Correction, IW created a new engine from scratch for COD4.

Correction, IW created a new engine from scratch for COD4. CoD4 seems so similar to CoD2 in terms of engine. Console commands, seperate exe files for SP and MP, very similar graphics options (with extra stuff), and the ingame engines look very similar. Even loading bars.

It is not a new engine. The core is still the proprietary licensed idTech3 engine they've used since COD1.
After Q3A became open source, IW kicked up the graphics and many other things for COD2, further adding to it with COD4.
Heck, the biggest difference between Quake 3 and COD2 as an engine is that ".pk3" was renamed ".iwd". Both are just ".zip" files with a different extension. ".dds" of COD2 was just renamed ".iwi" in COD4.
IW bought that license for COD1 and have toiled on it all the way up to COD4. It is "their own" but it is built upon Quake 3 as a base.

Woah Quake 3's engine must be awesome. But it's aging. It'll be nice if the upcoming CoD runs on CryEngine 2. I'll be one of the cry babies whining over pathetic framerate then. Heck, I don't thing Crytek is generous enough to share it's engine anyway...

I stand corrected then Den.
Well I love the engine we have at the moment, it plays so smooth. A lot of games lack this and I just ignore them... ie Haze, Farcry.
