One day, I was frustrated with the fact that if I'm climbing up something, I can't really do anything to defend myself. Given that my first instinct when being shot at is to jump to the side while returning fire, it affects me a lot. That time is basically useless since you can't even switch or reload your gun during it. So I tried to throw my knife while I was climbing in the middle of a match, just to test. Presto. The knife is thrown. A few more mid-match tests yielded that equipment overtakes everything except dying. Even the annoying "Durr-hurr-hurr, i iz plantin a bawmb" animation is cancelled simply by throwing something. This lead to several ideas about how to speed up my gameplay.
You can automatically return to default stance in an instant. (with your weapon at your hip or your Riot Shieldin front of you nevermind, Riot Shields are almost never directly in front of you. >_>) You can do this by pressing (on the 360) RB followed immediately by Y to put the equipment away. I call this "Shoulder cancelling" because the cancel itself happens when I press the right shoulder-button of my controller. This is somewhat useful, as it...
- is faster at cancelling reloads and sprints
- cancels any animation dealing with a S&D bomb. Useful if anyone catches you with your pants down, salivating at all that hot, sexy improvised explosive as your trembling hand clumsily taps two buttons in non-rapid succession. Or at least, that's why I figure planting and defusing the bomb takes that long. >_>
- Cuts short the Melee animation for your regular knife and Riot Shield. Tactical Knives, bah, humbug. It's nice for when there are enemies around and you just shanked a guy or getting two fast, successive rams.
- RB+Y+Y seems to be a faster switcher for the more cumbersome weapons. Riot Shields disappear fromin front of the far side of you, so the Javelin for your favorite most disgusting glitch can be brought out that much quicker. Switching from an SMG to a Magnum, though... I don't think so.
- With a Riot Shield, you can effectively auto-aim the Throwing Knife. Meleeing places your enemy in the center of your screen. With a Riot Shield, you areprotected from less exposed to bullets until you can get close enough to Melee. Just use the melee, but before the melee hits, throw the knife. Unless your target is running laterally across the screen, you're good to go. Instant kill.
-An alternative to this if you (for some reason) want Riot Shield kills is to melee, cancel back to default, then melee again. With Commando, there isn't really much escape from this.
This technique might not be all that useful, but as a very technical player, (coming from Super Smash Bros. Melee and Gunz: The Duel) I think it's worth sharing. If it's not... don't hate me. >_>
Suggest more applications, pl0x.
