Was wondering if anyone was following this game at all, or had played the original. Been a long time lurker on this forum, but this game makes want to spread the news to anyone that might not have heard about it. The sheer scale of this game is what really blows people away, but even with their limited number of players at their demonstration, planetside 2 still received several "best of show" awards at E3. It's an MMO FPS. 3 different teams in an ongoing war on a persistent world. The maps are huge; 64 square km, with up to 2000 players at a time. A ton of organizational / leadership tools to coordinate squads, platoons, clans, and entire factions...or you can just go lonewolf and have plenty of fun doing it that way as well. Planetside 1 had a much different feel to it than other shooters, and some didn't like it for this reason. This time around, the game is supposed to appeal more to CoD/ BF players. It's an MMO, but it's an FPS first. A guy that's been playing for 2 years will still have his a.s.s handed to him by a better player thats only been in the game for 2 hours. Higher rank does not ensure victory. Character progression gives you the flexibility of more options, not raw power or increased health. Being free to play, the game is supported by microtransactions. The dev team has emphasized that any items relating to even the slightest competitve advantage will be earned ingame, and cash shop will only be used to purchase things that don't give a direct advantage over other players, like cosmetic customizations for your character. Won't cost you a dime, so it's at least worth a look for any of you guys that frequent this forum. I personally can't wait....the original planetside was an experience that no other game has even come close to. Here's a fanmade trailer that seems better than any of the official ones released so far: This video is filled with a lot of good info, and will answer many common questions you might have about how the game works: www.gamespot.com/planetside-2/videos/the-growing-battlefield-in-planetside-2-6381290/Anyone that wants a beta key (starts in a few weeks), the art director of PS2 is just giving them out...no strings attached. Oh, and... You are my bro, bro.

Approximately six days from now, the official full trailer for Planetside 2 will be released and the free month for Planetside 1 following "Planetside Day" will be nearing its end.

what are your thoughts on the sequel? ...and were you invited to the tech test? From what i gather, it was mostly players with very high end PCs (not me, unfortunately).

If you can ignore the corny slogan, take a look at the teaser for the full trailer that Den mentioned:

Overall, I didn't like much of Planetside, though I still enjoy playing it.
Even though I would otherwise be the sneaky hit and run infantryman outfitted for variety in any other FPS, the combat in PS1 was just awful (and my PC at the time could barely handle Planetside). I relegated myself to being the AMS driver and Combat Engineer, focusing on support, laying minefields/defenses and turrets. I avoided combat as much as possible because almost everything about combat was... bad. The heavy use of explosive weapons and ridiculous amounts of spam. The extremely narrow hallways and chokepoints in every base even further promoting that spam. Light and Medium weapons having zero underdog potential against Heavy infantry weapons because there is almost no means to employ any kind of skill or tactics or cover in a fight due to the extremely simple nature of weapon handling, latency and collision boxes. Air vehicles being so utterly simplistic, fearing virtually nothing from the ground unless there was a massive amount of AA firing at them, it all is unappealing. The completely limit free Certification system allowing a single player to become nothing short of a master of all trades, a self-sufficient Medic-Engineer-Heavy-Weapon-Hacker all at once. Most space between bases not having much in the way of strategic leverage, at best a short standoff immediately outside at outposts.
I think one of the biggest strengths strength of Planetside was its persistence and foundation of tasks that existed outside of combat. A logistical element like maintaining the energy level of a base, establishing defensive fields, clearing/occupying key locations, repairing base facilities or hacking enemy facilities. Taking an ANT to a warpgate, filling up and bringing it to bases to recharge them. Using an AMS to quickly use ACE modules to lay mines across a large area.
Planetside 2 is looking to address a lot of that. More open, varied bases with multiple points of interest rather than a single Control Console and the Spawn Tubes. Much better soldier mobility, actual collision detection with potential for headshots. Weapons that are hopefully balanced to different strengths amongst one another rather than "Standard < Medium < Heavy & Special Weapons" in nearly all cases. Much greater physics on vehicle handling, aircraft that are not nearly as simple and easy, AA that seems to be more effective on an individual level. Reasonable limitations with the Class system preventing masters of all trades, but not so limiting that a player may feel "stuck" having things he doesn't like with things he does like (ala Battlefield forcing a single type of weapon to each class). A territory control setup with hexagonal spaces creating a wide and present frontline to fight across rather than simply jumping to the next connected base, each Hex offering its own resource and tactical benefits.
I fear that the logistical side may have been reduced a bit too much, automated with little player influence outside of what hexes they own. For example, no more ANT, apparently. Though they have suggested that they were thinking of extra things to go with their mission system, like escort missions with AI controlled convoys you could defend. I would be all over that.
But who knows until I actually get my hands on it.

A lot of good points, and I agree with most of them.
But I dont think there was THAT huge a difference between heavy and medium weapons. Heavy only worked at closer ranges, but the medium assault shotgun worked fairly well there too. I spent many years using it, going up against countless heavy assault weapon users. I rarely lost a fight to a player that wasn't noticeably better than me. I used to percieve HA weapons as being vastly superior to medium as well. Then I built a new PC that ran the game at a solid framerate...and i was able to see all i'd been missing.
Base design was pretty poor, can't argue with that.
The cert system kept things fairly balanced until they started raising level cap and giving out more and more cert points. The era of one man army super soldier really put a hurt on the gameplay.
And yes, aircraft were a joke in that game. The flight mechanic was non-existent. Any players with half a brain could jump in a reaver and rack up kills with impunity...and you wouldn't believe how fiercely these jerkoffs would defend the "skill" of their playstyle whenever it was threatened with idea of possible balancing.
There was, however, one thing i REALLY liked about combat in that game: How long it took to die. Any FPS games i'd played before or after that: counterstrike, COD, or BF...death was as quick as it took an enemy to see you. PS was different. It allowed me to react to enemy fire, and if my aim was better than his, i'd come out on top. If there was cover nearby, I had a chance to get behind it. It was nice not dying to 2 or 3 lucky hits from a couple terrible players spraying their weapons uncontrollably!

