Recently I purchased a turtle beach headset buying into the hype of customizing my audio with their Advanced Sound Editor(ASE). The problem is that you need to know the frequencies of sounds you want to adjust in order to make full use or really any good use of this feature.
With that said does anyone know what frequencies in Black ops 2 do the following game sounds occur: footsteps - equipment usage - jumping - climbing - impacts with metallic objects (like bumping a car or barrel) - reloading - ammo pickups -
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Audacity can display the spectrograms. I have expermented with a custom EQ on recordings just for curiosity's sake. I have no method of applying the EQ to live gameplay. It is not that hard to determine the correct frequencies, but they almost certainly vary per map and per surface type.
I would evaluate such EQing as "effective" and "unfair".

I have the px5 too, with the ASE program.
I basically just download the user-made footstep presets available online. And don't forget that footsteps have different sounds depending on ground type. Metal, sand, and indoor marble-ish flooring have higher-pitched sound than say dirt, water, or concrete flooring. Generally speaking, the higher-end footsteps are usually much more clear than the low footsteps so if you had to choose either or, try to focus on the lower end of the footstep spectrum.

Interesting. Never heard of a headset offering a feature like this, too bad it's probably on a wireless TB headset.
Louder footsteps are a godsend and reward awareness in s&d, but I'm of the opinion you shouldn't have to go so far to have an edge on sound awareness. Let footsteps be loud, there's other means of decompressing the skill gap, but cod developers will never do that.
For BO2, I'm kind of glad I can use Tac Mask over Dead Silence, because stun and flash are absurdly powerful, shock charges stun and damage you, and can be planted on walls. I'm hard pressed to not use it, even in BO2 search.

So is the XP7 like the PX5 then? I'd be interested in a headset that could make certain footstep sounds practically audible within relatively short distances. It's kind of retarded the amount of times I see two players, on either side, nearly bypass each other because, partly, the lack of audio cues. And it should mean fewer derpy killcams too!

Turtle Beaches? Worst headset I ever owned was their PX5. I went through 4 of them by the time the warranty ran out on mine. Absolute trash.
The sound editor thing wasn't even that useful. I never managed to hear anything I wouldn't have heard with normal settings anyways.

I never treated them rough, they were just flimsy as shit. I suppose that's what you get for £45 / $70. I've had my £200 / $300 Astro A40's for almost a year now and they're freaking great. As well as 7.1 surround sound, they're also really sturdy and durable.

I've had great luck with my refurb XP500s.They eat batteries, though. Also don't see the need for the additional presets;bass and treble boost more than enough.

I have wireless TB X41. They have 5.1 surround, "bass boost" button, and are indeed flimsy like expensive electronics delicately wrapped in paper. If you pick them up wrong the ear cup flops to the side and sounds like it breaks. Recently the audio cable for the mic needs to be fiddled with a lot because it causes loud popping static if it's not in the perfect position. I've had them for over a year, and they've had a slight hissing sound since day 1.
Basically, they work, they're not bad, but the build quality is shit. I'm opting for Astro's for my next set.

ive heard of every TB headset being paper thin except X11. I have X11. 3 of my friends has X11s. One of my friends is insane and throws his controller lately. All going strong. That being said as far as quality goes theyre nothing special, but theyre cheap as fu ck. I've had three x11s. I own 2 at the moment. One for the computer. One for the Xbox. Got the most recent one for 26$.They have all served me well. The only bad part is the flimsy swivel connection. Nothing a little duct tape doesn't fix though. I've always heard better than my friends with these things even if they do have super spensive headsets.

I currently use a Sennheiser headset with a MixAmp if I need to connect to console. Sure, it isn't the cheapest option out there, but it definitely sounds the best of anything you could possibly get on console.

I have Sennheiser HD600s but my wife wants me to be able to hear the children, so I normally listen using Tannoy studio monitors (in my office). But the Martin Logan speakers in the living room beat all of the above.

I had turtle beach PX51s for two days. They put a POS power button on them that rattles so I sent them back and my A40s get here tomorrow.

