As did I. I'm, uh, not sure how I'm feeling about my purchase. I'm killing the same asshole enemies I was killing 3 years ago.

Yeah but it's a good analog for life in general. At some point everything is old, nothing is exciting, and you're doing things out of routine and habit. And eventually you die.
You're welcome for the pep talk.

That's the case for a lot of games but then again I'm not sure Destiny 2 has added much different to its previous iteration compared to other sequels though. I would like to have seen more tetrapod enemies. There's no reason why the Vex can't have tetrapod species, for example.

So I played about 5 hours tonight and got to almost level 9, with a power level of 88 or something like that. I guess that was a decent start. Then I saw other people on my friends list at 160, 190, 240 and 270. The game just came out today didn't it?

I just equip my highest light/attack item each time I find something higher in case the progression system works like it did for Rise of Iron in Destiny 1. The raid is out soon-ish so people are grinding a lot from the get go in case they want to go for world's first or just go blind. You can't really raid much later than the release date if you want to go in blind because of inadvertent spoilers.

Secondly, sleep is for the weak and the raid is coming out in 6 days, so people are powerleveling like fuck to get to max pre-raid light. I fully expect TheHawkNY to be max light, with all non-raid exotics and legendaries by sunday

I stopped playing the old game cold turkey in the summer of 2015 (when I decided to snap my game disc in half), so my perspective might feel different than most people.
- The story does seem better. I'll give it a thumbs up on that, but to be fair, there was no story last time. So pretty much taking a Dr Seuss book and scribbling in the text would have been an improvement.
- The fresh start was nice. It was also nice to see my old characters face. At least I think it was my old character.
- The very little I have played, the couple of environments seem much better. So that's a positive. The first little city you start in, I thought that was pretty cool. Details. Elevation. You could run around and climb up on third story walls and stuff. This isn't a huge thing, but feeling like you could climb anywhere you wanted (even if you really can't), that little bit extra feeling of openness creates a bit of an illusion of making the world seem bigger.
- I was hoping some of the weirdness and leveling up stuff would come back to me. It sort of did. I remember the jist of things. But I'm still a bit confused with how best to level up. Coming from the standpoint of trying to juggle my time played. Deciding what's best between continuing the campaign assignments, doing the adventure things, and all the other side missions to play.
- Like before, there's little to no info on what I need to do. I know I need to level higher (I'm lv 8) and I need to get my power up (I'm like 88 or so)..and shooting crap raises both . . . . but other than that, I'm kind of lost. I see a bunch of vendors saying level 20 is important, why? The sniper tower guy says there is some engram at lv 185, why there? I guess i'll figure it out over time.
- I tried Crucible and I felt like I was getting hosed. I know nothing of the rule sets, like if higher level players have more power, but it sure felt like they did. I get matched up against a group that were all in the 200's plus a 300 power level, and I felt like my scout rifle was a pea shooter against them. I'm jumping around pot shotting these people over and over and over and doing absolutely nothing against them. Like 3 to 5 seconds of shooting. Then 'boom', two shots on me I am dead. WTF. Trash.
- Last thoughts. I'm not sure how the game could really improve or fix this issue, but the game quickly reminded me just how helter skelter it is. What I mean, the game at times can be either way to easy, or just ridiculously dumb hard. My first five hours I just waltzed through blowing up everything that moved. Very quickly, shooting stuff became an afterthought and just mindless running around trying to 'level up' for the sake of leveling up started to happen. I could feel that trap from before slowly starting to sink in. Logging hours and hours in a endless circle jerk of trying to just chase shit. I guess that is the purpose of the game, but ....maybe I was hoping for something different.

The game is always suggesting what mission to do. If it says "X level required," it specifically says to go do adventures or play crucible to help level up. It's right there on screen. Just do what it suggests and you'll be fine, no reason to worry about anything else yet.
Higher levels don't have more power in crucible. You ran into good players who've evidently no-lifed the game since launch and probably no-lifed the beta as well. You haven't played in 3 years. I got crushed if I went 3 weeks without playing crucible in the last game. This result is not surprising at all, but there'll also be plenty of noobs to balance things out. Keep at it.

