building a computer is fairly easy. if you mastered the square-peg in square-hole game as a toddler, then you can build a computer. specs: none, really. gave my primary rig away for now, and all i got for the time being is something i threw together from parts that other people literally threw away D: runs bf3 on high 1920x though.

I use my laptop for gaming; get ready to laugh. -OS: Windows 7 Home premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) -Intel i3-350M processor, M350 @ 2.27 GHz (4CPUs), 2.3GHz -NVidia GeForce GT 330M, 1 GB VRAM -4GB DDR3 Memory -640 GB HDD -14.0" 16:9 1366x768 LED LCD -DirectX 11 -Model is a Gateway: ID49C01h BIOS: InSydeH2O v1.00
There's nothing all that special about my peripherals, but there you have it. There are gaming laptops out there with NVidia GPUs in them.

My computer unfortunately suffers from a manufacturer design problem in that it dissipates heat poorly and thus overheats. At 100% capacity it overheats within 10 minutes. I have to run the processor at 75% capacity to remain stable. (It's a Dell Laptop)

When I first got my laptop I could play Skyrim on Ultra and it would barely break a sweat. Two years later my processor can barely keep 30FPS on a Source Engine game. You could take your laptop to any electronics store and ask for some thermal grease. It'll cost you $60 and a few hours without your laptop depending on how busy they are; keep in mind some stores have been known to charge up to $100. I'd also recommend investing in a laptop cooler too, especially if the vents on your laptop go out the bottom.

Foxtrotting hell, isn't that overkill? SSD's only reduce loading times and make the computer generally faster (Not in gaming though, execpt start-up times) Also, your image doesn't work. Anyone with great Google fu, help me with find good instructions for beginners. Seriously, after browsing all kinds of tutorials, they always miss something, like how you know the part is in right place or what kind of case is recommended for certain parts or what case is generally good for gaming or what things you have to watch out for when building. This is coming from someone that has only experience in opening the case and cleaning the parts.

Not really, it was only like $200. Maybe 3 years before that I payed $120 for a 60gb SSD. And I would use a regular drive , but its too loud. Im a silence freak.
Most parts only fit in the right spot. There may be times where something is recommended to go in one slot rather than another of the same slot, but its not going to kill anything to use the other. If something feels loose, then its probably in the wrong spot. Sometimes you can fit PCI cards into the wrong spot but it wont be tight. Anyway you'll probably only have a PCI-E x16 card [the graphics card] unless you have a sound card, ethernet card, or something else out of the ordinary- and this one is the long slot. Cant miss it.
As for cases, any standard ATX motherboard supporting case would be fine. Just make sure if you have a long graphics card, there is space for it. Lots of cheap cases have hard drive bays blocking larger cards. A simple google would help you find a case oriented to what you want [Silence/Ease of Use/Cooling]. Generally recommended would be a CoolerMaster HAF X if it doesnt burn your eyes. An issue you might run into here is that if you buy an aftermarket CPU cooler [Ex:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233087] then things like side panel fans [Ex:http://cdn.overclock.net/6/6b/6b86c228_HAF-X-Left-Side-panel-big.jpeg] can block the door from closing.

weeeeeeell...but there is a line. something that will cost you 200 bucks now might just cost you 100 in a few months. spending twice the price on a 10% boost in performance is what he meant by overkill i guess. not uncommon especially when new GPUs come out, hehe.

Eh, but unless you've got the money, overkill is overkill.
Say buying a 240GB SSD for $1000 in the past. 3 years down, its 1/5th the price and 3x-100x the speed [depending on application]. So now you've got slow SSD and you payed a hell of a lot more for it. Now its obsolete, as you've clearly got the money for something better. So why bother paying that much in the first place when you could have got 4 60gb SSDs for $500? I'd say thats overkill.
Personally I dont spend a lot of money on anything but electronics so I dont mind putting a good amount towards them, but I'll never go for the best of the best, as the price/performance degrades immensely. Say 7970 vs 7950. +~$80-120, [~25-40% more $], gets you ~5-15% better performance. Not worth it. For me its overkill, but I can see it being worth it to some people. That's probably not really overkill, then.
Maybe im going off tangent here?

so, a question for the pc savy bros:
currently i'm assembling a backup pc until i get a "real" one again in summer. i have here a 3,1ghz tripple core amd cpu, and a 2,5ghz phenom 2 quadcore. which one would be better suited for games? anyone knows?

In general, games are very lightly threaded, meaning they often won't take advantage of multiple cores. However, I'd like to know what the specific CPUs are. Phenom is generally well regarded as one of AMD's best offerings.

thanks for your help phale. i'm a bit lost when it comes to cpu's other than intel quadcores.
the tricore is a Athlon II x3 3.1ghz, the quad a Phenom 9850 2,50ghz. both are already in my possession, so price is not an issue. there will be rather powerful air cooling, so overclocking is a possibility. keep also in mind that i'll want to play arma2, which is kind of goofy when it comes to CPUs..

Yes, overall they are pretty close, but if you look at the Cinebench R10: Single Threaded Benchmark, you see that the Athlon outperforms the Phenom by a quite significant margin. Since games (and most programs) are lightly threaded, the Athlon is better for gaming. The Phenom would probably be better for video editing and rendering. This is a classic example of a light thread vs. heavy thread comparison.

It's pretty and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
I'm not a computer guy either...so it was only later that I learned that I could have done something similar for less.
Seriously though...no regrets.

Believe it or not, I have managed to come across a laptop similiar to the one in the OP. According to YT, it can run battlefield 3 without spontaneous frame rate drops, so its more than good enough for me. PC master race, here I come.

The best gaming laptop I've seen was a Lenovo Y580 with i7-3630QM and GTX660M for $850. That was around thanksgiving, I don't know what the price will be now.