From my side? The ones I use are PX21s. Not sure if that's anything brilliant but the right speaker broke off at one point -- this was fixed with tape since I couldn't be arsed to spend another 100$. That, and they're sufficient as is in my experience.

I use an Astro Mixamp with Sennheiser HD595s. Sounds great, and the headphones are extremely comfortable. I have a cheap pair of Turtle Beaches that I use for the integrated mic for Skype and PS3. They don't actually sound that bad for what they are, but wearing them for more than 40 minutes at a time is a miserable uncomfortable experience. I'm thinking of grabbing some sort of clip-on mic to let my Sennheisers do more work, maybe an AntLion ModMic, anyone here have any first hand experience with them?
Listening for footsteps is practically a lost cause in Black Ops 2 though. I think instead of running Awareness I'd probably be better off running around with Dexterity and more importantly using the brainpower that is straining to try to hear the nonexistent audio cues from the game on what's appearing on my screen.

But the Martin Logan speakers in the living room beat all of the above. Apparently a love of shielding isn't the only thing we have in common. From my side? The ones I use are PX21s. Not sure if that's anything brilliant but the right speaker broke off at one point -- this was fixed with tape since I couldn't be arsed to spend another 100$. That, and they're sufficient as is in my experience. If you guys are paying $100 for turtle beaches, I'd highly recommend a pair of AudioTechnica ATH-AD700's.... www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-AD700-Open-air-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B000CMS0XU/ref=sr_1_5?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1351646306&sr=1-5&keywords=headphones$100 bucks and free shipping, can't beat that. These cans will smoke any headphones made by any gamimg manufacturer, Astro included. Basically, they work, they're not bad, but the build quality is doo-doo. I'm opting for Astro's for my next set. Do yourself a favor and grab the Astro Mixamp, but get the headphones above instead. Better soundstage (what you're really needing when soundwhoring), better build quality. Here's a great review on Amazon that may help a bit: Audio Technica ATH-AD700 I had Astro A40's prior. I kept my mixamp but these headphones are amazing. Positioning is just sick! Love them for gaming and would recommend them to anyone!!! You're probably looking at the picture of the AD700s thinking...'God purple...who wants purple on headphones...and beige, I don't even own anything in beige!'. I kept thinking to myself, everything in my entertainment room is some tone of black, sliver-grey, chrome, or white in various combinations. These cans would be an eyesore to the the subtle contrasts present in my Shrine of Electronica. However, you may have, like me, been told repeatedly by friends and fellows about how awesome the AD700s perform. You may have noticed nearly every thread asking 'what phones should I get' whether for gaming, music, or movies these get recommended many times over. How comfortable is that weird headband though? The answers to any doubts are rather simple and can forgo the subjective listener lingo so many..audiophiles feel the need to use. It's like this: I owned HD555s since 07, and Astro A40s since 09(and the 2011 model!). The HD555s are really nice, especially for music. The A40s are really nice, especially for games/movies. I would switch between the two of them for each of their respective strengths. When I received the AD700s in Dec 2011...I stopped switching between them. In fact, I've only worn my HD555s for doing a listening comparison and other tests since then. The same would be true for my A40s if it wasn't for my Xbox 360. The AD700s are amazing. Their reputation is well earned. At the price you can get them I don't think there's any competing product which can match it's price>performance. That headband. At first it felt kind of weird...but never uncomfortable. After a few days it became clear my appreciation for the AD700s had far exceeded my expectations. It's always comfortable and requires no adjusting. One worry I had was the spring might have issues over time. So far, no issues. The only con to their fit is that the earpads have a tendency to shift which leads to the ears not resting right. Easily remedied. You simply grab the inside edge and rotate it back into place. The frequency of this is no doubt due to how often I'm cleaning my equipment with a rubbing alcohol dampened rag. I'm fairly certain that being able to adjust these pads is part of the design as well. As to colors..due to it's performance and the enjoyment from that it's odd appearance grows on you. The association of the AD700s with providing an amazing sonic experience far overshadows any annoyances caused by aesthetic conflicts. I prefer the AD700s over HD555s/A40s. It's a preference many share with others and it led to my ownership of the AD700s. Chances are, after using the AD700s you'll share this preference. -It should be noted, that attempting to use good headphones without a suitable headphone amp will result in subpar performance. My experiences, comparisons, and resulting preference were done using both the Astro Mixamp and a Xonar STX. They all sound better with the Xonar STX . Also, if the Bass isn't enough for you just tweak the 30 and 60 slider in your SoundCards EQ. This is my gaming setup: PlayStation 3 160GB System Seagate Momentus 1TB 5400RPM SATA 3Gb/s 8 MB Cache 2.5-Inch Internal Notebook Hard Drive STBD1000100 - Bare Drive Premium Optical Toslink Audio Cable for Xbox 360, PS3, Tivo, HDTV, A/V Receiver, Cablebox, etc. 6 Feet (2Meter) Astro Gaming Mixamp Astro Y-Adapter AntLion Modmic Audio Technica ATH-AD700 Open-air Dynamic Audiophile Headphones VIZIO E3D470VX 47-Inch Class Theater 1080p 120Hz 3D LCD HDTV with VIZIO Internet Apps (Black) ^Makes any online first-person shooter more awesome than you thought was possible. The sound quality that the Astro Mixamp paired with the AD700 put out together - like they were made for each other - it is incredible! Because of the lack of bass in the headphones, you hear those footsteps crystal clear. Which is what you want out of a gaming headphone if you play competitively. The AntLion Modmic is very simple to install on to any headphones because it sticks to the headphones. There are video tutorials on YouTube of this. The voice output quality is excellent, too. TIP* If you do go with this setup, or any other gaming setup where a optical cable is in use, remember to change your Sound Settings from HDMI to Digital Optical "Dolby Digital 5.1" Otherwise, you will not be getting the full potential out of your mixamp's Dolby 5.1 processor! PS Tritton AX Pros, Turtle Beach HPX, Astro A40's are trash compared to the Audio Technica AD700's! Sell what you've got and get the AD700.

