Thought that I had better update Bros on the disaster that has befallen Play4Free. This says it all: What this means in a nutshell is that the so called "Elite" guns that people have previously purchased in microtransactions have been hugely nerfed in the name of "balance". Bear in mind some have paid out upwards of $100 on these guns. This is despite the fact that the same EAsy spokesperson assured us only a few weeks ago that this would not happen: Needless to say, there is a HUGE amount of rage about this; the top post has had almost a quarter of a million views and over 3000 replies since it was posted just 3 days ago. People rightly feel that they have been ripped off, despite what EA's terms of service say. But it is worse than that; the new guns have such high recoil and such poor recovery from recoil that they are impossible to control at anything other than close range. The recovery time is so long that you have to wait a ridiculouly long time before you can loose off a second burst on target. And they have dramatically reduced the ammo count (from 4 x 35 round mags to 4 x 24 for the MP5, the gun I bought). It is possible to "rent" attachments such as a Tactical Stock, Extended mags etc to improve your gun, but the prices are high and even with the best Stock, the recoil is still pretty unmanageable. All in all this makes for an utterly frustrating playing experience, and, as a consequence, I have stopped playing. Gaming is meant to be fun. Perhaps it is time I bought MW3; only £22 for the Wii version in Tescos. edit - bought it but bored after only 8 hours play. Edit 12 Jan 2012 - the official thread on this reached over 750,000 views and 6,000 replies, and then was deleted lol

What I don't get is what people want to do with BF:Play to Win when there's BC2 and BF3?

The one big plus Play4Free had was that it would run on crappy PCs, like my laptop.
I would buy BF3 tomorrow if I thought for a moment that my laptop would run it. But no chance; it can barely run BFBC2, and that is with an unplayable frame rate on the lowest settings.

"These things make the gun more powerful than everything else!" "That's bad! What do we do?" "Let's get rid of them and then just give people guns that are more powerful!" "That makes sense!"

^ that's the crazy logic you get in the wonderful world of B P4F.
Anyway; I'm gone. Program uninstalled. Game over.
Trying out A.V.A. (Alliance of Valiant Arms) and also have downloaded the ARMA play for free version. And I might even put my hands into my pockets and buy MW3 (shock horror).

Why not try TF2? That's no pay-2-win shooter in anyway, and it has pretty nice balance for public play Plus I don't think it's very demanding. Could play it on my other computer that was decending from the stone age

I tried out AVA a while ago. It's pretty standard fare, lots of it is designed very similarly to CounterStrike.
Even the recoil seems close to identical. The camera follows the recoil exactly unlike CSS, but the recoil patterns feel the same. The same heavy up-right climb with the AK and then a hard left-right jerking after a few shots bring it to the recoil ceiling.

Gave AVA a try; played a dozen or so deathmatch type games. Looks nice but I'm not sure it's for me - just pure running and gunning, and maps appear to be very small; chaotic. Maybe I'll stick with it a few days to see if I settle in. Just installed ARMA; going to give that a go (off work till 9th Jan so plenty of time

Oh, since it just opened up, you guys should sign up for the Planetside 2 beta. It'll have super low settings that will surely let even an old and busted laptop run it well. www.planetside2.com

Also, look out for Blacklight: Retribution when it comes out. It looks to be an epic free-to-play, although the graphics might (probably) be too hard on your computer.
In the meantime, TF2 is 100% free. I highly, highly recommend it. And you can also try out the original free BF game, Battlefield Heroes. It still has the annoying microtransaction sh!t, but overall there have been fewer idiot decisions made about the game.

So far I have tried:A.V.A. - works just fine and looks good, but maps tiny. Good fun; pure running and gunning, but I would like a bit more than that from a game. ARMA - looks fascinating, but lame laptop not up to it. Operation 7 - graphics really poor but it does run OK. Not for me though, just don't like the feel of it.

Out in 2003 I believe, so a bit long in the tooth. But I might dip into it just to get a feel for how Planetside 2 might be.

Dedicated AMS driver. Parked at the basement door and armed to the teeth with the mighty... Suppressor SMG!
With the AMS being decommissioned in Planetside 2, I'm getting some wings and am going to be a dedicated Galaxy pilot.

Also came across FireFall; another MMOFPS which looks as if it has great potential: www.firefallthegame.com/homeAccount created; hopefully I'll get the chance to try the Beta. EDIT - not sure whether this is a true MMO in the same way that Planetside is, and it will have microtransactions , although Red 5 do claim that these will not be pay2win style. We'll see.

Update on BF Play4free Well EAsy have finally acknowledged that their actions have caused "an abundant abundant offeedback", after 750,000 views of and 6000+ replies to their official thread. Not holding out much hope though, but we'll see. Edit - my response removed as it would appear that it is open to misinterpretation

Ill second tf2 its over the top insane but its a ton of fun Thanks. I'm in a bit of a transitional period at the moment; I quit battlefield p4f a few weeks ago and tried out a few other free 2 plays, but nothing has struck a chord up to now. I bought MW3 for the Wii as well, more out of a sense of duty to the bros that read my recoil thread than anything else, but I just can't get into it; just seems as if I am going through the motions. On the plus side I have been invited to join the Firefall closed beta, much to my delight and surprise; only problem is, my laptop just not up to the job. New PC on order; should arrive in a week or two. And Planetside 2 may be just around the corner. TF2 may be just what I need right now; I'll give it a try.

Ill second tf2 its over the top insane but its a ton of fun Installed Steam, but, wow, TeamFortress 2 is a 10616MB download; an estimated 11 hours on my connection. Will be less in reality, but still.... I'll have to leave it running overnight or whatever; there will be too much moaning from my kids if I hog the connection for that long during prime time for Youtube/Fifa 2012/Club Penguin!

Perhaps we shall play as bros at some point. I look forward to that. I got a Beta invite 8 days after registering, I think because I got stuck in and started posting on the forum; must have made a good impression somehow because I got a private message asking me if I wanted a Beta Basically you can get a Beta invite in 3 ways: 1/ random selection 2/ getting an invite from an existing beta member; apparently 2 invites have in the past been given to all existing members when the developers want more participants. I would say that this is your best bet if you are really keen 3/ enter one of the many competitions that crop up in the off topic section; basically people from 2 above giving away their spare invites. So that's what I would recommend; just join in discussions on the forum, and maybe enter a competition or 2 (even if you lose, it may get you noticed). Some good threads on the forum and some more light hearted stuff (I just love the fact that a my little pony thread is the most viewed on the forum), but the beta forum (accessible once you get an invite) achieves bro like levels of discussion.
