i was curious about shotgun ranges, so i did some rough testing. each shotgun has a range beyond which it has 0 effect. it's not about the spread of the pellets becoming too wide to do much damage-- rather, above a certain range the pellets basically vanish from existence.
range in order from highest to lowest:
SPAS-12 Striker AA-12 / M1014 Ranger
i haven't unlocked the model 1887 yet.
further, i tested the silencer on the striker and AA-12 and found that it reduces the range to about 65% of each gun's normal range.

I've used the 1887 a lot (lovely gun) but not the other shotguns a whole lot - I'm thinking it's got the longest range, but it could be behind the SPAS.

The range seems a bit longer than MW1's, at least. Shame they kept this poor system in for the shotguns.

well i can confirm that shooting from the hip is still more accurate then aiming down the sight with the AA-12 w/ grip

i never really used shotguns in cod4 so i never knew exactly what that meant. the spread is tighter when aiming from the hip or what? the RDS and holographic are kind of useless for these weapons?

Range for the SPAS seems to be about 800, like the Trench Gun from COD2.

Yup. Shotguns have a fixed hip-fire spread that doesn't increase while moving or shooting (unlike every other gun), and a fixed ADS spread. The ADS spread is greater than the hip-fire spread on both CoD4 shotguns, and it's greater than the hip-fire spread on most of the WaW shotguns, too (although the ADS spread is actually a touch tighter than the sawed off double barrel hip-fire spread). It's possible that there's a shotgun in MW2 that has such a large spread that aiming down the sights actually reduces it, but I don't think that's the case. You're better off just firing from the hip at all times.

what shotgun has the best LETHAL range with a silencer? and does a silencer affect it much? That is something I really would like to know... If you are on xbox, let me know, you can shotty the heck out of me.

It seems that they at least made the tracer rounds have a tighter spread when ADS.
Except I may be confused with single player.

If it is anything like COD4, then the crosshair turns red at the exact distance where the shotgun blast vanishes. The W1200 was at 500 and the M1014 was at 600.
