Footage from the Mod:
A "friendly" encounter from the Standalone game, believe it or not!
I am really enjoying DayZ (Standalone/full game) alot. Like the mod, there is a initial frustration period setting up the controls, and learning the basics without any ingame tutorial, but once you get past the first few hours/day, it is incredibly fun, especially with friends. Panicws(here from the forums) and I play with alot of other RL friends. About 10 people total, with 1-6 people on at any given time. Send me a forum message here and I'll send you my Steam name to come join us.
Tips:
You WILL die. You will die from players, ladders, bugs. You WILL lose your loot eventually. Don't take it personally. Live in the moment. Learn the map and game mechanics. Be better prepared then everyone you run across.
Tear up your shirt for bandages.
Do not eat ANY rotten fruit. Damaged canned food is fine, and does you no harm(currently).
Fireaxe kills zombies and players in 1-hit. Wood-splitting axe takes two hits. All else takes @6+ hits.
Eat and drink TONS until you get message you are full. Hydration and food levels are separate from each other, but they both display similar messages. Don't over-eat/drink. After around (4hours?) you will get a Healthy message on your character profile, meaning you are regenerating blood. There is no need to carry spare food unless you are full. Don't ration it out.
Currently swamp-water, ponds and creeks are 100% safe to drink from, including swamp near the ocean. I expect that to change, but there will be water-purification pills for that when the time comes. Water-wells in most towns are safe(other than for the rare enemy player).
If you eat and drink alot, you can sprint essentially unlimited distances, with the only penalty being that you get hungry/thirsty *slightly* faster, you make hard-breathing sounds, and your cross-hair sometimes takes some time to recover.
You can use many different bladed items on unopened canned-food to open cans. The better the bladed item, the less food lost when opening it. I.E. Can-opened gives you 100% food in can. Axe gives you @65% food in can.
Blood = health. It is a undisplayed number. The lower your blood, your screen starts going grayscale, and the odds of getting crippled/unconscious by zombies goes up.
If your character is moaning alot, you likely have one of two things happening: fractured bone(but not broken). Use bandage in wood stick to make splint.
M4 is fairly inaccurate. Mosin is alot more accurate, but don't miss that first shot.
Use this map: dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus
Use this map within your Steam-overlay Web-browser. Some loot spots were imported from the Mod, and don't actually spawn anything, but largely the map and loot-spots are accurate. You can also click two spots on the map and get a distance-measurement.
Barns and hunter-stands don't spawn anything. Shotgun ammo ingame has no current use.
Some food makes you thirsty faster: Rice, powdered milk, and maybe cereal.
Military bases are big hotspots. But once you get over the fact that the M4 is not as accurate as you might like, the Mosin spawns alot in spots away from military bases. I consider the Mosin to be a high-level loot item, but it clearly spawns in town-buildings that are not displayed as high-level weapon spawns on the above map.
Ditch the flashlight. Turn your gamma up at night. Using flashlights will get you killed by players.
Find First-Person-only servers, if you like FPV best. FP:OFF is the description on server-browser. There are some without label but at FPV-only. FPV-oly servers leads to alot less peeking-exploitation around corners and over walls. If you like doing that in TPV, it will be done to you also.
Ladders will kill you at some point. If you fall off a very short ladder, you will fracture or break your legs. Carry wood sticks and bandages to make a splint, for ladders alone.
Tall buildings can be killer if you have lag. You will move, the server will lag, and you will appear on the other side of the wall, falling to your death. It does not happen often, but stay away from looting tall buildings on laggy servers.
You don't have to hit your "Raise Weapon" button to be at the ready to aim-down-site.
Binding buttons for Zoom-in and also Zeroing scopes up and down are helpful one you get used to the game.
Binding a button to "Look Around" is also very helpful to let you scan behind you as you run across the countryside, to catch people following you, with less ability for them to judge your body-language that you saw them following.
In military bases, go prone and look under beds for weapons you would otherwise not see.
Double-click loot to transfer it faster.
Roll your mouse-wheel(default controls) to get menu options you might not otherwise knwo about, when interacting with your people, or the gun in your hand.
Right-click items in your inventory to get extra options to interact with them.
^Related: Deploy bipod when pron with Mosin for better accuracy, but undeploy it when shooting in any other position or else it gives you a accuracy penalty.
Carry only a few magazines, and empty magazines that you find to keep the ammo but ditch the magazine.
Know that everytime you drop an item on the ground, you are leaving a trail of evidence that you have been in the area. I can't tell you the number of times my awareness incressed when seeing player-dropped loot on ground. And I end up catching that person by surprise.
Drop unwanted good loot out in the forest, so others can't pick it up and use it.
When traveling with friends, play smart, come up with plans, cut the chatter in dangerous areas, and UPDATE FRIENDS AS TO THE HELMET-COLOR, BACKPACK-COLOR, AND WEAPON IN YOUR HAND. Strangers can easily be run into, and if you don't immediately identify them as friend, someone is going to die.
Clouds move almost dead-East. The Sun is usually to the Southwest(mostly south). Only a few servers I have been on have been different.
DON'T TRUST ANYONE except your friends on voice-chat. That being said, there are good interactions that lead to people saying hello, and then leaving in a friendly manner. Assume that stranger has a friend or two of his nearby.
I will post more tips when I get time. Post your tips also!
