I'm in the market for a new PC and it's been quite a while. I'll do my research like I always do, but I don't have as much time for it as I used to so I thought I'd ask for advice first on what's good, ect.
I'm probably going to build my own so I get exactly the parts I want and none I don't. For example I have a hand me down video card I'll use for now. It's not top of the line for today's standards but far better than what I'm currently running and I can get a new video card later.
This will mostly be for gaming, but also graphics editing, spreadsheets & databases, maybe even some video capture and editing if I get around to playing with that. We'll see...
And I'm not looking to spend $10,000, though I have a comfortable budget for the first time so I am hoping to get some good stuff. Anyway just throwing it out there if peeps have some suggestions on hardware that would be a good value but also probably hold me over for hopefully several years.
Thank you, -mannon

Without posting what your budget actually is, it isn't possible to make good recommendations.

I haven't actually decided, yet. And I wasn't really looking for bros to just do all the work for me and put together the full list of items. I'm more just wondering what everybody thinks is good right now and go from there. But for sake of argument let's say... I dunno $500 to about $1000 or so, not including video card, monitor, keyboard or mouse as I'll use what I have and/or get something separately.

Thanks Den, and SheWolf. Very nice. I'd forgotten about that thing. I see it's not super inclusive, (almost no high end AMD CPUs for exampl) but it offers a great range of good gear to pick from and/or compare against. I think I'll start here and research each component compared to this.
As for assembling it I'm sure I can handle it. It's been a few years since I have assembled a computer from scratch, but I have done it and always do my own upgrades. Though any tips on newer developments would be welcome as it's been a while.
Personally I like assembling computer. It's configuring them that I hate. All those poorly documented settings that mostly have either no obvious effect or their effects are basically your computer works... or doesn't. It doesn't help that I want my cake and eat it too. I want it fast, reliable, and versatile... without having to be an engineer and computer programmer.
My time is a bit limited, though and I'd like to get it up and going soon once purchased so I may go for a barebones if I find one I like. That would save me a little time at least, and hopefully everything would be configured so I wouldn't have to dick with the BIOS too much.
Is there anything considered essential for a good gaming rig? For example, how big of an SSD do I really need if all I'm really putting on there is Windows? (I'll lookup install sizes, ect. I'll do my own research, but any advice is welcome.)
Wonder if I'll be forced to get Windows 8... I'd rather get stuck with an XBone than that. ;3

You would want a ~120 GB SSD.
Windows 8 is fine. Just download a start button and its just a better version of 7.

the lack of the AMD cpu's is explained by the intels offering the better bang for the buck in those categories, the guide goes strictly by cost/gain in tiers. as for ssd's, they are useful but you can totally do fine without. i saved up the money for one and got a nice gpu instead, everything works just fine without one too. though they are useful, you'll get a bit quicker loading times. not much else though.
windows 8 or 7 doesn't really matter as of now, take whatever you can get cheaper and what you like.

That is surprising. Last time I was in the market AMD CPU's clearly outperformed similarly clocked Intel chips and were cheaper to boot. Of course the Intel fanboys claimed AMD chips would melt your computer, but I've never had any problems with them, even when I did overclock.
It looks like I can afford a 120GB SSD so I might as well start off with it rather than try to add it later. I have a video card that I'll use for now so putting the money there instead isn't really a priority. I could get more RAM, but 8 should be fine. Not much reason to go over that. Or I could get a bigger HDD, but I don't think I need it. I've already got my Steam install on an external drive and I should be able to just transfer that over without re-installing all my games. Plus it should get a speed boost going from USB 2 to 3. I'm sure that still going to be slow compared to the internal, but any games that really need it can be moved individually to it and I'll prolly get a bigger & better external in a year or two.
Hmm... Mebbe I should get another SSD for my current computer and put my Minecraft server on it. mwahahaha! Then again I have no idea how much space I need for it. Those MC worlds can get pretty big if you actually explore enough chunks. Luckily there's really only a couple people that play on it. (Is not public.)
I guess I can give Windows 8 a chance if it's not as horrible as everybody said it was when it came out.
This is all a bit daunting, but fun. ;3

yeah, brand loyalty doesn't pay and fanboyism is dumb. sometimes AMD has the lead, sometimes intel has the better deal. just get what's ahead at the time when you buy it. and yes, 8gb is perfectly fine. anything game related you will not have to worry about ram with 8. anything more is a waste unless you do video editing or rendering or some other shenanigans that need lots of ram.
