(Note: this is a re-post. I posted this sometime last week in a thread, but now have trouble locating it. I am promoting it to thread level to make it easier to find). The key here is to take advantage of Xur's telemetry as much as possible. For those who don't know: Xur offers 5 telemetry for 1 strange coin, and it is extremely good for leveling up your legendary/exotic weapons. Below are the detailed steps: Step 0: buy a pack of telemetry from Xur for the weapon class you want to upgrade. For each telemetry in the pack: 1) Accumulate 5 completed bounties in your slots, ideally all worth 5000 XPs; 2) Play daily at level 28 until you get the final boss to the last slimmer of health; 3) Equip the weapon(s) that you want to upgrade; 4) Activate telemetry, this will start a 30 minutes count down; 5) Finish the daily mission for the 7500 XP; 6) Get your ass back to the tower ASAP ; 7) Run to the bounty guy, turn in all of your completed bounties for 5000 * 5 = 25000 XP; 8) Pick up as many easy bounties as possible that you can complete before the timer expires; 9) Go to the wild and complete bounties. Make sure to give yourself enough time to come back to the tower; 10) Turn in these bounties; Wash, rince & repeat...

Just a heads up that steps 4 and 5 may not actually do anything. There was a discussion on reddit that basically concluded that the daily mission XP only counts towards armor and not for weapons for some reason. I can't confirm that one way or the other, just passing it on. Sounds like (another) bug to me.

Start a weapon from scratch and see how much the meter moves, cross compare that with 5000 XP bounty turn in.

That's pretty much what they did IIRC. Before killing the last enemy they switched to a weapon that only needed a tiny sliver to level up, way less than the XP you'd get from the mission, and it didn't move at all.

2 notes:
1) Heb and confirmed yesterday that Daily XPs don't apply to weapon upgrades;
2) Dumien gave us a great tip on weapon upgrades, by taking advantage of the 5000 XPs rewarded as part of the first gold public event finish of the day. Let each character hold the weapons you want to upgrade when picking up that package, and you will be able push 15000 XPs down the upgrade path each day (more if you have telemetry)

They don't go anywhere if you don't pick them up. So if you don't need the XP or upgrade materials at the moment, just let them pile up and then grab them all at once later when you want to level a weapon or armor piece quickly. Better yet, make sure you have 5 bounties to turn in as well, pop a weapon telemetry thing, then pick up all your packages and turn in all your bounties, grab whatever bounties are still available, and complete them quickly to maximize your XP gain. Only thing I'm not sure about it what the postmaster's item limit is. I haven't seen that anywhere, but I'm guessing it's at least 5, and probably 20 like the vault.

It groups them separately. The public event rewards are under "Messages", along with the packages for reaching a new faction level, and those additional bounties you get from the postmaster. Things you didn't pick up go under "Lost Items". One of my characters has 17 Lost Items, and all of my characters have either 6 or 7 Messages.
I knew that those packages gave you XP, but didn't realize it was 5,000 XP. Does Telemetry increase that?

I have been trying to level up my Thunderlord exotic machine gun for like forever. It just goes so slow. I'm doing all the above tricks, even having three characters all use the same gun. I am still not even to the last leveling stage.

Absolutely... I've been dropping bounties for easier ones all the time... now, load em up and now I can level up guns (and sunslinger) with ease!

The only real difference now is that I can save bounties across days I didn't have time to finish and I don't have to drop them for new/ better ones. And... I'm not limited anymore by the fact that I have three open exotic bounties on a single character.

You can also save up more of them, then pop a telemetry before turning in, so you get more bang for your buck.
