Scattered through several threads, one main theme of our recent discussions on this forum is about the investment system and grinding. Looks like we are all taking tolls to varied degree from playing Destiny, so it is to the best interest of our mental hygiene as well as sleep quality to talk about this topic . Note that this discussion is not Destiny specific, although Destiny is a great case study. To start things off, I would like to talk about different levels of grindiness, regarding activity vs. rewards. Level 0: play the activity just for the sake of playing, no additional incentives required to engage the activity; Level 1: enjoy the activity, and look for excuses (in terms of rewards) to play it; Level 2: the activity is OKish, fine to play for the rewards; Level 3: the activity is boring but relatively quick to complete, play it mainly for the rewards; Level 4: not enjoy the activity and it takes a long time to complete, only reason for doing it is because of the rewards; Note that one possibility is not listed: the activity is not very fun and there is no good rewards. Neeless to day that shouldn't even be part of this discussion. The goal everybody should strive to achieve, is to spend 75%+ of your time on level 0 and/or 1, 90%+ of your time on level <=2, < 10% on level 3, and never on 4 . If a game does not do that for you any more, it's probably time to move on.If everybody agrees, I would like to call this the "Witty Test"

Each bro will have his own "Witty Test" matrix. Mine looks like this: Activity | Rewards | Level of Grindiness | Halo MP | Ranks | 0 | Titanfall MP | Progression, ranked play | 0 | AW MP | Progression, camos, etc | 1ish | Destiny raid with friends | lots of great loot drops | 0 | Destiny raid LFG | lots of great loot drops
| 1 | Solo CsE | good loot drops | 2 | Nightfall with friends | "Unknown" rewards | 1 | Weekly | 9 coins etc. | 2 | Daily | AM etc. | 3 | Bounties | XPs, weapon/armor upgrades | 3 | Crucible (mainly Iron Banner) | OKish weapons | 1 | Eris Quest Line & Bounties | Reach Eris rank 3 | 2 | Destination Material farming | materials for upgrade | 4 | Glimmer farming | glimmers | 3 |

That might be a bit to harsh Witty. If that was a strict test, I would have already quit Destiny. I am pushing my speedometer until into the Level 2, 3 and sometimes Level 4 quite a bit lately. But I do so in the hope things will get better. Sometimes you have to think that way.
Take the clan wars last year. There was every reason to pack it up after the issues that happened last April. It was Level 5 territory, or even LEVEL TEN. But we hung around, stuck around, regrouped and ended up doing something very few video game players ever get to experience....we got to compete in the world championships of a video game, a CoD game. And win our bracket no less, finishing top 20 in the world. It's just a silly video game, but still something that will always be there.
Sometimes you got to endure a bit, to get to the good stuff.

The clan war incident is semantically different from investment grinding. In that case, the problem is human behavior and rehash can yield different result. Investment driven grinding on the other hand will make you hate more and more of the game, if you spend most of you time grinding level 3 and 4 activities. "Moving on" does not mean to completely abandon the game though, it can mean: 1) Take a break and come back later only when things improve and/or there are new activities worthy of level 0 and 1; 2) Dramatically reduce the play time on the game, only do the part that's interesting; (e.g.: In AW case: only play Clan War, in Destiny case: only do raid) As I demonstrated with my "tale of the astronaut", one good thing about Destiny is that you can take a long break and not having to fear to be left behind, too much. Same thing can't be said for games like Borderlands.

Speaking of which....Day 2 Clan War scoreboard results below. If you or anyone else can help make a push tonight, earlier the better, we might be able to finish this dumb six day war in under two days, get it done tonight. No organization from any of the other clans (yet). And with another cap or two, our hold point bonuses per hour will be higher than what they can cap. Then I can have time to raid tonight or tomorrow. This clan war has all the makings of yet another high-octane barn burning thriller!!!

Can't really bring myself to care about AW right now. Maybe once I hit level 31... but really my priorities are more like Destiny > GTAV > Netflix > AW. ;p

Wow: it is exciting to finally see another clan appear on the board with > 0 CP Looks like most likely we won't be having a full raid party tonight. Post said he "played too much Destiny" this week and can't commit, Mal can't do raid, and you are busy with Clan War. The ability to solo 2 stages of the raid also don't help the situation So yes, most likely I will be able to help with CW. The earliest I can start is 5:30pm PT.

We may only need like thirty to forty-five minutes worth of effort. Like some groups winning just two games of Hardpoint. Two games. That's it and like (if we win), maybe as short as twenty minutes? A few people each doing a little bit of work, and it ends up saving a ton of time later. Sorry for wrecking the thread. Please continue.

Polo's Chart (I tried to quote the table, but the code broke my eyes)
Activity Rewards Level of Grindiness
Halo MP Ranks n/a... Bungie didnt'/doesn't want my money Titanfall MP Progression, ranked play n/a... see above... it's like my money is coated in leprosy AW MP Progression, camos, etc n/a... didn't buy it Destiny raid with friends lots of great loot drops n/a... haven't done it... don't have the PS4 friends to do it Destiny raid LFG lots of great loot drops n/a... but gonna try soon (hopefully with Mannon and his bro) Solo CsE good loot drops n/a... hit 30 last night... cheese chest time!!!!!! Nightfall with friends "Unknown" rewards n/a... not good enough to Weekly 9 coins etc. 1... now that I upgraded my weapons, it's actually fun Daily AM etc. 1... depends on what it is, but I like it Bounties XPs, weapon/armor upgrades 0... my bread n buddah n honey Crucible (mainly Iron Banner) OKish weapons n/a... still deciding if Bad Juju is worth doing it Eris Quest Line & Bounties Reach Eris rank 3 2... a pain until I realized what I was working too hard to accomplish too little Destination Material farming materials for upgrade 3... a pain because of the unpredictability, but it's fun... the key is to not just mat farm, but to farm a lot at the same time (glimmer, rank, bounties, and mats) Glimmer farming glimmers 0... honestly... I hit the glimmer cap so often, I'm delibrately buying the same shaders to get rid of $$$.. no clue how people are running out of them... hit the patrols hard, get every bonbon you can, break it down... do the vanguard bounties... made zat money, honey! don't glimmer farm.. farm everything as well as glimmers

Glimmer ran out very fast if you are constantly upgrading weapons / armors, and Xur is now robbing mw with his exotic "upgrades". After this morning's Xur purchase I am now completely broken, with only 1000 glimmer left and see my glimmer consumable reserve drop down to 35 (= 7000 glimmers).
I now have a scarily long list of upgrades to work on and I still want to buy at least 1 weapon from IB. Farming is inevitable.
