Hello everyone, this is my first post here. First of all i'd like to thank Den for his work and creating this site with tons of info. Thanks man!
And sorry for any mistakes in my post, English is not my native language.
I've seen here a lot of topics "best AR/smg", "aug vs famas" etc., some topics about killstreaks, but i haven't seen any discussion about perks, so i would like to show you some of my thoughts regarding them after 45+ hours of playing. I played a lot MW1 (mostly TDM and Search n Destroy), but i skipped MW2, so it's first time i've seen some of them (like Scavenger for example). I'll rate them 1-5 in their own category (so 5 blue =/= 5 green), feel free to disagree and discuss. And remember i'm rather SMG/AR run and gun person, so that can affect my judgement
Ok, let's roll.
Tier 1 (blue)
Lightweigh
Personally i think it's the worst of blue perks. Only 7% boost in speed- it can be handy, but imo all other blue perks are just better. It can be good used with Marathon (CTF, HQ), however you will lack in anti-explosion perks (Hacker, FJ) or other usefull stuff from green and blue branches. Also have in mind that aware players don't fall that much (or at all) so pro isn't very good. Not worth the effort, unless u really like running and knifing.
2/5
Scavenger
Nice perk in deathmatch games, where you run & gun a lot and quickly waste ammo (dual mags can be an alternative), but pretty useless in SnD. If you like to spam nades it can be pretty good, but i'd rather use other perks from this tier- you can always pick up someone else's weapon, and if u don't camp you will die sooner or later. Nevertheless solid choice.
3/5
Ghost
In MW1 i play almost exlusively with uav jammer, so I thought it would be also awesome in BO. It's quite good, but only pro version (for TDM). Normal version protects you only from spy planes and you have to use silencer (which means only ARs, coz smgs with silencer generally suck). Also even pro version won't help you against RX car, Blackbird, dogs and better choppers, so I'm quite aware about it's usefulness in deathmatches or objective games (except SnD, where it's quite usefull (even normal version) considering enemy's 2 kills uav with hardline). Pro version is ok (helicopter deaths drive me crazy) but it's quite hard to get, as almost nobody uses Sentry guns. So a little disappointment in this perk, but overall still good.
4/5
Flak jacket
Very underrated, but nevertheless very good perk. Usefull in every mode (even hardcore), mostly in objective run modes, like HQ, also saved my life countless times when taking "claymored" flags or planting/defusing bombs in Demo/SnD and being under nade spam. Not to mention that you can sometimes survive this annoying RC-XD car. Yesterday i was doing Tac mask challenge, so i use Scavenger and mask instead of FJ and/or Hacker, and i was really annoyed about cheap deaths from clays and nadespam. I really recommend this perk (and pro is sweet against napalm and flamethrower).
5/5
Hardline
Another very good choice, arguably the best blue perk. Quite easy to get pro, and then the fun begins. Usefull for newbies to get first killstreaks easier, usefull for pros to get high killstreaks, re-roll tactic is nice, some may say it's even overpowered. I dont't know if devs are gonna to nerf it, but as for now it's very good. After possible(?) nerf (gamble only care packages and or only own crates) it would be much weaker.
5/5 (for now)
Tier 2 (red)
Hardened
Didn't like it much in MW1, so i rarely use it here. Only usefull when shooting through walls, best with hacker or wallhack Pro version is fine. Quite solid perk, but imo there are better choices here.
3/5
Scout
Worst perk in this game. I sniped a lot in MW1, but still didn't use it. It only makes you bad sniper. In MW1 I practiced a lot with worst rifle r700 (hardcore mode) without that perk, but thanks to that i become a better player, with skills of quick targeting and shooting, and i had room for one usefull perk (extreme conditioning, ninja, whatever). Really, i don't see why any ambitious player should use this crap. Pro version is a joke. Not to mention that snipers are quite weak in Bo and maps are rather small.
1/5
Steady aim
Good perk to use with smgs (and sometimes ARs), for run'n'gun and shooting from the hip (which i prefer- saves precious seconds not spent on ADS). Faster aiming after sprint can save your life. Nice choice, especially for SnD.
4/5
Sleight of hand
Imo the best red perk. In MW1 i always wanted to use Uav jammer with SoH, now i can do that Very good in all gametypes (faster ADS is great, and quick reload saved my life like 1000 times), however i think when having SMG in SnD i would rather use Steady aim and Dual mags (which are awesome), coz usually there are 1vs1 or 1vs2 battles, not 1vsmany, so u dont need to reload that fast, and having little crosshair to shoot from the hip helps more.
5/5
Warlord
For me it's rather mediocre perk, maybe usefull for newbies that dont like/use iron sight. Dual mags/silencer work fine with that, grip and rapid fire are good too (although i like SoH and rapid fire more), and 2 extra nades can be a good choice. For example in SnD, instead of SoH u take Warlord, dual mags + other attachment and more grenades- it seems a fair deal. However in TDM or any other run'n'gun game i'd rather take SoH/SA.
3/5
Tier 3 (green)
Tactical mask
Normal version is weak (i'd say too weak), but pro version is fine- on paper. The drawback is a lot ppl don't use secondary grenades (from my observations), so the usability of that perk decreases. In SnD i see stun and flash nades quite often (nova gas i've seen like 2 times lol), so it can be a solid choice here. In other modes i don't recommend it.
3/5
Marathon
Seems mediocre, but it's very good one. Perfect for run'n'gun or getting fast into position in objective modes. It rules in CTF/Demo/HQ, nice in others. Makes a good combo with Lightweigh or Flak jacket to flank ppl or quickly arm bombs in the rain of nades.
5/5
Ninja
Good only in SnD, in rest modes there's too much chaos, shootings, explosions etc. Use it when u have good quality sound (headset). However ppl still complain about footsteps even after a patch. Not my favourite, rather rare choice.
3/5
Second chance
I can undestand tactical advantage, when a team of friends use this perk and revive themselves (something like 4 medic squad in BC2), or that can sometimes save u from loosing a killstreak, but really- it's lame and noob perk, with no skills requirement whatsoever. And very easy to counter. And it depends of your team skills and willingness to help. Meh. I say no to that kind of perks.
2/5
Hacker
Better version of my beloved Bomb squad. If u don't like deaths from claymores- this is perk for you. Pro version is nice, but can be hard to use (it's not easy to hack guarded enemy crates or good positioned mines). For me the best green perk, along with Marathon.
5/5
Generally i think that perk balance and grouping is better than this in MW1.
I wanted also to post some good combination of perks, but it really depends on game type, weapon and playstyle. My favourites are FJ/HardLine, SoH and marathon for smg running (TDM, CTF) and Ghost, Soh/SA, Hacker for SnD.
TL;DR
best blue perks Flak Jacket, Hardline; worst Lightweight
best red perks Slight of Hand, Steady aim; worst Scout
best green perks Marathon, Hacker; worst Last stand
