For 2014 I would recommend:
The Lego Movie had no right to be a good movie, but it was a good movie anyways. Edge of Tomorrow was a pretty good action film; unfortunately Bill Murray wasn't starring in it trying to learn piano and ice sculpting to impress a girl as the day repeats itself. :b The Imitation Game is a great film if you like Benedict Cumberbatch and have no idea what the Enigma code was during WWII; otherwise the ending's already spoiled. Guardians of the Galaxy was the only Marvel-related film that I really liked, then again I haven't seen X-Men: Days of Future Past. Big Hero 6, and Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Pt. 1) were pretty good, but were obviously setting the stage for something better in the next film. I'd probably wait for a sequel to pop up before binge-watching either of these, but watching them now certainly won't hurt.

Yeah, if you haven't seen Mad Max: Fury Road yet, you're really missing out. Either that or you're a nutless monkey. Not only is it awesomely insane and an amazing piece of filmmaking, but it's rated 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. It's a must see.

I'll see it later but I don't trust review sites though. I'll make my own opinion rather than having someone else tell me it's good.
"10/10 Could be better"-IGN
"Stanley Kubrick is terrible" - Every reviewer who reviewed The Shining/2001

"10/10 Could be better"-IGN "Stanley Kubrick is terrible" - Every reviewer who reviewed The Shining/2001 Rotten Tomatoes isn't a review site. It aggregates professional reviews across the country and comes up with a score based on those reviews. I'm a film nut (it's my true passion, really), and this movie is a must see.

Still, if Rotten Tomatoes had been around when The Shining or Blade Runner 1st came out both of those movies scores would be below 50% on release week.
Not knocking on Furry Road by any means. I loved the original Mad Max, Road Warrior was cool, and Beyond Thunderdome isn't as bad people make it out to be.
I do plan on seeing Furry Road, I just don't believe in any online rating.

Well the thing with Rotten Tomatoes, a 60% doesn't mean it's bad as many other places it would be. It also has separate user reviews, so even if a film is superb in critics eyes, but the average viewer doesn't like it you can compare the two. I mean Man of Steel is a perfect example in the reverse. 56% by critics, 76% by users.
I'm not saying Rotten Tomatoes is a perfect website. But it's not horrible either.
Also The Shining has 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Also The Shining has 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Read this again: Still, if Rotten Tomatoes had been around when The Shining or Blade Runner 1st came out both of those movies scores would be below 50% on release week. The Shining was almost universally hated by critics on release week, even Stephen King condemned the movie. Blade Runner was a flop and disliked by critics upon release. Both of those movies have stellar scores at the moment on RT however they would not of if Rotten Tomatoes existed in the early 1980's as they both had initial negative responses.

So we're all agreed that online ratings mean nothing? Good.
I'm not going to see a movie because of an online score and I'm not going to not see a movie because of an online score. Same goes for all things subjective like music and whatnot.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM I think they're useful for abstracting how we would subjectively rate it if we saw the thing. Especially if it's a good review that goes over story elements and plot devices--but, if you mean strictly numbers ratings alone, then I suppose I have to agree.

So we're all agreed that online ratings mean nothing? No. The analysis of aggregated information is a tremendously useful tool. Your "too cool for school" view of what Rotten Tomatoes does doesn't change that. Is it the end all, be all? No. But to outright dismiss it is short-sited and foolish.

My point against that would be the people who like "bad movies". There a plenty of people who enjoy seeking out low budget B-moive flicks. I mean I love Batman and Robin just because it's fun to make fun of and laugh at with friends. Are they all short sited and foolish? Different strokes for different folks buddy. "The analysis of aggregated information is a tremendously useful tool. " Not for art, for other things yes. As opinions =/= information Edit:Before this internet fight escalates too much, all I'm trying to say film being art is completely subjective. I know I'm not going to convince to not using Rotten Tomatoes. I'm trying to convey the reasons why I don't consider a RT score to be a factor when viewing a movie.

Opinions certainly are information, and you liking bad movies doesn't invalidate critical analysis.
I can't tell if you're being done sort of b-movie hipster here, or you're just butthurt Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 was universally shite upon. Either way, your opinion doesn't invalidate what Rotten Tomatoes strives to achieve.
Moving on, Fury Road is not to be missed on the big screen. And that's all I've got to say about that.

Cut out that passive aggressive ad hominem, it's getting distracting. Edito: Reminder that there is nothing to be gained in an internet fight. No more insults m8.

Well of course The Shining had mixed reviews and of course Stephen King hated it. It butchered the book, there are plenty of people who still think that, and it deserves that animosity. Of course after people viewed it as an interpretation and not a faithful adaptation opinions changed. And because Rotten Tomatoes shows the actual reviews, not just numbers, you can read WHY they think the way they do. Aggregate scores, especially when there is weighted scores and more rigorous methods to judge reviews and actually has a wide scale of ratings. I.e. 60% most places would be bad, it isn't at Rotten Tomatoes. It is a useful tool. And the argument that "well some people like B Movies" is bad too. Because sure, some people like bad movies...but that doesn't make the objectiveness of bad quality, shoddy camera work, flat acting etc... Any less true

I mean I can totally get behind using RT as tool to view what other people think and contrast it what you think as well as learn how other people interpret movies. However a statement like "Go see X movie it has Y score on the internet" doesn't hold much weight to me. Also I wouldn't call "bad movies" objectively bad, they're bad on a technical aspect rather than an objective/subjective one. As someone who enjoys cheesy movies may view a boom mic in the shot as hilarious and a positive, I mean just look at Tim Burton's Ed Wood.
