What are your opinions on shotguns and how do you think you should use them to be effective?
I think that shotguns with buckshot can be fun, but are practically useless. The pumps are great, but I usually run with shotguns in CQC, and I get killed before the second shot. When with buckshot, I use magnum, even though it doesn't do too much. The Saiga/USAS can both be very useful, but I think they are just barely underpowered. If I hit someone with all 6 pellets, they should die. But the saiga and the usas require 7, 6 with magnum on. Sure just shooting twice works, but ammo is important here(unless you run assault)
Slugs are fun. While they don't seem much different than a semi auto sniper without a scope, it is fun. My strategy for them would be to run a Saiga with the extended magazine and assault for ammo boxes. Then you get in some dense trees that gives you a view of a sniper spot. Spot a few times, and hit some triangles! I got a marksman pin using a USAS with slugs yesterday.
In general I think buckshot and slugs are both hard to use and only can be used efficiently in a few situations, but both are still fun to use.

I usually don't use shotguns, as the G3 can give me C4 for my assault and keep punch at long range.
I kill the enemies for medium-long range, rushing with a shotgun tends to get me killed.

You need a bit of discipline to use them with buckshot, as well as a different style of play. An in-your-face attitude is required, and you can play effectively with them. Although, generally, I think that they are outclassed by SMGs, and even by the M1911.
I think pump-action is overall more effective. The semi-autos don't kill fast enough, and you run out of ammo so fast that engaging multiple enemies is nigh impossible.
Slugs are an entirely different matter, and turn your shotty into a railgun. You need to be precise when aiming, but very quick kills are possible, even at length ranges.
Slugs do 100 damage at 10 meters, resulting in insta-kills in close quarters. Magnum ammo will extend that insta-kill range out to 20 meters, so it works quite well with slugs.
The Saiga with slugs behaves basically like an m14, and does similar damage. It's a 3 hit kill at any range, regardless of magnum ammo (A max of 49 dmg with MAmmo at close range, a min of 34 withought MAmmo at long range). The USAS12 sucks with slugs - for some reason, it has a damage floor of 28, and so takes 4 hits to kill at long range, and has a longer reload time to boot.

i think shotgun after the patch got powered...now buckshots hit doing large damage from great disance... According to Den's charts, shotguns with buckshot do 6 damage at range, and stop doing any damage at 18 meters. So that means that if you were using a pump and somehow all 12 hit at 18 meters, assuming none were a headshot, it would still do only 72 damage. I don't think these shotguns could ever be overpowered, unless they started giving them crazy damage values like in MW2

But they did reduce the range. The charts have the arrow pointing back for all of them with buckshot. I believe it was so that shotguns with buckshot will not be used for long range, and only for short range as they were intended.
