Smoke

I rarely use smoke, largely because when I do run it I seem to rarely find myself in situations where it is more of a nuisance to enemies than to myself and teammates. Yes it magically makes you not show up on radar when you fire, but then shooting from within smoke seems like a losing proposition. I've always found smoke to be far more obscuring when you're in it, than when you're on the outside looking in. Maybe I just haven't used it enough but honestly what are the do's and don'ts of smoke. (Aside form don't use smoke and do use something besides it... heh)
Granted, I probably still won't use it much, but it could be useful to help my shotgun only classes get to CQB areas more safely, so I'm tempted.

It's great in Domination and Safeguard. In Dom obviously with smoke you've got instant cover for a tough B cap. I will sometimes also run tactician and put down a trophy system for some real rambo solo B capping action.
In Safeguard you can hide yourself while moving the robot in a visible area. Yes everyone still knows roughly where you are but it's better than not having it, sometimes. For instance, smoke the path on redwood while the robot is moving up to jump into the bunker, or smoke the wide open lane in Hunted while the robot is walking down the path.
Also useful in Demo when defusing/planting.
Could also be used in SnD in any map where a sniper or someone long range can see the direction you or a group are going at the beginning; smoke the lane so the opponent is left guessing. I don't play SnD anymore so I don't know if this applies to any maps in BO3 though. It did in COD4.

Smoke is also really good in SnD if you are coordinating with a thermal sniper teamate on long sightlines.
Its other use I discuss briefly in my personal stat thread. Smoke earned a spot on my most used class with my most used weapon. Here is the class again: x2 Smoke + Flak Jacket + Scav + Awareness + Dead Silence + Brecci w/ RF + EX Mags
I call it a "rush breaker" since the goal is to smoke common rushing locations and spam brecci shots through the smoke. It is actually way better than it sounds. Also, if you have good ears you can use the smoke to reload or to soundwhore enemies at or around the smoke. You can use smoke to cover bomb rushes, defusers, major lines of sight. The list goes on. There are times where you might get chewed out by a teammate cuz you ruined plans, but I find it helps more than it hurts.

I see. So mostly it's an objective thing, though I can see it working for rushing rooms with a brecci. I mean so what if you're blind too if you can just spam and use awareness to help you find them. Could mebbe pair that with sixth sense as well, though for objectives flak has to be a no brainer for that kind of thing.
I rarely play objective modes, though. I should play them more, but usually just don't.

Sixth Sense does work, but a common tactic is to not shoot through my smoke, but throw X explosive into it lol. Flak jacket really helps there and you can usually catch them as they throw it. I've shown this vid before but it has relevance here.
Pay attention to the first round. Note that if they ran through the door smoke at any point they probably would have died. The smoke in this case effectively shut them out of supporting their teammates flanking me from tracks. I also throw an early smoke at around 9 seconds to cover argyle and he mops up an easy sniper kill at 16 seconds.

Tried smoke some more and I think I've concluded that it's garbage for TDM. Sometimes it could be useful, but it's actively harmful to both me and teammates at least as often. Maybe you could use it defensively, but most of the times when you need a defense you're already dead before you could activate it so I mostly focus on offense and avoiding needing defense. Problem is it doesn't really fill volumes so even when you smoke a room there's usually still a clear corner somewhere in there and your enemies will find those and wait for you, then they have the advantage. You could smoke a room then wait for your enemies to come through it, but mostly they'll just wait on the other side so it's more of a delay than anything. At worst it's completely disorienting to both you and teammates and get's everybody killed. I think I'm relegating smoke to objective modes only.

^Sounds pretty accurate. In TDM, it just doesn't last long enough considering there's no focal target on the map, maybe just some high traffic areas. But when you do throw it, does it actually help get kills as opposed to using the points on stuns/flashes (which can be used offensively or defensively). You'd have to be playing very methodically to use the smoke and keep re-supplying. And unless you actually coordinate with teammates, it can't be used to its full potential and will piss off others who don't want the obstruction.

Yeah in TDM I've found it generally counterproductive even in some of the best situations. For example, you're rushing up the hill on Stronghold so you smoke the open room that people snipe from to cover your entrance. Problem is they just back up into a corner or the other room and pop you when you're trying to get your bearings so going into the smoke is no bueno. At best it just delays their sniping. It could be useful as a distraction, but then if you'd just tossed a flash they'd probably all be blind and easy targets as you jump in.
I just can't find a way to really use it offensively. I tried smoking small spaces and going in with a Brecci, but it didn't work. I still couldn't locate the enemies to shoot them and they even killed me by just spraying the smoke with an SMG. Basically if you smoke an enemy all they have to do is backup a couple feet and then they have the advantage or at worst a delay. And if you do try to rush them from the smoke they can usually see you much better than you can them. I think you would have to get a LOT of practice at it and basically be able to go in and kill them blind, but then you're not really getting much of a benefit there, just making both of you blind.
I haven't tried it paired with some kind of thermal scope, but then aren't those all long range? If I could put a thermal on my shotgun maybe. (Along with stock so I could do more than crawl with it...)
What about BOA? Does BOA work through your own smoke? Ripper lockon? I'm guessing tracker footprints would be obscured?
Then again if you know the enemy will hunker down in a corner, maybe you can use that. Toss in the smoke then follow up with a semtex or grenade to the back of the room, or use it to take a moment to send an HKCD through the smoke if you've got one. I dunno. I may experiment some more, but I'm thinking for TDM I should skip it and stick to trophies and stuns/flashes.

You're more likely to die when using it anyways.

Smoke on objective games is great. On TDM not so much. I also think that a whole team of double smoke and C4 with scavenger and thermal sights would be an fun troll.
