So based on a mix of personal experience, raw technical data, and preference, which guns from each category are generally considered the cream of the crop, and why?
For me:
Assault Rifle: SCAR-H- Respectible recoil combined with high damage and great range SMG: MP5K-This is only my favorite because a) the MP5 used to be my favorite gun, and b) I flocked to it early on and never let go LMG: AUG HBAR-Great accuracy, virtually no recoil, and good damage Sniper Rifle: Barrett .50 Caliber- don't like bolt actions, like the slightly bigger clip, and am not a fan of the M21's lack of body damage multipliers besides the head Machine Pistol: TMP- It's a mini-ACR, and the ACR is pretty awesome Handgun: .44 Magnum (Akimbo)- "This gun is the best gun ever!" Shotgun: Model 1887 (Akimbo)- Ludicrously long range, and it's the Terminator shotty Launcher: Stinger- Fire and forget at its best
You are my bro, bro. (I know it doesn't do anything on this part of the boards, but whatever) :3

ACR, SCAR, followed by M4 and AK47 for the assault rifles UMP45 for SMG's AUG for LMG's
M9 for handguns (haven't really used the .44 mag though) G18 and TMP for machine pistols akimbo 1887's for shotguns, followed by spas 12 (or the under-barrel shotgun in 30 health, its got insane range and 1 shot kills at ranges greater than the 1887)

The absolute top tier weapons in aim-assist land are the FAMAS, M16A4, and Akimbo '87. Then again, the Akimbo '87 is just god-like.

There's no such thing as "best". It all depends on preference and the specific map. Each gun has subtle differences that make it better at slightly different ranges... And in each map, there are subtle differences in the most likely range during engagement. Because of this, there is no single gun that's ideal for every map.
On smaller maps, like Skid Row, the Shotguns and SMGs are much better. On larger maps, like Derail, it's best to use one of the burst rifles or a Sniper rifle. The subtle differences make it hard to really be certain what weapon is ideal and it also depends on the types of routes you choose. Using tactical insertions cleverly might also mix things up, such that you can use close-quarters weapons like the shotguns even on some of the larger maps.
The only thing I think we can say is whether one weapon is OVERPOWERED by another, purely because it has better stats.
And I think: -The M4 sucks (SCAR = more damage, about the same recoil, ACR= same damage, less recoil) -The Model 1887 with Akimbo is unquestionably the best shotgun, though the M1014 comes close and Akimbo Rangers can be easier to use on small maps. -The Intervention is also useless, because it does the same damage as the Barrett, but it has more sway and a slower ROF (the Intervention might be best for quick scoping, though, since whenever I see quick scoping, I see people using the Intervention). -The Magnum is better than the Deagle, because it's got less recoil\higher ROF (quicker recovery from recoil I mean)

asault: Tar Tar Tar and mayb the famas to abit. Submachine: really cant control the UMP recoil, but I also dont really perform with any other. have not really tried that hard, see above... LMG: dont really have used those either, gonne check on those next prestige I guess. RPD is pretty nice with grip I guess and AUG I cant really control, but have almost never played with it yet. Barret for sniping (dont have the precision for the WA2000 in MW2 yet....) and the semiauto spray speed of this gun is insane, I think the highest in the game... MP: PP2000 for sure, although the m21 can be nice to...(is there any difference with the famas:P) striker for shotgun for sure (and model offcaurce, but I prestige...) handgun: I really dont know.... not the deagle, didnt like the magnum the 5 times I used it. And cant see any diference between the other 2 pistols (and I cant to get off fast shots like with the barret:P)

Yeah, I'm going to amend my AR answer. The TAR is best for HC and close/medium range in Core, with the ACR still being the best for long range.

ACR- it's like a shark with a laser beam on it's head UMP AUG (debatable) Barrett PP2k OR Raffica depending on what you're looking for USP, b/c it's easier to spray than compensate for recoil 1887 for sure- it's got sniper-like range! Javelin
