Star Citizen will continue to develop after commercial release via a combination of emergent gameplay generated by players and new content which will be developed by Cloud Imperium Games on an ongoing basis. Players and organizations will be able to own certain production nodes including factories and mines. Capital ships can be owned and operated by players. Select "lawless planets" will feature ground based combat using infantry style weapons. Personal armaments can also be used to board disabled ships and stations.
A very cool video that somewhat sums up my hype, narrated by a German guy who sound Japanese:
A preview of the FPS element from PAX:
A few of the AMAZING ships from the Star Citizen universe:
Some game lore, for those interested in that kind of stuff:
So if this sounds like your thing, head over to the forums at forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/, and poke around some more. I can't stop reading. I've always had a thing for exploration, so I'm thinking of picking up a Freelancer DUR... looks to be a very well rounded ship, capable of performing many roles, while being a cozy lil' space RV for me and the wifey:
