All weather abilities only cause weather to last 5 turns. FUCK YOU POLITOED. Tyranitar is still good because he gets +2 sp def on every switch in and still has beautiful stats, but ninetails and politoed will probably go to UU. Which is fine because a specs politoed/ninetales is going to fucking murder things still.

hail is still good cuz megabomasnow can reset by mega evolving late.
Also as far as "fun" goes... this installment is a 10/10. Mix of nostalgia and new stuff hits every note. There are even some funny meme references in the English translation (ITS OVER 9000!!!) and the first cave you enter is called "zubat roost" just in case you thought you were getting away with no zubats wrecking your cave walking experience. Beyond that the new attack, mega transformations, and pokemon animations are all sick. Pangoro gets my kudos for best battle design. Hawlucha gets kudos for best attack design with "Flying Press."
Competition things I've noticed just from playing...
Two new weather types. Both are "EH." One heals. One does electric stuff...
Powerup-Punch is a cool move. 20 damage 100 acc fighting. Always increases attack by one stage. Very useful for finishing and probably useful when your opponent will be switching out. Many pokemon are able to learn this...
The EV training is badass and not too time consuming. Now if they a built-in eugenics ap. lol
Hawlucha is amazing. Great typing IMO. Just fast enough to pose some nice threats. Flying Press demolishes alot of things at the expense of doing nothing to ghost types.
Doublade is going to be an evolite champion. Using him was fun before....
Aegisblade is cheap. King's Shield+Swords Dance+Iron Head+Shadow Sneak will get you everywhere in singles.
MegaEvolution is going to change alot. 175 Attack 150 Speed Alakazam is Ubers territory in VGC. Many will probably be banned in Singles Smogon. Megas I've used: Mega Mawile, Mega Gengar, Mega Absol, Mega Lucario, Mega Mewtwo, Mega Charizard X.
Charizard X was my main story mode guy and used the following OP moveset for mindless sweeping. Power-Up Punch, Flame Charge, Flare Blitz, Dragon Claw. I suppose later he could run some big bad moves for competitive play.

Yeah the biggest thing I noticed about mega evolutions is the bulk a spread of 100 bst gives out and the speed increase... Items more than make up for attack stats given, but you can't have an item give you mewtwo's great (ironically for psychic) offensive and defensive typing of psychic/fighting (I have always had issues in my teams with gallade, he comes in and fucks shit up) or abilities, like tough claws. Also gale wings looks op as fuck, imainge priority hurricanes...Don't know the stats of fletchling's evo but galewings is a stupid ability.

So Alakazam is back to being the most OU Pokemon ever. He can learn that fair type move from the 6th gym's TM, meaning he can now kill Dragons, which was like the only type that he couldn't do shit to before.

Because mousey, hidden power goes off base 60 power now. Basically technician mons can use 90 power hidden powers, which is only relevant to roserade.

also I should mention that mecha-aggron is a defensive monster now w/ pure steel typing and filter.
Fit him into a team with good special coverage. Bulky Rotom-W + ghost type of your choice is going to be his best friend.

uh, you could already do that. Hidden power's base power can vary with IVs kitty. But aph implied that he was going off of existing knowledge. If hidden power ice didnt stop dragons now (and it does, usually) then an 80 BP attack wont do much better. I know you could do that, but like Roserade has no moves that would make technician work specially, so I couldn't be bothered figuring out how the ivs work. I guess offensive roserade would work, but I don't know how the illegalites work with leaf storm sleep powder and technician. I like the change actually though to hidden power, essentially you have to pick pokemon more and more based off of coverage if it's a special attacker, and now fairy types beat dragons, you don't need to have a strong hp ice to keep the game balanced that way.

It's a physical grass move though. I guess if Virizion gets it it'll be decent, but the drought nerf hurt quite a few physical grass users. Grass isn't the greatest attacking or defensive type though, and grass types typically lack coverage options, which is even more apparent in physical grass types not named Virizion/Venusaur. Besides leaf blade is what 80 base power? Not much of an upgrade.
Obviously it'll be a decent doubles move, but what are you going to do, run a terrakion esque beat up on Virizion set?

It is an entry.
Entrys are still removed by spinning.
You also get a new defensive powerhouse/spinner in the form of avalugg. Huge defense. Low Special defense. Pure ice.
Also greninja, the best starter (high speed/SpAtk), gets rapid spin in addition to a huge movepool and a fantastic hidden ability (protean)that eliminates weaknesses.

Here is its known Base Stat spread...
100 HP / 110 Atk / 180 - 185 Def / 45 SpA / 35 - 40 SpD / 25-30 Spe
It gets recover which I think is a pretty good combo with spin. He can also run some offensive sets.
Ice didn't get buffed, but fighting got nerfed slightly by not being very effective against fairy/fairy being super effective against it. Fire and steel got a buff in that area though...

