Seriously? Personally I doubt I'll be affected by this, but this seems like there are better alternatives out there. Why not use this audio recognition system to identify all the copyrighted music in a stream and then ANNOTATE IT WHEN IT PLAYS? It could be like a YouTube annotation with the song artists and title; that's all you need. That would be a win-win for the viewers and streamers right there! It's like Twitch/Google seriously think people want to shuffle through a 5-hour VOD and use that to capture a song for free with key taps, mouse clicks, game audio/music, and other cacophony mixed in to make their own mixtape with. Or maybe Twitch/Google are just out to appease their investors. EDIT: Holy crap; imagine how bad it would be if a VOD gets muted all throughout because the GAME'S MUSIC was identified as illegal copyright material! EDIT EDIT: About the video game music being cut; THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT'S HAPPENING. Also I realize this is an unfinished thought; why not just heavily incentivize against this sort of thing by taking a cut off the Twitch streamer's. You know; give everyone what is theirs? EDIT^3: On second thought that might be worse than what's already in place. Broadcasting a song to a entire crowd would probably result in a buttload of licensing fees being cut; NEVER MIND.

Blanket muting an entire 30 minute vod segment is the dumbest way to handle this in the first place. It's just as bad as Youtube taking ad money for an entire video for a few seconds of content.

EDIT: Holy crap; imagine how bad it would be if a VOD gets muted all throughout because the GAME'S MUSIC was identified as illegal copyright material! You have to consider it from Google's side: streamers are using other people's music, without licensing, and getting paid while doing it. Maybe Twitch wasn't a big enough target for the music industry to go after (or as well known in the big picture of things as Youtube), but Google certainly is. Now that Google owns Twitch (or Youtube owns Twitch, whatever), they're going to protect their investment. That being said, muting a VOD/stream because of game sound is certainly retarded, and I think it can happen on Youtube right now. Not sure if that's a bug or intended feature (for some reason?). EDIT: Looks like it's not possible for game audio to be cleared as "royalty free" until claims are filed on the video per: twitter.com/deliciousbees. Even then it not possible for all audio from a specific game to be cleared since it's a case by case basis.

I guess annotations don't work because they don't give, you know, money to the people that own the rights to the music. Why do people never seem to understand that allowing blatant copyright infringement is a bad thing?

The blanket content ID system for youtube is busted. Why wouldn't it be for twitch?
Here I was hoping that twitch would champion "fair use" from a legal defense to its inevitable codification and legal ratification. Guess it won't be twitch.
The issue is, if the music is part of a game, and that game is played on a stream by internet personalities, then that music has become part of a transformative work (two times removed). It is my opinion that that the latter party should be protected for this newly formed art.

Most high profile streamers have a broadcasting license to allow them to play copyrighted music on stream, however that doesn't offer protection in (and this is in Twitch's ToU already IIRC) recorded VODs. The only thing that even allows vods to exist like this in the first place is a lack of moderation, basically. Broadcasting license? Like who? I would be VERY surprised if the largest streamers had one. Maybe if you mean big companies like Riot Games, Valve for the International, yes I can believe that. Totalbiscuit said that he has licenses for music he plays. But the largest streamers like Trump, the Solo Mid guys, Imaqtpie etc don't have one. They've said it themselves or admitted it indirectly (by no longer playing licensed music). Trump stopped playing music months ago so his vids didn't get strikes on Youtube.

I've never watched Totalbiscuit, but yeah... I'm pretty sure he has a broadcasting license and a radio license.
Trump got jelly of that miracle rouge player's music when he did a restream of him(by permission) to learn how to play the deck.

What's BS is it's far too easy to claim content you don't even own and suddenly lots of people have strikes. I don't even know how many developers have come out and complained about videos of their games getting strikes based on the music they own when they didn't put any sort of claim and even expressly give people permission to use video of their games.
Why is there no middle ground here? This is stupid.

TB did a video yesterday saying he has licensing for the music he plays, it was either on here or on Reddit. Not sure what you mean about Trump, but he stopped with the music sometime last year when Hearthstone was really blowing up. He used to play piano/classical and then took the safe route to avoid issues on Youtube (since he reuploads content from the stream).

What is really stupid is when game show hosts like VGA get written consent from devs to play their games (with the devs themselves in the chat) and a third party claims copyright infringement based on content ID on music that the developers themselves produced. The claimer doesn't even own the music. That is messed up.

Made official.Im fine with this. I certainly trust amazon more than google, and I also think they do a good job of advertising without shoving it in your face. They also have spectacular customer support. Both of my experiences with customer support have been horrible with amazon (having UPS send a package to Texas/not providing promised bonuses when contacted), but they provide a fantastic service with the pro you mentioned.
