It's a ballache. I've got 3 of 10 and 35% elemental kills. What comes next looks worse. Still - at least the crucible kills are done

After killing 50 guardians across 2 characters, I set out to do the material and ability kill part because the night is still young, relatively speaking. 2 hours and 7 rare materials later, had to quit because I cant keep my eyes open
Easily the most boring thing I have done in Y2. Congratulations, Bungie, you managed to repeat the same nightmare design mistake you made in Y1. Make players grind through boring activities is NOT the way to make something challenging...

Does anyone know if the exotic sword is ALWAYS 310? I'm still dicking about at 297 (not raided.) I can't seem to get any higher. If I get this, and it decodes/arrives at 290, I shall throw my toys, well and truly, out of the metaphorical pram.

I did it... Never going back to the moon ever.
Polo's biggest advice: do the ability kills first. Or prioritize them over mat looting. In my experience, Ability kills are more important than looting.
I conducted an experiment:
Looted 150 heliums without doing an ability kill (well, I did but not solar)... No solarim (or whatever they're called) flakes
Killed 25% worth of ability kills (from 45 to 70) then looted 12 heliums... 3 solarium flakes.
Despite what other youtubers have said, for me... You get a rare mat per 10% of your ability kills
Other advice: make sure you choose the option of having enemies explode from ability kills, group you enemies up so you get multikills,
And most importantly: Do the Sword drinking game by having a swig of beer/lager/ale/whisky for every 10% ability kills you pass and every mat you get

Why? 3 words: "Siege of Warmind" - the magical place on earth that takes care of all your needs for general kill farming (for specific types of enemies that are not thralls, you'll have to do it somewhere else). I would recommend the following: 1) focus on mat farming as top priority; 2) do the ability kill only when convenient; 3) once you get the 10 rare materials and still need some more ability kills: do them all at the hallway when seemingly endless stream of thralls are coming at you for your shooting enjoyment; Bring a Bad Juju if you can. I do not mind the ability kills, but I hate the mat farming with passion. Whoever came up with that idea at Bungie should be sent to clean toilets for a week, to teach him a lesson on what boring grinding can do to people...

Oh boy, I look forward to doing that ...whenever I finally manage to get those 25 sword kills in PvP. For sword kills (as well as TLW), one idea suggested but I haven't tried extensively is to play Classic game modes, where players with only Y1 gears still exist, and theoretically "easier to pwn on". Regardless which playlist you would like to use for this, my recommendations are the same, camp (the heavy) and bait (around corner using red dot): 1) Know where and when the heavy will drop; 2) Save your super for heavy fight; 3) Do whatever you can to acquire the heavy; 4) Corner bait with resolve and lunge immediately once the enemy turns the corner; 5) Once you get the heavy, STAY ALIVE as long as possible. One pack of heavy can net you lots of kills as long as you are careful; BTW, I tried the idea of rushing with guard to block bullets, did not work out too well for me. There are also brave souls who try to kill people without the heavy ammo (basically just regular melee with the handle), I did not even try. If you want to give that a spin, try shoot a few bullets first then switch to sword. Also, stick to whichever playlist ((Rumble seems to be a great choice because it's easier to have players rushing you, but you'll have to fight hard for heavy, that's where saving the supers will pay off) you pick for multiple games despite the early setbacks. If you do that, the game does seem to get progressively "better" in matching you with easier opponents.

I heard about using the Y1 playlist on Reddit a little while back, seems like it could be a good idea to run in there...or regular game mode while Banner/ToO is going on this week. Otherwise, I'm happy that the Sword quest isn't affected by deaths, and that it could eventually get completed over time if I don't try the Y1 playlist route. Yeah, rushing with just the empty hilt seems like a good way to get a shotgun blast to the face. Good call on staying in the same playlist even if you're struggling.

Year 1 players will be easier to beat, all things equal, because of the nerfed cooldowns on their armour. That's why I find discussions of weapon balance on Reddit etc a bit tedious.

I am not going to bother with the exotic swords. Bungie clearly didn't want to make it easy to get them, as they have a hell of a quest and drop at 310. I don't really miss them either. I am just going to pick up stuff along the way, and I am sure I will have it in another month or two. Maybe do some grinding for just the last few materials.

If you are ever short on Weapon Parts (like I am right now because I made a stupid mistake deleting my entire stock of 240 while trying to just burn motes to upgrade gears ), the most cost effective way is probably this: 1) Buy Thunderlord or Truth with 2500 glimmer from Blueprint; 2) equip a class item that gives you MG or RL upgrade buff; 3) "Mote" the weapon up; 4) Dismantle; This will give you 5 or 6 parts per iteration, and cost you 2500 glimmer and ~6 motes. Why heavy? Because they upgrade much faster (cost less motes) than Primary and Special.

Ouch, I feel for you...
I still don't have a thunderlord or truth though... But I think ToO weapons from vance will probably be an even better source of weapon parts (at least it was last year)

But I think ToO weapons from vance will probably be an even better source of weapon parts (at least it was last year) I need to play ToO to earn them, right? The Exotic Heavy weapon way is pretty good. I built my stock back up to 40 fairly easily, and I have a ton of glimmer in reserve. Also, I am not sure it is a glitch or not, but I was able to buy 5 armsday weapons per character last week instead of 3. Even if I keep 1 each, I still have 10 that I can dismantle, giving me 30 marks and 30 weapon parts.
