Now Den I know that you are not playing console where the ping bar actually applies, but I want to know what the different colors mean. Is 4 bar like 200ms ping? How much can anti-lag compensate for?
Any one else please fell free to add your input.

the bars are a representation of only your latency. it does not show anything else about your internet connection.
when it comes to lag, packetloss is king. back in the day a good dial-up connection would run 180-220ms. dial up with 0% packetloss is less laggy to play on than cable running 80-140ms with 5-10% packetloss.
packetloss kills
bandwidth in the 2-4-6-12 player games isn't much of an issue provided nothing else is being done on the network. can't give you a number for console (haven't watched the traffic in long enough to remember) but for a typical game now adays you're looking at needing around 10/kbs of traffic per player in upload capacity.
bandwidth isn't a big deal, packetloss & ping are.
the thing to do would be get the IP of a host with a bar of your choice & ping it during the match. it would give you a general guide.

a tip for lag... NEVER download from a torrent during gaming. or anyone else on your router/modem. It really fuckes it up, because it want to pull every package it can to itself, so somethimes call of duty wont come through... (and that is package loss again I guess )

another big thing with torrents is that when not setup correctly, many routers will bog down as they fill up their tables trying to keep track of the large number of individual connections trying to be made.
you can game with torrents, just gotta keep the bandwidth from being close to maxing your connection, and keep the individual connections to a minimum (try to download from seedboxes)

4bar - upto 100ms 3bar - upto 200ms
Not sure about yellow or red

MW2 searches for servers that are sub 100ms. you can still join games and be 2-3 bar.

I know for a fact that the 100ms matchmaking thing is bullshit!
You guys may not be aware of this, but for us non-american players, its next to impossible to find a green ping game unless its during peak hours, like 6-10pm.
And i know im not the only one aswell, google 'MW2 matchmaking' and there are hundreds of other players with the same problem.
Hell! Just last night there was a fully lobby of australian and new zealand players and, ONE, american kid joined, and he got host!