Hey Heb! thanks
Question for you. If Xur is coming tomorrow (Friday), what do I need to do to make sure I can get an exotic from him? Last time with destiny 1, I screwed up the initial week or two, and missed the Exotic GHorn drop. Which would have crippling consequences for me the rest of the time I played the game. I don't want to make that mistake again (if there is a mistake to be made). Any tips on what I need to do, to load up on in terms of currency?

So pretty much taking a Dr Seuss book and scribbling in the text would have been an improvement. Completely agreed - The fresh start was nice. It was also nice to see my old characters face. At least I think it was my old character. It was a nice little treat - The very little I have played, the couple of environments seem much better. One of the deliberate things they chose to do was to not let you sparrow around like you could in the Cosmodrome. And the lack of loading times (like going from the Divide to the Rocketyard) between areas is also a very nice plus too - I was hoping some of the weirdness and leveling up stuff would come back to me. It sort of did. I remember the jist of things. But I'm still a bit confused with how best to level up. Coming from the standpoint of trying to juggle my time played. Deciding what's best between continuing the campaign assignments, doing the adventure things, and all the other side missions to play. The best way to level up, from my research is to play the game, constantly equiping more powerful items and complete the story line... so if you have a scout rifle that you love that's 65 power, but you get a hand cannon that's 80 power but you hate handcannons... suck it up and use the more powerful one. My Name is Byf has a nice video on what to do... I skipped to the text where you can see it rather than watching 12 minutes - Like before, there's little to no info on what I need to do. Play the campaign, finish the campaign, do patrols and events and get your level up to 20 and your power level up to 260+ - I tried Crucible and I felt like I was getting hosed. WTF. Trash. Yep... sounds like the crucible to me - Last thoughts. TBH.... and I am just speculating and going off my opinion and only my opinion... But they did that for 2 reasons 1) For game "feel" reasons because they want to simulate the chaos that happened when the Last City fell... the last mission I did last night, the one when you start the power on Titan, was that... I was potshotting and killing the Hive left right and centre... then I go down and there's a Hive Wizard that I have to blow all my ammo on... it was like this in the EDZ on earth too... that just around the corner there is something more powerful to kill you just when you think you've slaughtered easy dregs. Think of the suprise in the Cosmodrome when you zone in and go down the stairs as a level 1 and find those Hive boomer knights.... 2) remember that you feel this grind/time sink because you aren't leveled yet. Once you hit 20/280, it should lessen to some extent... remmeber that there are no more random rolls on gear or weapons anymore... so you won't have to grind strikes left right and centre to get a god roll with the perfect perks. Now, if they balance this by dropping the drop rate %ages is another story. But the gear grind should be lessened, imho

I'm really not sure on that. I'm guessing legendary shards are the material you'd need, but at this point I don't even know how to get them reliably. I'm guessing from faction rank up packages and from breaking down legendary gear, but I'm only level 14 and haven't gotten to any of that stuff yet. Honestly I wouldn't worry too much about it as I don't think there's much chance that another D1 Gjallarhorn situation is going to happen anyway. That was a huge mistake, no way they make it again.

@ marko This was explicitly taken out. Just having that item in the vault or on your character will effect the light of equipment that drops. So you can use those lower level guns and still get high drops. @ iw Just follow the game, it says everything you need to do. Don't be afraid of the huge grind there was in D1. That seems to be the reason you say that. Because to me your question seems to be "the game does not tell me the absolute optimal way to level up". It does tell you what to do, just not every little detail, that is for you to figure out. And every little detail was really important in the earlier stages of D1 to get a decent chance to level up without huge grinds, but that time seems to be long gone. Just enjoy the game Also, crucible certainly is not level dependent. But remember there are a lot of players out there who have 3 years of destiny experience, and especially the die hards (who are 200+ already) will probably have had a lot of practice.

