Can someone explain to me how this spec works? When I'm in a tank and use V Smoke, it seems to always remove any tracer darts attached. But when I'm in a chopper ( I only fly BlackHawks) It only works like 1/4 of the time.
I think I've pieced together that you need to pop flares before your enemy shoots a homing missile. But what is the absolute latest you can wait? Now when someone is trying to lock on and you hear the beeping, can you get away with popping flares at that moment? If not, that means you pretty much have to see the tracer hit your vehicle, which is almost impossible for me.
Den, is there anything in the game code that suggests V Smoke only works a fraction of the time? Like a success ratio? Because I swear sometimes I do everything right and still get blown up. Thanks.

Smoke grenades have a "blast radius" just like any other explosive, except the blast doesn't do any damage. The radius is about half the expansion of the smoke itself.
However on a helicopter, if you pop flares/smoke while moving, it's possible that the blast it emits falls behind and the dart isn't within that range. That's the most I can figure of it.
It doesn't matter when you remove the dart, rockets will stop tracking the moment the dart vanishes.

I'm sorry Den, but there's no way that can be correct. I've been using helos every chance I get since the game came out, and I have NEVER been able to evade a rocket if the flare is removed AFTER the rocket has been fired (before the PC has heli flares, I had a friend sit in the rear seat with a smoke launcher).
You point about the flare blast radius is spot on though, it explains those occasional problems.

You need to pop the flare before the lockon is acquired and the rocket is fired. Otherwise it still tracks, at least in my experiences.
Best way to play is to save the flare until you hear and see the warnings. Then as fast as you can pop the flares.

Yeah I tested it and I can stay safe every time now. The problem was that I moved too fast while using smoke, and it would fall behind and not remove the tracer.
