I've had troubles sometimes with spotting. I know there is a range to it, but often I am well inside that range and I get nothing.
Sometimes I'll be able to spot multiple enemies with one press, other times I'll be looking at a single enemy with a clear line of sight and I get nothing. Sometimes I can spot enemies hiding in a forest of trees ducking behind a bush, crouched behind logs, and another time there is a guy directly in front of me in the wide open and it won't spot.
Is there anything to explain the quirkiness of the spotting? Why can I sometimes spot 4 and 5 guys with one press, and another time not even spot a single guy in the wide open?

Invisible walls/barriers? Maybe its just glitchy? I definitely would like an answer to this as well.

There's the "Spotting Cone". Beyond the range of the cone, you have to be directly on the guy. I haven't tested much, but an enemy who is mostly concealed or obstructed may not be lit up by the cone - you'd have to be right on him as well. Considering how ridiculous some things get (guided missiles doing an instant 90° turn) when going through brush or tree leaves, things like that with invisible alpha layers and whatnot could also be in the way of spotting.

Aha, very helpful. Makes sense with the cone and how multiple enemies can be lit up at once. Thanks!
