The former -- you'll need to level up those weapons as with any other for it.
That reminds me, when the first three weapons released, one could already apply Dark Matter if they unlocked it, but the other camos on said melee weapons remained locked. Treyarch later changed this to mandate the completion of regular camo challenges in order to apply Dark Matter, what with them saying it'd be earned proper.
So unless you've made a Dark Matter variant before the patch, you're SOL.

I really enjoy the new maps. I don't enjoy the RNG of weapons. Skins/camos/outfits, sure. But damn, I want to use the new guns and can't. It sucks.

The crappy part is also that there is no way they will just give it to us later or include it in a DLC as a "surprise" bonus or whatever near the end of this game's lifespan, since that would piss off the whales who they want to keep happy.
I think someone on reddit said they spent $2000. This is why we can't have nice things.

As someone who has studied the F2P gaming industry, spending $2k in microtransactions is not unheard of. Every big game (CSGO, MOBAs, Clash, etc) has plenty of non-YouTubers/streamers who hit $1k+ in spending. Edit - and this is why this model is inevitable for console games. It's more profitable than selling weapon packs for a few bucks each.

Was CS:GO ever a full priced game, though? This just smacks of gouging. It's basically the same if Bungie had started selling strange coins for real money in Destiny... Just because it's RNG loot doesn't make it not pay to win, it's just now it's pay random amount of $ to win or pay to maybe win, maybe not... meh.
I don't really know how CS:GO does it. Team Fortress 2 definitely has a whole thing where you can purchase stuff that can help you in game, but there's actually a player economy built into that and most of the stuff is sidegrades rather than strait upgrades, except for a few particularly useful items or synergies. On the other hand TF2 has actually gone F2P... so...

The Valve games can't be compared to this. Those are cheap games that are damn near mainly based on the contributions and involvement in the community and the games are years old. Versus CoD, a full AAA $60 title with almost zero content from the community and each game only lasts a year.

So the dual wielded shadowclaw has killed me enough times now that I am becoming more and more bitter that I can't have one.
Where is the all powerful nerf hammer? Dual wielded, that thing is pretty nasty. That would be fitting if they don't nerf the paid for bullsht though wouldn't it? /tinfoil hat

No point in the even being added if they aren't good in some capacity. What they should do is make an epic box for 50 keys or something. Or make that asian bitch running the shop just take 300-500 or something and give you a weapon directly, under the table like. That's like 150-250 matches.

Are they available in common boxes and have they upped the rare enough to warrant only buying rares?

Are they available in common boxes and have they upped the rare enough to warrant only buying rares? Yes, you can get them in commons. And yes, they upped the percentages a while ago for the rares. Although, I'd probably be opening commons only if it wasn't for the cryptokey bonus you get in the rares. Down the line, rares are the way to go regardless because of the guaranteed rares, which will come back when you burn duplicates.

Still don't understand why there wasn't a system implemented that allowed you to trade CryptoKeys for specific Camos.
Common = 10
Rare = 25
Legendary = 50
Epic = 100
Or whatever arbitrary numbers you assign
Sick of picking up the same common ones every bloody time.
On the bright side, have every camo for Snipers/LMGs yet Ive never bothered creating a class for any of the aforementioned weapons.

I wonder if they even have the full set of taunts available? I have obtained a handful from the black market populating the first 3 or so empty taunts slots for the various specialists. I have never obtained any taunts below those first few slots for any other specialists. Nor have I seen more than a handful from other players.

Still don't understand why there wasn't a system implemented that allowed you to trade CryptoKeys for specific Camos. That's not how this business model works. If you couldn't buy crates with cash it would be a different story. The whole point is to make you literally gamble with real cash. There would be no gambling if everything just had a set price. Activision can get potentially unlimited money from you instead of a small, fixed amount, they have no reason to undersell.

I would love to know what percentage of players are willing to spend money on these random gambles. I can't imagine ever doing it, but there must be a significant group that sees it differently.

I think it's a minority, but the ones that do often overspend quite a bit, and there's no real cost to it so it's really just free money. Then it's all about tweaking drop rates to optimize the amount people spend before getting the loot they want and quitting.
I thought about buying some points just to buy some extra loadout slots, but now... naw... fuck 'em.

When they locked weapons (and the crossbow is not a joke weapon, it was the best shotgun in the game at release, don't know about now), I was done, especially when I didn't get a single weapon, good or not, from 800 keys. Activision has lost me as a customer for Call of Duty, and I haven't dropped any money on an Activision product for a while. 3arc burned that bridge of loyalty because Activision gave them terminal cancer and they went senile. Shame too, because I loved the game at release, but making the game p2w and patching out the skill mechanics has put me off of this IP for good.
