Its been a while since I've posted a story to the Den forums... This one is a good one with a (spoiler alert) happy ending. The fun for me though? It was in the journey.
So I've been really sick for a week now. Like sick-in-bed-yet-can't-sleep-whole-body-aches-when-I-move-bad. Some people might think that I'm a friendly guy. When I'm sick I get pissed. You don't want to talk to me. You don't want to have an internet conversation with me. After another week of not getting getting gjallarhorn for my troubles... I finally got straight upset with my Destiny experience. But yesterday I decided I felt like playing some video games. Hell... I decided I was going to try to solo Crota himself at 10 in the morning. I'm going to give this my very best. Made myself some chicken soup. Emailed my professors to tell em I was sick. Fired up twitch. Got my big boy pants on. You can see my entire pathetic raid run on my twitch channel.
First I decided I should have a plan. I did some research on if it was even possible to do a run without gjallarhorn. I had remembered watching a video of someone do it as a warlock...but never as a titan. I figured hey... I can't remember anybody trying it with the no primary infinite heavy ammo glitch that I use on my titan. It would sure make killing the swordbearer and adds a hell of alot easier. I watched one video of a guy doing with a titan and hunger of Crota. He took the sword and dropped a bubble near the right boomers knights on the walkway with blessing of light. Then he popped one shot of hunger of crota threw the magnetic grenade and landed a seconds hunger shot. Crota goes down. The guy swords him three times and runs away. That seems easy enough.
So I get going. I fail at the abyss a few times. I end updoing the jump at the first lamp and stealthing the rest of it. The bridge part and thrallway I get first try. Deathsinger takes me about an hour and a half. One of my friends was in my stream cheering me on for this part.
Finally I'm at Crota. I found out the best way to take the early guys out is to rocket them nonstop and railgun the sword knights with my icebreaker. Takes me a few runs to get this part down without taking much damage, but there isn't much to worry about there. I spend alot of this time trying to get a feel for the range of the boomer knights and Crota's ranged attack. I noticed that my main struggle was consistently killing the swordbearer. It appeared as if his AI is slightly random on if he will run away from you or chase you. I tried getting the bubble placement down. At first I went too close and Crota immediately punished me. I started getting it in a good location but I ended up attracting too much boomer fire even with the bubble. Finally I got some semblance of a pattern going. I used rocket-grenade-rocket just like the video...and he went down....sometimes. This really disturbed and frustrated me. Sometimes Crota would not go down.. What? I correctly attributed this to the fact hunger uses cluster bombs and sometimes the bombs would not hit Crota. Sometimes he would move and they would fall to his left or right even if the main projectile hit. I was discouraged by this notion as every time it failed I would have to wipe. Eventually I got my Crota downs to just above 50% with about 3 hours of practice. I started looking to improve my post 1st down and Ogre stages. After the first down I realized that I would have to get my super very quickly. I figured out I could just barely snipe one boomer from each tower without a swordknight spawning. These knights provided me with more super energy than the nearby thralls. I commited that to memory. Next I figured out a "thrall barrier" The steps leading up to the area from the previous area (where the gatekeeper is on hard mode) cannot be passed by thralls...but it can be passed by the swordbearer. If I can consistently aggro the swordbearer I can face him and him alone. Neat. I also used this barrier to call thralls out of hiding so I could gain super energy. This spot was also protected from boomer fire and Crota on all sides. I just had to work on consistency.
Next I had to figure out ogres. I figured I would try the strat we as a group use....staying in the rightmost ogre room. It struck me as slightly faster than waiting for the ogres in the long hallway. I ended up settling on icebreakering the first ogre four times in the face which would stagger it. Then I threw a grenade to stun him followed by two rockets and a quick swap to an icebreaker. By this time the other ogre was near the center and I lobbed rockets over the barrier.
I also figured out that using my infinite rockets I would use the period of time after the first down to spawn as many heavy ammo packets as possible. I decided to quick swap to an MG Harms Way in my inventory since it has the surplus ammo perk (just like corrective measure). For those who don't know... as long as you spawn the ammo pack with that gun equiped...whenever you pick that ammo pack up (even if isn't equiped) you will pick up "more." So when I was done spawning packs I switched back to the hunger and picked up a pack...which would immediately give me full heavy ammo from 0. From here I could use ammo liberally as long as I avoided picking up unneccesary packs. Cool.
About 5 hours in I finally get Crota on his last leg. One more sword should do it. I calm myself down. Enrage is near. Boom got him down....What?!?! he gets up??? One hit from death. I got so mad. After a bit of seething I did some self analysis. What can I be doing better here. I realized that I had been gettinglucky with the hunger of Crota since I was still missing roughly 40% of my downs. Getting 4 perfect swords meant nothing if #1 my run was slow and #2 each sword had a 40% chance to miss. That isn't a goal I want to acheive if it is based on luck. I decided to try something else.
I decided to try using a warlock. Except I couldn't get through the abyss of some reason. My normal circle lamp strats weren't working. I attributed this to frustration and lack of calm.
I decided to try using switching to the the truth and a shotgun for crota down. That didn't work since the truth wasn't doing enough damage and I couldn't damage him consistently. I tried a configuration with the icebreaker, but that wasn't putting out enough damage. I tried to aim high with the hunger of crota to intentionally miss my cluster bombs and to the combo hunger-grenade-hunger-icebreaker. I put quickswap perk on both my hunger and the icebreaker for this. That plan didn't work because sometiems Crota went down early (from the second hunger shot) and I would miss my sword since I was still firing the icebreaker. Sometimes I killed ogres slowly and I would have to fight Crota on the right sidewith a bubble between him and Crota. That failed me a few times and Ogres kept coming for a second time early. Nothing else seems to work until...
