Also, how can I help? For the past year or so I've made a nice living making gun reviews on YouTube. It's been about 95% just reading and drawing conclusions from members of these forums. There is some testing and original data but nothing compared to what you guys put out. For Black Ops 2, I want to contribute more.
I'm pretty sure you guys decrypt or break down the game's code to get this but is there any specifics on how? Any way I can help? I'm assuming a PC copy of the game is needed, but what's next? Decryption? Self testing? Spreadsheet making?

Yes, you'll need a PC version and how easy data is to obtain is dependent on whether or not Treyarch will encrypt their data files. COD4 and Black Ops 1 have unencrypted files: all you have to do is take the iw_xx (where xx is a number) and unzip it. One of the files will have the data for weapons: the COD4 file is iw_11 and the BO1 is iw_00. From there, you can determine essentially all the statistics for weapons you need.
MW2/MW3 files are encrypted, however, and so you can't just unzip them and be done with it. In that case, it requires hands on testing and (eventually) decryption from which you can (presumably) then simply read the stats like you could with COD4/BO1. Den or Marvel would be able to shed more light on this aspect than me.
If you have Steam, I can send you a gift copy of COD4 I've had in my inventory for a while so you can check out the files. Alternatively, I can probably just upload the one file containing the weapons.

What I've learned over my time on the DK Forums is that Marvel's your man when it comes to coding, decryption and stats! As far as getting it yourself you'll just have to hope that Treyarch don't encrypt their files like crazy. But thanks to Marvel though, we now have COD4 through MW3 spreadsheets with everything we'd ever want to know PS. Had a bit of a fan-boy moment when I saw the name 'Drift0r'

Anything that isn't encrypted needs testing to be sure. For example, we don't know the gunkick values for most MW3 LMGs, and that is most of their recoil. It's hard to determine what is exactly without any numbers, since there are multiple variables that could be having an effect on it.
And BTW, the M4A1 damage drop goes from 20m to 35m, vs your 14m to 26m, while the SCAR-L is from 30m to 40m, vs your 22m to 34m.

Alternatively, I can probably just upload the one file containing the weapons. I already uploaded the CoD4 files and added links for the other games. denkirson.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=4943If you have the game on PC, you can find image, sound and weapon files in the iwd archives (I use 7-Zip to open them). Since Modern Warfare 2, the weapon files are encrypted and stored in a fastfile (common_mp.ff). Patched weapon files (like the Model 1887 in Modern Warfare 2) are stored in another fastfile (patch_mp.ff). They haven't been decrypted yet (as far as I know). Treyarch included the weapon files of Black Ops in one of the iwd archives and the Mod Tools, although the patched weapon files are missing (FAMAS). The Modern Warfare 2 files were dumped thanks to NTAuthority.

Just keep testing doo-doo out. And remember that if you are unsure about how doo-doo works, feel free to ask about it. I don't like seeing you get simple stuff wrong because well you have your reasons. Or if you are doing some sort of big video, you can ask someone to proof read like, like what Y260 would, but only if you are afraid of mistakes. But as others have said, PC version + unencrypted files is the way to go. Blah, blah, blah, I'm not making much sense.
No I'm not gonna go all fanboy on you. I'm sure it happens enough as is.

The best way to help this site is by playing the game. Offer opinions on things. Use weird attachment/perk combos. Use underused everything. Marvel or (gasp!) Den will probably have the BO2 weapon files up day one, assuming Treyarch doesn't put the files on lock down ALA MW3. Also, post more. We need a public representation in the form of a popular YouTuber to get the knowledge out.
All that testing and reporting you did for the false weapon balance pass is a perfect example of how to help us. Stat junkies always get the shaft when it comes to the community.

I was in a crazy time crunch there and just got the data from Symthic.com. I thought that site was accurate, no? Glad to hear it could be a relatively easy process if the files are unencrypted. If the files are encrypted, like MW3 (right?) how tough is the encryption and is there is sane method to break it?

Probably all but easy If the hundreds of stat-focused people that play MW3 aren't able to do it

I'm more on the testing side around here, Marvel4 or Den are (I believe) the most capable to explain you the process.

You don't need a PC version of the game. Most of MW3's stats are done by hand, and bro-testing. I think the RoF's came from XboxAhoy's videos, where he gives stats on guns.
Mw3's stats have only been given to XboxAhoy (he was hired by Activision), and no one else. GunKick as far as I know has never ever been known.
It's a damn shame.

Most of MW3's stats are done by hand, and bro-testing. This is generally this site's secret sauce. You aren't going to find a more dedicated group of nerds. Feel free to jump in...if you dare. Marvel/Den bring the pudding. The site decides the proper way to serve the pudding. If the store is all out of pudding everyone gets together and comes up with a consensus on the very best way to to make the pudding from scratch. Then they make the pudding...from scratch. Then they decide the proper way to serve it. Then they serve it. The rest of the world just eats the pudding.

I don't know why the game developers don't just give us the numbers in the first place. They're gonna get figured out eventually...
Also, they shouldn't have to worry about people only using one gun from what they perceive the best to be when taking into account the numbers because all the guns should be balanced anyways, right?
Right guys?

Xcal lurks ME3 forums not COD forums. He barely plays cod anymore anyway, in comparison to his other content. Cod is an important part of his channel, and let's face it gets the most views, but he really only plays a tonne of it when the new releases come out.