Nevertheless, if you're using a gun that is lower power but you have higher level guns in your inventory, your drops will still be high, but your power level will still be low and you still won't do as much damage.... so you may as well just do it anyways to fight and kill at a higher power level So, while ultimately, no: you're not constantly equipping new gear to get better drops... but yes: you are still constantly equipping new gear to get more power and be better at killing and resisting

but 5-10 light barely changed anything on damage, so it is still better to use a weapon you can pwn with imho. Especially since 80% or so of the stuff you will be doing is under your power level.

The whole grind process doesn't seem to bad so far. I played a second session last night at got to level 14, a power level of 140's or so. So I'm getting there. Two sessions. Probably around 8 to 10 hours of playing. The game has this new feature on the left/tabs, which shows you what you can do. Additionally, there is also a countown timer and icon with public events. Wow, this is major new addition that helps get rid of wasting time waiting. I've done a lot of public events using this feature, which is so easy now. Also piggybacking off higher level events, jumping in with strangers. I'm not sure what exactly I'm leveling up by, but it seems to be a decent amount. Plus you get loot crates. Plus it's not boring like the campaign strikes.
Serious here, no joking. I was tired last night and fell asleep around 11:30 while running the Vex/Io moon campaign level. I kept dozing off and on while shooting shit. I don't think I died once though. I kind of 'woke up' while shooting the end boss.
I'm out till late Sunday night now though. Kayaking all weekend. No Xur today, so didnt' have to worry about that.
Question.
I noticed when signing in to use my Warlock . . . my other two older characters are there to sign in with. And they are already at power level 100. Does the game give like a free boost, start you out higher when doing a second character?

Does the game give like a free boost, start you out higher when doing a second character? You can either bring your other two characters along for the ride (essentially, not creating a new character and class) or you can delete them and start anew. To use me as an example, I ran 3 warlocks in D1... I can do the same in D2 and have them look the same as D1... or I can start anew with a titan or a hunter. Still undecided if I want to or not... even without selfres, warlocks are still the best

The other two characters work the same as the first. You'll do the first campaign mission and then get kicked down (literally) to 10 or whatever after the Ghaul cutscene.

I don't think it makes any difference whether you carry over or start fresh, other than if you've got an ugly character (like my black dude with blonde dreads) you can start over with a less ugly one.

Is there any advantage to carrying over characters or starting fresh? I'm not sure. The factions aren't there yet, and I have no idea if they will carry over reputation earned in D1. It's the only thing stopping me from deleting two of my old characters and going triple Warlock to power-level.

Thought about having three Hunters myself just to meet the raid light level requirements when it is released. Currently at 257 light and I have left a few milestones to hand in for a later date.

But guys... Titan master race.
Both sentinel and striker rock right now. Probably my 2 favorite subclasses in the game, and they are both titan.

I forgot about the whole past issues of three characters and swapping out for Raids, getting equipment, doing things faster, etc...
And I still can't remember. :-(
I'm not done with one character yet, but does one still have to worry about all that prior stuff? I seem to sort of recall the game has eliminated most of that past stuff with using quirky techniques to level up quicker?

Yes the only thing that is really beneficial to your 2nd character is the weapons you transfer (you don't even have to transfer them, as soon as you are lvl 20 on your 2nd you will notice your drops are heaps higher power, because your potential max power rises once you become lvl 20).
You cannot infuse armor pieces in another class anymore (aka no hunter --> titan gear infusion).
To be honest, since you probably don't want to get in as deep as you did in D1. Just focus on one character for now and play the raid. If you are stuck on a character power wise, create a second one if you like it and want to power up further.
Having 3 of the same characters is not something I would advise to you, as it basically is only to grind harder (and it is not even needed, I am 291 on my hunter (2nd character), first is titan. ).

Depends how you specify grinding. I had quite a bit of fun on my 2nd character. You get all these new subclasses too.
