I have been painfully aware of how bad my aim is since the first day of playing FPS. To see how bad I am, look no further than my headshot % on HaloTracker, which is at a pathetic 2.6%. However, I have never specifically worked on improving it, hoping I would just improve over time. It took me 7 Halo (not counting ODST) to realize that assumption is false in a very big way
Over the last a couple of days, I decided that I should make an effort to practice aiming. It will not only improve my performance, but much more importantly will enhance the fun I am getting from playing FPS. The reason why I love Halo so much, despite that the majority of my XBL friends don't play this game, is because I get high for nailing those headshots. I need to make that happen a lot more often
The question now is how. The purpose of this thread is to share a few methods I tried, and more importantly solicit ideas that are more effective.
Idea #1: practice in campaign
Currently I am using the following setup:
1) Difficulty = Legendary
2) Mission = Unconfirmed, the reason why I choose this mission is because a) there is a section where the player's fireteam need to deal with waves of crawlers backed by soldiers in an open field with low covers, and b) there are quite a few sniper riles throughout the level;
Idea #2: shoot moving objects in a custom game
Thanks to forge, maps specifically for aim practice are being made, like this one:
Without aim assist, these objects are surprisingly hard to hit. At the beginning, I tried to "think" where to aim. After a while, I realized that is the wrong thing to do, just like thinking how to perform the stroke in tennis. Let the conscious rest and the subconscious take over is actually much more effective.
Idea #3: play SWA
I have not actually done this, but plan to. Without the concerns of automatic weapons and power weapons power ups, it is a purer training ground for aiming;
Idea #4: play FFA
I have been mostly playing Team Slayer, but at the level of "Gold" where I am, the games are often dominated by Automatic Weapons. FFA of 6 players offer more space for engagements where precision weapons are much more preferable. Not to mention that a) the encounter rate is higher, and b) positioning, power weapons, and power ups are less important and therefore a better playing field for aiming practice.
Idea #5: different mindset when playing Team Slayer: care much less about kills and winning, and much more about hitting the shots
With such mindset change, I am able to use a lot less of the automatic weapons and focus more on using precision weapons. A good side effect is that I am now more attentive about my positioning on the map. I also start to use grenades and thrusting more purposefully.
Bros, what are you thoughts on this subject?