Anyone try the Skullcandy SLYR? The link up top seems to think it's pretty gosh darn golly gee whiz good for a cheap headset. Well, theyre definitely much better than i thought anything made by Skullcandy would be (though apparently they recently bought out Astro). The problem is, they suffer from the same problem all other "gaming" headsets suffer from: theyre "closed back" headphones. While closed back headphones minimize sound leakage (both incoming and outgoing), they also severely limit the size of the soundstage, in turn hampering your ability to soundwhore. He mentions in the review that this the SLYR's weakest link. If youre just looking for a decent gaming headset that won't break the bank, and soundwhoring isnt that big a deal to you (or waking up your girlfriend sleeping next to you IS), then these seem like a really good choice. But if youre wanting to soundwhore and your mate isnt a very light sleeper, DEFINITELY spend the extra $20 on the AD700's, you wont be sorry. If you already have a console hooked up to a stereo/surround sound tuner (im sure most of us do), then just plug whatever headphones you end up with in the headphone jack. To add chat, hang a bluetooth on your shirt. Its that easy.

No experience myself, but the reviewer I quoted on the previous page seems to like it. Seems like a cool idea, but it wouldn't work for me. Me and my girl split screen about 90% of the time; we use a splitter and run two sets of headphones, and hang a Bluetooth on a string in between us. If you already have a mic then tjust use that and change the chat output to your headphones (not sure if this is an option on the Xbox).

So the AD700 is the best soundwhoring set to use? I'm on Xbox so I can connect it to the A40 Mix Amp. The A40s aren't too comfortable for me after sustained use and I prefer the X41 for long sessions. Unfortunately they go through batteries like anything so I've let a friend borrow it.

The ones I have now have large cups/cans/whatever, but they rest on the ear, not covering it. I guess sound leaks out from them? But, yeah, the significant other is a very light sleeper. Which is why if I had a mic, I'd practically have to be whispering into it. Currently, my PS3 is connected to my computer monitor via HDMI, and then I use the audio-out on the monitor to my desktop speakers and have my headphones plugged into the speakers. That way I can use them for PC and PS3 with minimal (un)plugging when switching between the two. So I'm not sure about tuners and whatnot.