I pulled out my MG Harms Way that I had been using to generate better packs. I had been using this beast of a gun on my hunter. I ended up getting pretty perfect rolls for it...crouch accuracy + surplus + void. This this is way better than the corrective measure for anything other than oracle killing. It also has that satisfying chugga chugga sound that makes me think of the CoD M60. I decide to try it out on the invisible hunter cloak rock on the right side of Crota. Lo and behold...it takes down his shield. It takes tons of bullets and time but yeah...it definitely downs him. The problem with this plan I quickly found was that I couldn't get to Crota in time to get three hits in. I tried a mix of this strategy with the bubble strategy but that didn't work as I needed sustained fire and the boomers were just continuously lighting me up. Painful.
I took a break and did some research. I found a guy who did Crota with no exotics supers or grenades. In that video he did Crota with a corrective measure by...jump strafing right next to Crota. After marveling at how this guy was not eating a Crota sword sandwich I tried it myself. After eating a Crota sword sandwich I determed I was not doing it right. I played back a bit bu the boomers were trouble and Crota was landing shots. Even though I downed Crota a few times I was so low in health I never had any buffer health against the boomers for when I was swording Crota. More discouragment.
After a break I went back and tried for a few more hours with the hunger of Crota strategies. Everything seemed easy to me at this point except consistently downing Crota and getting swordbearer kills. I rewatched the video in which the guy did it with the corrective measure. He stood and jump strafed on the second platform from the swordbearer spawn and shot him as came out to draw aggro and dodge Crota fire. Neat. I incorperated that into my strategy.
I got Crota to 1 hit two more times after that. On both instances he did a quickrise and I died. I got frustrated and realized I really needed sleep. I had already ignored invite from Mal for titanfall (hi Mal <3) and kicked winecracker (BEACUSE GOSH DARN IT MY STREAM TITLE SAYS SOLOING CROTA GOSH). I get an invite from Ice who wanted to talk about borderlands 2. He asks me like he does every week if I want to help him with nightfalls in a jokey way. I get an idea. I say yes..I'll help him with one, but in exchange you have to help me through Crota on my warlock. We end up doing the first half of Crota HM for him and he gets the chestpiece he needed. He says screw nightfalls. We get Crota done up to deathsingers.
I try soloing Crota a few more times. Fail. I go to bed.
This morning I wake up feeling like I didn't get any sleep. Great. Coffee. Eggs. Bacey. After-Coffee-Tea. Sweet. Didn't feel like playing. I watch some TV. Arrow, Flash, The Slap. Good stuff. Now I'm ready. I do a trial run on my warlock. I have pisspoor intellect. so I decided to try bad juju. That works but the first area is a bit slow since no icebreaker. Also the boomers and swordbearer were going to be more of a problem. After trying a few real runs I found my initial accessment to be correct.
Luckily I found in my inventory a high intellect roll on some boots and a headpiece and heart of praxic fire that were almost leveled up. My plan from this point was to do my dalies to finish leveling up all three pieces. The bounties were easy all all piece got maxxed. Nice.
My plan for the raid was to no deviate from the videos I saw while incorperating the things I had learned from the inbetweens. I still wanted to use the same ogre strat. I figured fatebringer is a great thrall/acolyte slayer. Icebreaker is goo for the knights and ogres and my hunger of Crota will wreck the ogres and panic button the swordbearer. For Crota himself I use a combination of Fusion Grenade, Radiant Skin (for survival), and viking funeral in order to down Crota with grenades from the super and burn damage to keep his shields down. I would do this from the hunter crouch cloak position on the right of Crota.
Upon practice I learned that four direct impact grenades would down him on exactly the fourth's impact. The videos showed a guy throwing a grenade while gliding toward crota with the sword in hand. This move proved very difficult to master as it required remember to get your grenade back AND aiming the grenade in third person. If you didn't get your grenade back before you pick up the sword...when you pick up the sword your super ends...and thus you won't get the grenade back. Missing any one of the grenades except the first or second usually spelt disaster. However this tactic proved super effective as I was able to down Crota right AT Crota. I got three slams in very consistently with much room to get out.
At this point I figured I could get an extra swipe in. So... Rb->RT->RT->RT. So that ended up being what I did. The lack of infinite rockets made the Ogres slightly harder. I ended up failing quite of a bit of the grenades since sometimes Crota would strafe really fast and the grenade would sail right by. Sometimes I would throw low and the grenade would go between his legs. Sometimes it would hit the sword I dropped. Sometimes the sword would somehow fall from its position on the rock I was kneeling on. Stupid little things.
Then beav arrived to cheer me on in twitch chat. I showed him my strat. I showed him my dumb titan plan. I went back to warlock and gave it a few more attempts. Finally though. Finally. I got it. I got the perfect run. Swordbearer was behaved and accepted aggro. I messed up a grenade throw but recovered. Ogres went down smootly. Swordbearer spawned fast after ogres and went down superfast. I kept my cool Crota went down with 2 slams to spare. Oh man. I got them Cod Nuke/SnD clutch chills all over again. If I was feeling better I think I would have jumped from my hard uncomfortable wooden chair. Beav was happy. I was glad there was someone else watching. Made it better somehow.
I got dem goosebump doh. Uploaded it to the youtubes for you guys. Bought myself Borderlands 2 Handsome Collection as a reward. Hope you enjoyed the long arduous journey I had.
