Still not as heinous as scrapping Generals 2 into a generic pay-to-win game. >:C

Unless these micro-transactions are for aesthetics, or extra loadout options that are as powerful as the other options in multiplayer it's alright with me. I believe Dead Space 3 is a prime example of EA messing up their MT system; the survival horror aspect is diluted when you can just throw down a few bucks to get better weapon parts. There's technically nothing wrong with triple dipping a game by having people buy the game, having DLC, and then piling on a MT system or a subscription service on top of that since the latter three are optional. I can't put my finger on why this is so, but I'm often reluctant to buy a game with a business model like that.

On one hand, I think these nickle and diming tactics are a big fuck you to consumers.
On the other hand, you gotta applaud them since you just know people will buy stuff anyway.

I'm not too sure how accurate these numbers are, but according to Steve and Larson " the top 10 most pirated games overall as of August 8 2012 are: 1 Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 4 Battlefield 3 5 Crysis 2 6 Mafia 2 7 FIFA 12 8 Mass Effect 2 9 Portal 2 10 Sims 3 EA published half the games on this list, and Activision holds the first 3 spots. I'm not sure what to make of that.

the piracy numbers are usually pure bullshit.
the prime example was the guys who made the witcher 2, who claimed that for every legit copy they sold there would be 3 pirated copies.
turns out, when companies report piracy statistics, they count every connection as a pirated copy. everyone that knows half a thing about p2p filesharing knows that this is completely absurd and the number of actually downloaded games is much, MUCH lower.

Even if those numbers are severely inflated, it still gives us a general idea that games with more aggressive business models behind them tend to be pirated more. In this case, EA and Activision have left this giant hole for budgeted and skeptical gamers alike who find it more convenient to pirate a game than throw down 60 bucks. If the publishers really want to crack down on piracy, any security measure they take will just stall the pirates for a short while. To stop piracy they have to provide a better service than the guys who are offering their game for free, and F2P seems to be the only counter to that. Apparently Crysis is going F2P next game around www.pcgamer.com/2012/11/12/next-crysis-4-crytek-free-to-play/. And considering EA's track record for making F2P games, I got a bad feeling about this.

Crytek is not owned by EA. They only use the EA Partners program.

microtransactions are evil genius.
and I hate them.
Take a game you love. Add a whole bunch of customizable play. Make sure that you need to keep getting new stuff in order to win. Add an in game money making system. Make that money making system slow. Add a way to speed up the system/ buy specifc items with real money. Profit.

Imagine this with CoD
no ammo? 5 cents for another clip/mag/whatever LMG? 5 cents for an instant reload Spawn timer at 10 seconds? Spawn now for for 10 cents Want an extra CaC point? 5 dollars a month Unlock juggernaut perk for 5 dollars a month
You know people would do it. Especially those last 2.

Alright...I'm going to dust off my tin foil hat for this post. This actually got me thinking.
Haven't, at least on the Treyarch side of things, the latest CaC bits seemed a bit like microtransactions? Codpoints for black ops 1 and the unlock system for BO2 resemble many microtranaction setups. Just ad an option to purchase CoDpoints, decrease the amount of codpoints earned per game, and limit the possible amount of points gained per day and you have a functioning microtransaction system. The same could have been done with BO2 with the limited unlock shenanigans they pulled. Then of course they have a DLC "bonus gun"
Could they slowly be moving toward a microtransaction system?

and as the icing on the cake, Cliff Bleszinski just said: Microtransaction is Not a Dirty Word, EA is Not The Bad Guy. just gonna copypaste that here.
Cliff Bleszinski is tired of EA being seen as "the bad guy," while Valve can "do no wrong." "It blows my mind that ... when Valve charges 100$ for an engagement ring in Team Fortress 2 it's somehow cool, yet when EA wants to sell something similar it's seen as evil."
while i agree that the valve fanboyism / EA hate that is very widespread is completely retarded, i still think this guy is full of shit. microtransactions are still a ripoff, ea is still the bad guy. they just aren't as good in brainwashing fanboys as valve is.

I'm sorry, but the engagement ring is purely cosmetic and unnecessary, it literally does no harm to me if they want to charge 1 billion$, it's no biggie. What EA does is complete BS and they have earned their bad reputation legitimately by pooping on us the customers in so many ways... Cliffy B's full of it.

I only watch one livestream, Video Games Awesome
One time someone bought one of the hosts an engagement ring on TF2... I suppose for a tiny itty bitty minority of people that actually has alot of meaning.
Months later, one of the hosts helped a member of their minecraft server propose via minecraft book...
So, I guess there is a legitimate market for videogame themed wedding stuff.

I find it interesting how Valve was able to revive a 4-year-old game's multiplayer population by simply making it F2P. According to Gabe Newell their revenues from the game tripled and their fanbase multiplied ten-fold in doing this. Looking at this, I wonder if that could happen if CoD:WaW went F2P. It's a WW2-era shooter, so unless 3ARC/IW wants to return to that era in a future CoD it's not really competing with their other titles in the series. Why not go for it?

Probably because by being cod, it would compete with their own future titles So... CoD3 then?

to be fair, technically microtransactions were already features in battlefield 3 via the shortcuts. if it would be something just like that and all the unlocks remain as easily unlockable without paying for them i could live with it.
but let's face it, there'll be probably $-exclusive superguns like in bf p4f and/or all the unlocks will be incredibly grindy to unlock.

I don't actually mind the "time saving" style MTs. In ME3 for example, you can pay 4 bucks to have the in game currency it would take you an hour to earn, but the DLC is free. For the people that actually enjoy playing the game enough to spend a few hours doing so, this is cheaper. For the filthy casuals that have more money than time, they can throw a few bucks at it and unlock some things. Properly balanced, it works out. As long as the games themselves aren't designed around it (excessive grinding that can only be made bearable by paying), I'm fine with MTs as an alternative to paying up front for DLC, etc.
