I was trying to play Halo:Reach with my brother tonight and we came up on a really difficult problem. ANY time it was just the two of us in a game it always always always made me the host.
The problem with this is that my internet connection is actually over a 4G internet service provider. My downstream bandwidth is okay, upstream is kinda slow, and all of it fluctuates a LOT. Basically I can play online just fine but I'm a TERRIBLE host.
My brother on the other hand has a MUCH better connection than I do, yet I'm completely unable to convince Halo to make him host, which makes any co-op or firefight games with just the two of us completely unplayable for him.
This is about as lame as it gets. Is there something I can do to force Halo to stop making me host? Is it happening perhaps because I've only played 2 multiplayer games (neither of which I hosted) and thus have a clean host record?
Can I get a host ban on purpose or somehow tank my host record intentionally?
Any help would be great, though I dunno if anybody here knows. I'd post on Bungie's forums but that place seems to mostly be a collection of 13 year old idiots that would just point fingers and call me a noob rather than helping. That or I'd get about a 1:3 information to BS ratio or worse.

Um, quitting a bunch of games might affect host record, through not sure about that.
Best thing would be to tank your ping and bandwidth when the game tests everyone for host. I don't know when this happens in Halo, it is either right before a game or when you fist select to get on multiplayer. you can do this by opening a bunch of youtube videos or something until the game has connected you. Clearing the system cache will reset your host record which would help if your brother or another person in the party has a positive host record so it will chose that person over you, otherwise it will default to you. Also, make sure that when you are joining together with your brother it is you that are joining him. Some say that it doesn't make a difference, but you never know.

Yeah we tried it both ways. My lobby, his lobby, didn't matter. I was the host everytime.
I'm actually thinking that part of what may be going on here is since it was just the two of us we basically would have had the same ping since he'd ping me and I'd ping him. You wouldn't be able to tell which of us had the slower connection by ping times alone since we only have each other to ping off of. So then it maybe just went by host record alone, and since mine was basically nil then perhaps his is slightly negative and it just defaulted to me.
Only think I can figure to do is make sure we include at least one other person so it can actually figure out who's the best host.
As for a more permanent cure I guess I'll just have to play online and get my own host record tanked. Though I feel bad for people on games I host.
I'm nervous about quitting games, though. I don't want dropped games in my history and I sure don't want to get a temp ban for it. I'm not even sure it would hurt my host record... though maybe it would. I dunno.

Do you have gold now? I'm pretty much playing Halo exclusively now, so send me an invite if you want to test your host issues with me if I'm on.

Yup I finally got regolded. I'll do that. I've still only played 2 matches in multiplayer though. heh heh Still... I don't think I'm doing too bad. In the last one I did go slightly negative but I got 15 kills and outscored all but their top player who got 25, and that was in a 3 vs 4 game where my brother and the other guy only got 4 kills each. (My bro hasn't played Halo in a long time and had been playing BO all night, kept hitting the wrong buttons and all. heh Kinda funny, but he was seriously frustrated.)
Still another loss, but I should definitely get online and start playing it. I'll hit you up if I see you on. Guess I'll have to dig up my headset too... (My bro and our friends use Skype while we xbox because the xbl codec is horrible, though skype prolly does suck up a lot more bandwidth.)

BTW I posted on bungie.net too. Definitely a lost of blah on there, but maybe some constructive comments too. Nothing conclusive, though. I'm still thinking my theory about there only being two players in the lobby makes it not be able to tell who has the better connection makes sense. I think I need to tank my hosting record. ;p
