Many feel the SMG's in WaW are overpowered compared to the other weapons and I have to agree. Probably 90% of my deaths come from an SMG and I'm not exaggerating that statistic in the slightest.
COD4 was so great because every gun was relatively balanced aside from the M16 and they all were different. In WaW there is seriously no balance and most of the guns are basically re-skins of one another.
What do you guys think?

Most people would point out the statistically insane MP40, but really, all the SMGs in WaW are nuts. The recoil, man! There's almost no recoil. The MP40 is the worst, but it's no worse than the P90 from COD4, and it was about medium as far as they went. Besides the MP40 - which feels like it should be a full-fledged machine gun - it feels like I'm using a bunch of upgraded Skorpion variants. But this time, there's only one automatic assault rifle. So as far as I gather, the SMGs have taken over for the ARs. I could go on, but to summarize, it feels like the categories have completely different design philosophies from COD4.

Well, the MP40 trumps the P90 in about every way in my opinion though but thats beside the point. In COD4, all the gun classes were balanced and most of the maps complimented any gun class. It makes no sense from a balance standpoint to give the SMG's dualmags and round drums as every other gun class got nerfed from 4. The MG's have a ton of sway which makes them less useful, the bolt actions have more sway than in COD4, and the single shot rifles and the shotguns clip size is terrible. So basically, every gun class got a nerf EXCEPT for the SMGs which got a boost. And don't even get me started on the console version of the MP40. It makes no sense.

I have a theory that, when they were making the game, their #1 priority was making larger maps. Then everything was balanced around this, like certain modes being cut/neutered, and weapons being balanced differently. With maps being larger, perhaps they figured that the submachine guns needed an extra boost to be viable - I guess it doesn't explain the shotguns, though. The semi-auto rifles probably needed the sway to avoid outclassing the scopeless bolt-actions, but there are so many other ways I can think of for enforcing that kind of balance.

The G43, SVT and M1A1 are still better than using a bolt action for shear power in close range.
Yes, the SMGs are good but the MP40 is overrated. Good at range, perhaps, but the Thompson has a better Time to Kill than it and has less recoil and higher fire rate. This makes it more suitable for taking on bigger numbers of enemies. Another bonus the Thompson has is the high penetration. It's essentially a buffed Skorpion crossed with an AK74u

The Thompson is basically a "normalized" Skorpion. Same clip as before, but now with standard SMG range (a little less close damage to balance) and standard SMG reload cancel. It also has the ammo drum, I guess.
And while the Thompson kills faster when every shot hits, I doubt that will happen as often as we'd like. At close range you should be hip firing and strafing, and at long range they should be moving somewhat; but if they aren't, it would be understandable that they'd die. With the basic model you've gotta hit with 3/20 at close range and 5/20 at long range; that means you need a hit% of at least 15% at close range and 20% at long range. The MP40 is a bit more forgiving with ammo and whatnot, especially since Juggernaut seems more compatible with it.
Still, I can't shake the feeling that the Type100 is just a Thompson with a much bigger clip. I dunno, I can't really see any other differences so far.

Tommy Gun also has better sights
I picked up a dualmag Type100 today in War and it seemed to fire a little slower than the Tommy? I'm not sure why. Maybe another console difference?

well Thompson has rifle bullet and better penetration I don't know what "rifle bullet" means, but penetration is reasonable, I suppose, though I wouldn't put it on par with naturally having so much more ammo. Edit: Or so I thought. I remember the Type100 having so much in a clip that it's counter would bleed into stuff to the left, but was that campaign only? Den's chart says it's normally just 30, unless I misread it. I didn't notice a *significant* difference in RPM, I imagine the effects would be negligible (less than about .2s)

Then take the drum clip for the 40 rounds. The Thompson doesn't have bad recoil so long range isn't that hard.
I'm fairly sure that 'RifleBullet' = The bullet penetration.

Yeah even though type 100 has better stats I still prefer Thompson.

riflebullet means it can go through people the mp40, thompsn, and ak-74u are the only smgs that have it. also, unscoped bolts are ridiculously good. On console their's no point in putting a scope on accept being slightly better against juggernauts or if you don't want stopping power

MP40 is trash. P90 will beat it any day of the weak because of its accuracy. Thompson beats the MP40 past close range.
It is a good gun because at close range it kills with 1 bullet to the head with stopping power and it has a bottom end damage of 29 but I still perfer the Thompson

On 360 its hard to pull of headshots so I prefer just to use thompson.

Actually the Thompson is the mini ancestor of the MP5.

Whats strange is that how come the G3 has less bullets in the clip then. If one had less shouldn't it be the other way around.

Yup.
Heckler and Koch. They make all the good guns. Hence the British use the MP5 and the HK416.

MP40 is trash. P90 will beat it any day of the weak because of its accuracy. I dunno, I've used a lot of P90 in my time, and the MP40 had a tighter grouping when I used it. Even with worse kick, it might be the reduced firing rate. They're about equal, in different ways.
