First up, this week's Nightfall: Shield Brothers with: Epic / Brawler / Chaff / Match Game / Exposure It sounds tough, have to match damage to shields and no burns, but in practice it is actually not bad. Elemental Damage to worry about in the final fight is Solar, with a solid weapon for that purpose, control adds well enough, and revive the dead effectively, the NF feels easier than the previous two weeks. I did get my very fist post-TTK exotic drop from NF, but I made a big mistake: I had my character at 299 light instead of >=300. So as a result, the exotic is 290 instead of 310. DO NOT repeat my mistake.

This week's featured Crucible playlist: Mayhem Ramble.
Did not get to play the Mayhem Clash until 2 hours before reset, but really enjoyed it. I have a feeling that I will enjoy the Mayhem Ramble even more, this is the week to finally get myself "renowned" at TLW, maybe even finally complete the "swording the guardians" gate to Chaperone, arguably the most fun PvP shotty in the game.
Supers great in Mayhem: Hammer / Golden Gun with the extra shot helm / Electrocution.

Looks like I won't be doing the Weekly Crucible event. Pity, I could do with the Marks. I'm assuming I won't get any Legendary Marks unless I win, rather being in the top three like Black Ops 2.

Nope, simple participation, even AFK, can net you 10 marks from each of the first 3 games played. Start your game, join the lobby, robber band your controller to run in circles and shoot bullets, then go do whatever you need to do. Come back 30 minutes later and enjoy your 30 marks. PvP daily & weekly = easiest marks. Sometimes, players even intentionally tank their performance so they can get to mercy rule and end game quicker (say form a cannon fodder fireteam and throw themselves into enemy fire), and therefore increase "productivity" of per minute played. Conspiracy theorists could even go so far as saying that Bungie intended for this to happen, to create an illusion that Crucible is fun to play (for the players who actually give a gosh darn golly gee whiz about their W/L, K/D etc), and hide their lack of efforts of improving the experience itself (60FPS, dedicated servers, SBMM, and even a ranking system, essential ingredients that a modern MP FPS environment should provide).

Crucible weeklies only give (gave?) marks for a win! So unless your advice is especially for this weeks rumble, I am afraid you need 3 first places... Sounds like good practice for trials though The daily gives marks just for participation.

qupie is right on that one, Witty. You can AFK the daily PvP, but you have to be on the winning team to get anything for the weekly. Luckily a top 3 finish counts as a win in rumble now, at least for marks/quest/bounty purposes, so that's not too difficult. Sadly you still have to actually win for it to count towards your grimoire score.

I thought that I was on the losing teams for last week's Mayhem Clash and still got the marks, must mis memorized.

Arms Day recommendations from Planet Destiny: planetdestiny.com/armsday-weapon-recommendations/Also, this week's field tests are the easiest. Other than SniperR Fallen captain kills, the rest can all be done on Dreadnaught with little effort. One of the best spots for Fallen captain kills (credit goes to malgato): the entrance to Warmind. There is a cave there that spawns a captain (along with dregs and vandals) every a few seconds.

Mothyards also has 3 of them that you can make a little loop with. One up outside the halls that take you to the Skywatch, another in the cave below, and a third in the "hole in the wall" cave by the airplane wing.

Xur: Recommendations: 1) buy gauntlet engrams and only decode them if you are >= 300 light. The higher your light is, the better odds you have on getting 310; 2) buy Three Of Coins; DO NOT get trolled by Xur and buy the 290 light exotic armor pieces. Last week I got all 3 of my characters' helm to 310, plan to do the same on gauntlet this week.

thanks for the recommendations, Scorp! You should do this every Friday Xur has made the recommendation very simple: 1) If exotic armor engrams are on sale: stock them up until you have enough to get all of your characters a 310 piece for that armor slot; 2) always keep a healthy level of Three Of Coins in stock. The exact quantity is decided by how many ultras (story mission bosses, strike mission bosses, Raid bosses, and Taken champions) you think you'll kill for the next week; 3) DO NOT buy armor offerings at 290 light, unless you earn more coins than you can spend, or a piece that you really want to use immediately; 4) If exotic weapon is on sale: only buy it if you want to use it immediately;

Did 2 more NF runs last night (trash drops BTW), more tips:
1) Weapon recommendations Bring solar weapons (and use a solar subclass if possible) to the final fight, because the biggest PITA (pain-in-the-arse, or pain-in-the-ass, but I feel like British today ) of the strike is not the brothers, but the solar shielded Centurions; Special: preferably a shotty (the raid one is superb), FusionR is acceptable, no SniperR. Heavy: rocket launcher or sword.
2) Adds control: always clear adds as soon as they spawn. Super/rocket/sword them as soon as they get out of the door when they are still lumped together;
3) Tips against ground pound brother: a) Non-cheesy way that I personally found effective: when he is dashing towards you (when his on the downward arc of the trajectory), jump up and over his head, turn around, and pop lead into his arse with your shotty; b) cheesy way (credit to Dumien): get close facing him and crouch, he can't do any damage to you and will just sit there. Pump shotty shots into him at leisurely pace while your teammates take out adds (this only works when his brother is not present) without having to worry about the boss at all;
4) Tip against the artillery brother: get close and personal and shotty him;
5) Tips when both brothers are present: give artillery brother the first priority. Get into his dome of protection (which turns out to be the safest spot in the whole arena) and go to town with your shotty. After taking him out, remove all the adds and then kill the second brother; Don't forget to use 1 ThreeOfCoins during this fight. Use 2 may not be a good idea, because the 2nd kill is too close to the 1st to be effective (may still stack towards your next ToC though, jury is still out on that).

b) cheesy way (credit to Dumien): get close facing him and crouch, he can't do any damage to you and will just sit there. I expected this to work because it's the cheese to the anti-cheese Minotaur that spawns in The Nexus strike.

