The last time I read something on this topic (probably at least two weeks ago), the basic consensus was that we don't know what exactly contributes to gaining weapon XP for a certain gun/launcher. But I figured some of you might have done some testing, or be able to tell from experience. So here goes.
Which actions contribute to the weapon XP you gain during a match? The only thing I'm completely positive about is killing enemy soldiers and (at least in the case of launchers) point streak rewards. Which of the following might also grant you weapon XP?
- scoring headshots (i.e. do you get increased XP for headshots) - getting assists in killing an enemy - dealing damage to an enemy, then finishing them off with your other weapon / a grenade etc. - getting assists with the Riot Shield (deflect enemy bullets, then let your teammates kill the enemy) - knifing enemies (with or without the Tactical Knife attachment) - getting kills with the Masterkey or grenade launcher
You are my bro, bro.

I thought that marksman challenges went into weapon XP but either they dont or mine bugged out last night. I had the striker at level 20 and got a couple kills with it and completed the Marsman V challenge worth 10,000 XP and was excited to hopefully move up a few levels to get range and after the game was over gun was still at level 20 and barley moved up in rank.
I am pretty sure the prestige veteran challenge kills count towards weapon XP since I had 499 kills with a secondary at the start of this presitage, got 1 kill and the weapon reached max level after 1 kill.
It would be nice if IW would come out and tell us for christ sakes.

I almost figured certain challenges factor into this as well, because I'm occasionally having games where my level 21 gun shoots up to 23 or even 24, but then most games, the bar only fills up by 1/3.

Accessory challenges definitely count towards it.

I believe the only things that count are:
1) # of kills - @100xp per kill 2) any weapon challenges for that weapon
The best way to level up weapons is probably FFA. The worst is search.

I split screen tested the Barrett .50 Cal, and when it was about level 22 or 23, and it had just reached that weapon rank, getting the marksman challenge for 250 kills or whichever that one is, immediately pushed the weapon rank to the next level - after only about 2 or 3 kills.
So my understanding is that marksman challenges contribute noticeably towards your weapon rank.

It definitely cannot be just weapon challenges and kills, I have hit level 28 for damage on multiple shotguns and the difference (besides the obvious Model 1887) is at most 100 kills for each shottie. Maybe it has to do with match EXP?

There's one way to find out whether it includes match XP - I'll split screen test domination for about five games, and see if getting match XP or capturing points contributes to your weapon rank whilst it's equipped.
I'll post it back soon enough.

- getting assists in killing an enemy
- dealing damage to an enemy, then finishing them off with your other weapon / a grenade etc. - getting assists with the Riot Shield (deflect enemy bullets, then let your teammates kill the enemy)
- knifing enemies (with or without the Tactical Knife attachment) - getting kills with the Masterkey or grenade launcher - maybe yes? because the kill-feed shows the weapon not the launcher.
strikethroughs are definitely no's

Thanks for all the input, bros. Marksman challenges factoring in makes a lot of sense; yesterday I was using my level 25 Barrett, and I was nowhere near leveling up, but then I completed a challenge, received a character level-up, and a my weapon was pushed to level 27 after the match. Challenges for the different attachments (Ishbane called them "accessories"; do you think this includes proficiencies, as well?) giving you extra weapon XP sounds intriguing. - knifing enemies (with or without the Tactical Knife attachment)Reading this makes me dislike the TacKnife on my ninja class :/. If that's true, I'll have to go back to silencing my pistol, at least until I've ranked them all up to 10 (that's the max for secondaries, right?).

sorry im not sure about tac knife, but defenatly normal knifing. The game's tips also says that destroying enemy equipment or air support goes towards exp so like, shooting a bouncing betty? or taking down a heli with an AR?

so 300 kills with speed does nothing for weapon xp?....

I just get kills and not even worry about anything else....
....and the gun levels up. Seems like 500 kills or so gets you near level 30. Doing the other things, is pretty much only splitting hairs. Like maybe, at best, saving you a few games or so, before you fully level up.

sorry im not sure about tac knife, but defenatly normal knifing. Alright, maybe I'll just try a TacKnife only game soon and see whether I get any weapon XP or not. The game's tips also says that destroying enemy equipment or air support goes towards exp so like, shooting a bouncing betty? or taking down a heli with an AR? I sort of assumed this to be the case as well, but couldn't confirm anything yet. I frequently down enemy UAVs and even attack choppers with my AR (finally a decent use for Scavenger Pro ). I just get kills and not even worry about anything else.... ....and the gun levels up. Seems like 500 kills or so gets you near level 30. I had the same line of thinking at first, but I'm going to level every primary up to 30, and starting in the early 20s, I feel like it's getting somewhat tedious. I've started completing all the attachment challenges now, and each one that I finish adds a nice little boost to the green bar.

the attachments challenges are definitely worth it. each gives you 750 - 1000 weapon xp... that's a lot.

the attachments challenges are definitely worth it. each gives you 750 - 1000 weapon xp... that's a lot. . . . . Except where the really bad attachments are concerned. For example, by the time you get 40 kills using an ACOG on an SMG, you probably could have gotten 50+ kills using a non-terrible attachment and you'd be equal or ahead in terms of weapon XP (because 10 kills = 1000 WXP).

Isn't it only 20 kills with ACOGs? 20 kills for 750xp I think.
The one attachment I just can't seem to use is the Hybrid Scope. It bounces around SO MUCH when strafing while ADS to the point where it will throw your aim off considerably. Add in Stalker so you're strafing even faster and it's just a miserable attachment altogether.

Red Dot and Holographic on the shotguns are pretty awful, considerung you're actually reducing your effectiveness when aiming as opposed to hip-firing with Stedy Aim. And yeah, ACOG on the SMGs = not nice... Fortunately, it is indeed only 20 kills you need, so I'll probably go through with that.
And yeah, don't get me started on the abomination that is the Hybrid Scope... I've fortunately completed that on my M4A1. But man, the headbob/viewbob when walking + aiming with this thing is insane. Add to that the non-existent memorization of which scope you used last upon switching to the gun, and you've got yourself one sorry excuse for an attachment.

500 kills will get you to level 30 however to get to level 31 will require another 500!
Going from level 1-30 is about the same as lvl 30-31!

Fred is pretty much on point.
I did find that if I did all the attachment challenges I was able to get to 31 with between 800-850 kills depending on the weapon.

do kills in TDM count for as much in Dom or Drop Zone? because ive just been tactical loitering in Drop Zone to level my L86 but havent noticed it leveling much faster than when i leveled it purely through TDM, and im usually getting atleast 30 kills a game with it on DZ
