How do assists work? If you did any amount of damage to someone at any time then another killed him do you get an assist?
BTW I am a Xbox 360 CoD4 player.

As far as I am aware, you get assist points based on the % of damage you did.
So if you hit then in the leg with a rifle, you will do 40 damage, then if someone finishes him off you would get 4xp for it in core mode in TDM.
I believe after 5 seconds the person will regen and you would not get the assist points after then, maybe Den can clear this bit up.

That's for World at War. You get assist points based on how much health you took from the guy.
For COD4, you get a static amount of points for an assist regardless of how much you hurt the guy and only if you were the second to last guy to hit the enemy before someone else killed him.
If the guy recovers, then presumably you'd have to hit him again.