Well what I saw from some alpha footage, and I know that's susceptible to change, the general infrantry gun model seems to be low recoil, high base spreads I'd prefer a compromise system like BF3, but let's see the beta first
Question, if you have to guess a percentage, how much of the fighting is in vehicles vs fighting on foot?

Question, if you have to guess a percentage, how much of the fighting is in vehicles vs fighting on foot? That is entirely up to you. Planetside2 is so vast, and full of so many different roles, you're never forced into a playstyle that you don't enjoy. As far as the indoor base fights are concerned, you don't have to participate if you don't want to. Every piece of territory on the map yields resources. There will be battles everywhere. With so many to choose from, you're not going to forced into a type of fight that you don't care for. Outdoor fights: this isn't the BF series, where a couple guys get the vehicles and everyone else is stuck on foot. If they wish, everyone can have their own tank, plane, buggy, etc. But that doesn't make playing on foot any less viable; the vehicles are balanced around the foot soldiers. Playing as infantry in the giant outdoor battles was something I really enjoyed in Planetside 1...but i also had a blast flying around a bomber, blowing tanks and carpet bombing foot soldiers who thought they were safe on catwalks inside the base walls. The diversity in PS1 was incredible; there was something - or many things - for everyone. I imagine it'll only be that much better in PS2 You play how you want, where you want - and the game will support it 100%. *edit* And remember it's not just combat. There are plenty of support roles to be filled. Vehicles don't get far without repairs from engineers (who also fortify bases). Medics are needed to heal and revive teammates. Dedicated dropship pilots are always in demand by airborne infantry outfits (outfit = clan in PS2). Or maybe you're the type that likes to move the chess pieces across the board; there's already a wide array of organization / command tools that have been mentioned, and i'm sure many more will rise from the beta. If coordinating squad, platoon, outfit, or even empire strikes on key targets is your thing, there will be plenty of opportunity here.

Low recoil + high spread is the worst kind of shooting. Aside from the ridiculous suppression, I think BF3 has found a good balance between recoil and spread. That's one of the things that turns me off of this game, as I'm not a huge vehicle guy, and I want my infantry experience to be as good as possible. Anyway, I can deal with it if there's a lot of support options and infantry balanced vehicles like mentioned.

Vehicles were readily available, but the giant movements of foot soldiers were far more prominent. Flying in a plane or driving a ground vehicle was certainly a faster way to get around, but that massive infantry battle was just an experience that couldn't be had any other way. Just got an invite for the Technical Test a few hours ago. What kind of hardware is your PC running? I've yet to hear of anyone with a low end machine, like mine, get into the tech test.

In the Planetside 2 Hardware Survey, most of my choices were around second or third best in each list. i5 2500K, 6870HD, 8GB RAM.

Let us know how it runs then. My setup is pretty similar. Of course, if the battles are as large and hectic as I'm led to believe, I'll probably just lower the settings anyway.

Let us know how it runs then. My setup is pretty similar. Of course, if the battles are as large and hectic as I'm led to believe, I'll probably just lower the settings anyway. The world(server) consists of 3 continents(maps). Each one supporting 666 players from each of the game's 3 empires. So yeah...big. There was a post from the Planetside Universe forum (great source of info on the game btw) that did a decent job of explaining how it works, to people who are coming from CoD / BF and aren't familiar with this type of game. It was in response to a guy asking how easy it would be for him to play with a group of his friends; getting everyone on the same team, reserved slots to be sure everybody gets in the server, etc. "you choose a faction - you don't get slotted into a team to keep the numbers even in the fight. Your friends will always play together. You will not be auto-balanced to the other team, you will not have to choose which friends to play with... you will always be in the right team with your buddies alongside you." "This game doesn't have private servers. There are no instances, no private rooms, no lobby, no match-making service, no battle-grounds for pvp, no separate mechanism of any kind to separate you from your friends and from your enemies. There are no servers with custom configs. No custom community maps to install. The map is one huge frikkin consistent world that plays out whichever way you like. Rush 10 guys defending a base with 300 buddies? guess what! Those 10 guys are going to have a hell of a time screaming for reinforcements and fighting you and your overwhelming odds. Those guys will lose not because "teams are not fair" but because their empire did not respond in time to assist with sufficient manpower and resources. Tragic? maybe, but that's war for you. There is no separation, no slots, no limitations. There's just endless, seamless terrain, dotted by bases, towers and other features. These can be fought on without "Declaring" about it. You don't enter and exit zones. You don't connect to regions or a RvR area. The map never resets and your enemies aren't pushed back to their starting point when their assault is done and the timer restarts. It's one big war-zone with no boundaries." This is the same way the original game played out, as well. Even now, 9 years later, ever other FPS game I've played seems to just fall short of that unique experience. Can't wait to see it happen again, and I encourage everyone to try it out. Won't cost you a dime - why not?

^ Sounds pretty epic. Now, whether the game will deliver on that promise or not - only time will tell. Def. interested in it, and once i get some sufficient equipment(should happen before the end of this century) i'd definietely be happy to try it out. Then again i've never anyone to play these shooters with, so it may go a bit south from what it was described as in the post above.