Thanks for the invite. I haven't even done a Raid yet and my light level isn't fantastic so I don't want to be a liability. Once I get up and running, I'll surely be up for it. Thanks again

Thanks again To start raiding, you just need to: 1) got to 290+ light; 2) obtain a decent ScountR and a decent SniperR. Once you are ready, join our conversations in that thread and we will get you in.

ok thanks for the tips! I didn't know a decent ScoutR was needed, but I knew about how important a good Sniper is. I've been using pulse rifles mostly but I'll keep my eye out for a good ScoutR.
tx!

PulseR is acceptable, but ScoutR is better. If you have a decent one, we should be able to get you through the raid. ScoutR recommendations: 1) Boolean Gemini exotic (don't worry about it though if you are far away from Queen's Wrath rank 3 of Petra at the Reef); 2) Hung Jury sold at Dead Orbit (you'll need DO rank 3 and 150 marks); 3) ScoutR sold by Gunsmith, this is probably the easiest to obtain;

cool, thanks for the recommedations. I've been concentrating on Pulse rifles for now since I'm mostly planning on ending up in PvP eventually. But you're right that I will need to optimize gear for raids eventually. 1) I don't even know what any of that is 2) I recently joined Dead Orbit but I think I'm still rank zero 3) cool! I should look into this then. Which one is the one to get? Or is there just the one sold by him? Gunsmith is the weapons guy downstairs in the Tower?

You are much more in the dark that I thought Start with this thread: denkirson.proboards.com/thread/7947/smartis-guide-2nd-character-progression (It is intended for bros who have made good progress on primary character and are about to start alternatives, but should be OKish for primary character for now, until I can get the "questing" guide done). Check out the Gunsmith section. Unfortunately, Gunsmith sucks this week and only sells AutoR (3 of them! is he crazy?!). So this happens to be the worst week for you to get a ScoutR . Well, you can always hope for a random drop, or a decode from engrams. Keep in mind that Blue weapons are totally acceptable as long as they have decent attack numbers.

Got trolled hard today by Xur: 5 gauntlet engrams, all end up as 290, despite that I was decoding them at light=306.
Last weeek I was getting at least 1 310 out of every 3 engrams, Did they remove the 310 drop?
Just decoded a exotic special engram I got ToC, yielded 290 as well. That's 6 in a roll that are not 310. If any bros here have got 310 decode, please let me know. Meanwhile I am gonna hold off on decoding.

Do we know if odds incrementally increase with light level? I'm currently at exactly 300. Should I save my engrams for when my light level is higher?

That's what I was led to believe but I am not so sure any more, considering I was at 300-302 range last week and had pretty good odds, and I am at 306 this week and having bad odds.

While Mayhem Rumble is very difficult to win and therefore has the hardest 10 marks to earn, it is a good farming ground for sword kills. Heavy ammo drops upon deaths instead of disappearing, so you can ambush the heavy ammo rushers and hopefully be the one last man standing to pick it up, then corner bait the enemies into the wraith of your blade.
Also, once you start playing, try to make it an extended session of multiple games, to give SBMM a chance to match you against "less competent" players. My play history as reference:
Game #1: 6th Game #2: 5th Game #3 & #4: placed 2nd and 3rd with the front runner leading with huge margin impossible for me to catch up; (if I were to use Rockets, I might have a chance) Game #5: my time to shine, against 5 n00bs, including one idiot using a non-blinding Defender(!) . Every time he saw me, he will put up a bubble, and I'll 1) if I have sword ammo: rush into his bubble and cut him into pieces, or 2) golden gun the bubble twice to blow it away and then nail him with the 3rd shot. Win the game easily plus 7-8 sword kills (4 coming from the bubble guy); Game #6: place 2nd, 1 sword kill; Game #7: another easy lobby, completed my sword grinding and another easy win to get 10 more marks.
Switch to Warlock, rinse and repeat on Solar sword (I was an idiot and started the sword reforged quest on my second character instead of primary character, so I had to do it again. Did put Void sword on my primary though).
Sword in Crucible is a real deal, competitive with MG and RL.
On a separate note, the power triangle of Mayhem:
Golden Gun / Stormtrance / Hammer
Golen Gun beats both, but you can only have 3-4 shots; Stormtrance with teleport can usually beats Hammer; Hammer has the highest kill / activation average.

I got the strike only scout rifle from the Shield Brothers when helping my bro in law finish up his Jolly Holliday quest.
It's quite quite fun... Even at 285 it wrecks. It would be a VoC if it had solar damage and full auto. It's better than the Does Not Bow AR from the Skolas strike
