One of the joys of Firefall for me is Gliding; takes a bit of a knack to launch and get the best out of the Glider, but uper-cool once you get the hang of it. I'll re-post this Youtube clip of my best glide to date now that we have a separate Firefall sub forum. Here's another: Feel free to add other clips, screenshots or indeed anything about Gliding.

I hope they implement some sort of updrafts. Nothing major, but it would be really cool to be able to glide around and use them like real gliding. They could be randomized or static. They could also be tied to the day/night cycle like real ones which would make gliding more efficient during the day.
I also hope they straiten out the wings... O,o It's REALLY odd watching a glider fly strait with the wings canted off to one side instead of level. I know 99% of people know next to nothing about aviation and aerodynamics but even so everybody knows enough to know airplanes roll their wings into a turn and level them out to fly strait. Flying like that would require a rudder... which you don't have. (And would be a very bad way to fly even if you had.)
When I played the other night I had a real frustration because I had logged out midmission and didn't spawn back at my starter base. Instead I was way south of there with the crashed thumper between me and base. I wanted to glide back NorthEast to my mission, but the glider point wasn't all that high up and had huge hills right in front of it. I could not for the life of me manage to glide for more than about 8 seconds before running out of altitude because it was just such a poor placement of the launchpad with all the crap around the base and my lack of experience didn't help either.
Eventually I just gaveup and walked... which actually got me killed. *lesigh*

Some of the glider pads are in pretty dumb locations, I agree. I found 2 on a big boulder above a beach - utterly pointless.

I also wish their locations were permanently visible. It's annoying wandering around in what you think is the general direction of a pad, but not sure, because it won't show up on the damn map.
In fact that pretty much goes for all the map location icon thingies. If it's a static object that never ever ever moves then why should it vanish from my map just because I've wandered more than 20 meters away?
I wouldn't mind having to discover them in the first place, but it definitely bothers me, because I don't have the map memorized yet... and I shouldn't have to memorize it at all.
Also sometimes when I'm trying to take off my glider decides to immediately nosedive strait into the ground or not even deploy! Yesterday it took me about probably 5 tries to get airborn on more than one occasion. Actually on one occasion I just gave up and walked.
Gliding is fun, though... when it works...

... Gliding is fun, though... when it works... Yeah, you're not alone in having trouble getting launched. The subject of much debate on the Firefall Forum! I think that I have mastered it, but every so often I do an unexpected faceplant. Agree with your comment about the maps, but I suspect that they may fix that.

Kinda wish you could just extend the wings whenever you wanted as well and the launchpads were really nothing more than that. There are some great big cliffs and hills you can get way up high on and I'm left scratching my head as to why I can't glide from them too...
I understand they don't want to go too far with it or they'll turn FireFall into a flying game instead of an FPS, but I still think it would be doable. Hell your glider isn't all that efficient as is. It's not like you could jetpack up and fly across half the map without starting from a really tall vantage point anyway.
It also strikes me as quite odd that we have both powered flight and wings, but they are mutually exclusive. Surely anyone with half a brain on the planet would build a pack that would let you fire off your jetpack while you're gliding. Sure it'd be just a short burst, but it would still be awesome. But, eh... 'tis nowhere near a realistic game anywho. Although I have to say that when I go from playing Tribes to FireFall I feel odd that I'm more restricted rather than less. Though of course that's due purely to the lack of skiing. Buuuuttt.... Why can't gliding become FireFall's answer to Tribes skiing? I say they open it up and see what happens when they let us glide from anywhere. Surely balance issues can be addressed to make it work. The game should really show off gliding as it is one of this games shining successes... Well.... When it works. ;p

I have high hopes that we will be able to manufacture deployable glider packs in the future.

Another long range glide, which included a brush with The Melding.
