What are the mechanics of appearing on the minimap when unsuppressed? Is there a max range, is it affected by weapon type, how long does it last?
Sometimes I see nachos that appear for a second or two, other times they last longer, which is probably because they've been team spotted.
There's been some times when I'm under sniper fire and I'm not sure of the location of the sniper, and in CoD I could press start and see his red dot.
I'm a new player to this series but I'm considering hanging up the CoD hat and going all in on BF3

Whenever you fire with an unsilenced gun, you pop up on the minimap. Regardless of range.
Whenever you're spotted, you pop up on the minimap and get a dorito above your head if you're in line of sight (3d spot)
Third one is more interesting since I haven't really figured this one out. If a guy aims at you for a long enough time without spotting, you pop on the minimap anyway (and get a dorito). I don't know if you pop up for every enemy, though
I assume you're not a pc player? Otherwise you could expand your map with M or change scaling with N

PS3, thanks for the info. As long as a player on my team has a Dorito guy in his line of sight, he will stay on the minimap for the whole team? Is this why sometimes tanks and vehicles disappear from the map, even though I'm right on the other side of a wall?

Vehicles when spotted show a dorito (they show the vehicles icon, but for the sake of continuity) don't follow the same rule as infrantry; if they're spotted, they will show up regardless if you have a line of sight or not.
I don't know if you can "unspot" if you're still in the line of sight of the guy seeing you, if that's what you mean. It shouldn't really matter anyway, in probably no scenario a guy will stare you down for 10+ seconds without shooting you (or at least try)