I'll summarize this stuff for ya.
you should totes get familiar with it. There are just so many hugely overwhelming offensive threats, but this gets balanced by most of them being megas of pre-existing pokes with the obvious restriction that you can only use one mega per team. This "I can see that mega coming a mile away" is offset by enough there being enough mega threats at least being useful by themselves without needing their item (so you can keep an opponent guessing). The mega thing is really really cool...in concept. Each team now has a champion... a mini uber. At the same time, this might not turn out so well in practice.
Here is my list of Megas and abilities/big changes/relevant info. Keep in mind that all of them have boosted stats (usually by alot). Assume relevant offense is boosted.
Mega Venusaur - Thick Fat + boosted defenses Mega Charizard X - Dragon/fire + tough claws (increase physical moves by 50%). Charizard gains attack. Mega Charizard Y - Drought Mega Blastoise - Mega Launcher (pulse moves increased by 50%) Mega Alakazam - Trace - Greatly boosted SpAtk/Speed 175/150 Mega Genger - Sahdow Tag - Greatly boosted SpAtk/Speed 170/130 Mega Pinsir - Aerilate (turns used normal moves into flying...thrash) + Bug/Flying Mega Gyrados - Mold Breaker - Water/Dark Mega Aerodactyl - Tough Claws (increase physical moves by 50%) Mega Mewtwo X and Y - Both obv. Ubers material - X is fighting/Psychic Mega Ampharos - Electric/Dragon - Mold breaker Mega Scizor - nothing of note Mega Heracross - Skill Link (lol) - 185 attack stat... Mega Houndoom - Solar Power Mega Tyranitar - nothing of note Mega Blaziken - Speed Boost Mega Gardevoir - Pixalate (turns used normal moves into fairy) - Psychic/Fairy - 175 SpAtk Mega Mawile - Huge Power (biggest huge power user in game at 105) - Steel/Fairy - 50 speed TR attacker Mega Aggron - High Defenses - Pure Steel - Filter (Mr. Mime's version of Rhyperior's solid rock) Mega Medicham - Huge Power (100 attack) - 100 Speed Mega Manectric - Intimidate Mega Absol - Magic Bounce - 150 attack/115 speed Mega Banette - Prankster Mega Garchomp - Sand Force (what) - 170 attack stat - 92 speed Mega Lucario - Adaptability Mega Abomasnow - Snow Warning (snow reset)
I've already mentioned my non-mega offensive picks... Aegislash, Greninja, and Hawlucha. And that is just it... outside of those three I'm not seeing any big non-mega threats.
There are alot more defensive and niche pokes here...as if they were attempting to fill in gaps that previous generatiosn had left... and then we have just really odds pokemon like malamar that evolves when you hold your DS upside down... (it gets superpower and contrary which IS interesting). There are just a ton of type combos here that we haven't seen before.
This generation is the generation of niche pokes and game changing megas.
The fairy type is now sprinkled through pokemon old and new... and I like the choices they made with its strengths/weaknesses.

Whoops... i somehow forgot Mega Kangaskan.
Gets two attacks....no biggy.
Probably the best use for Power-up punch as baby's attack comes after the stat boost. You can also make use of regular form's scrappy to hit ghosts with fakeout and mega-evolve turn 2.

It's a 50% boost to attack on top of any att it gets, and you can do some combo moves with it, or go for boosting moves and an attack, or even double fake out in doubles. Not bad tbh.

Not bad tbh. yeah if it survives to turn 2-3 it can get really scary. I can even see MEgakangaskaschachuan sitting in the back in VGC and firing off a scarfed double STAB retaliate 140+70 to eat through any non ghost. If you are firing at a ghost then it probably doesn't have enough defense to fend off a scrappy base 140 retaliate in the first place... I used Kangamanga in my final VGC team and he was awesome in almost every game I played him in, since he was specially designed to trip up the double ghost open/teams with a good amount of fighting types (he had chopple+defense+counter. It will be nice to see him able to put some huge damage in this time. It also has access crush claw which might end up being a better short-term choice than Power-up punch.

I wonder how protect works... Like can you eke some damage out from behind a protect? Could you protect AND feint? Could you double protect on the second turn to have a heightened chance of taking no damage on the 2nd turn of protect?
Also steel types are STILL really cool guys after the nerf... 8 resistances? It'd be silly if it wasn't for the fact that you can hit them with 3 very good offensive types, ground fighting and fire for SE damage.

If you are talking about megakangaroo strategy...The little guy must use the move its mother used. I'm not sure of how it works with effects like biteflinch or body slam paralysis...but the screen says "hit 2 times" for single attacking moves.
On the subject of protect... mat block, spikey shield, and kings shield are pretty neat, but come with the downsides of being not only predictable, but weak to status/stat lowering moves. Makes me think protect might be better than kings shield on Aegislash...though kings shield is such an amazing combo with swords dance.
Btw as of 9PM tonight I got all possible X exclusive and 8-9 PM scavenger hunt mega stones in one fell swoop. Feelin' pretty giddy about that tbh.

a few things to note.
The megas are totally going to end up being compared to each other rather than non-megas.
You can have two mega stones present within the same team and CHOOSE which stone you want to activate in battle (you can only choose one per battle). For instance...for the Battle Masion (the new battle subway/tower) I'm using a charizard and gengar w/ their stones with Aegislash as my lead. Btw... Gengar animations are the best I've seen yet. The guy is legitimately terrifying when he comes out. Also... he gets dazzling gleam to wreck dark/dragon/fighting. I currently have him w/ shadow ball, sludge bomb (yay poison buff), thunderbolt, and dazzling gleam
In slightly different news...some abilities are getting changed and/or removed from certain pokemon. One of the harshest examples that I mostly agree with is Chandelure losing (did he ever have it?) shadow tag as an ability and gaining infiltrator. However, the plus side for chandelure lovers is infiltrator BYPASSES substitute. Whaaaaaaaaa.

Still a buff, considering how fairy now has really nice typing meaning they can be counter aggressive to common aggressive pokemon, fighting/dragon/dark. I'd consider dark slightly less aggressive, even though dark types don't usually carry much in the way of defenses.
