news.xbox.com/2015/11/09/introducing-your-first-104-xbox-one-backward-compatibility-games/No time were given, but since they announced it, I expect it to be within 3 months. I never played BLOPS 1, maybe time to get it if the online population on XONE is decent. BTW, Out of the 104 games to be launched on 11/12, the ones worth noting: Borderlands Doom I, II Fallout 3 Gears of War 1, 2, 3, Judgement Mass effect Tom Clancy's RainbowSix Vegas 1, 2 Wolfenstein 3D

On the PS4 front, Sony has made it clear that they don't plan to support Backward Compatibility. But who knows, maybe they will change their mind if XONE's backward compat feature turns out to be a great success.

Decent population on PS3, should be at least that on Bone60. Some hacked lobbies though...

you can still get pre-owned copies for less than that, check Amazon and ebay. I bought it for $6 on Amazon about 2 years ago.

Steam has sales on it sometimes, I think I got mine for like $5.
MW2 for XBone, please.

Even better than ebay or amazon, try craiglist. Someone always looking for cold hard drug money in exchange for COD games on craigslist.

Kind of annoyed that most of my 360 games are on disk, so I'd have to pop those in to play any back-compat games. I have gone full-digital with my X1, never have to get off my fat ass to change a disk, and it's damn nice.

On the PS4 front, Sony has made it clear that they don't plan to support Backward Compatibility. But who knows, maybe they will change their mind if XONE's backward compat feature turns out to be a great success. It's impossible to emulate the cell processor on current x86-64 hardware. They can't do backwards compatibility for PS3 games.

I was under the impression that XONE had the same problem, but I could be wrong because I never care enough to actually look into it.

I don't know if it's completely impossible. It may very well be, I don't know if anyone here is really qualified to definitively comment on it. From a raw performance standpoint it doesn't seem like Xbox 360 vs PS3 is any more difficult to emulate. Similar clock speeds, similar number of cores. PS3 supposedly had some esoteric ways of communicating between processors so maybe that is difficult to map to a more standard architecture. If there's just one thing you can't emulate efficiently the whole thing falls apart.
What I do know is that Microsoft is a/the top software company whereas Sony.... really isn't. Also, Microsoft started off by buying up some PowerPC->X86 emulation tech company that had already sussed out a major part of the emulation equation.
PS3 emulation isn't really a critical feature for PS4 anyway, if Microsoft were the market leader with the more powerful hardware I doubt they would have bothered with it either. But this gives them a feature to market especially at all the remaining Xbox 360 users that haven't upgraded to a new console yet. It slows the hemorrhage of 360->PS4 transitions.

Aren't both consoles x86 now? I thought one of the big developments with this cycle was how much easier this was going to be for cross platform development, or something. If so couldn't you get ps4 "backwards compatibility" with any prior cross platform release on the PS3, by just... I don't know, re-tooling the old PC version?
I am not a programmer so "re-tool" is about as sophisticated as I get with programmer lingo.

If you're 'retooling' a PC version you aren't providing backwards compatibility for PS3. Cross-platform development is easier now, but that has nothing to do with emulating last-gen hardware, the PS3's design quirks are most definitely relevant there.
Going forward it should be easier/trivial to maintain backwards compatibility Xbox Two->Xbox One and PS5->PS4 assuming they stay in the same mostly mundane PC parts design philosophy. Much in the same way where gamecube->wii was backwards compatible, since they used pretty much the same architecture. It seems like Xbox One will be a little harder since they might need to keep ESRAM around in the next Xbox specifically so they can emulate the Xbox One's ESRAM. Or who knows, maybe that doesn't matter if whatever memory they have by the time the next set of boxes come out is fast enough.

Again, Sony wants you to use PS Now, they just added another 105 games to it. The pricing is a rip, but that's what their plan is. They wouldn't add BC even if they could, they spent a fortune on the Now servers and infrastructure.

The PS3's Cell processor is a completely different architecture than x86-64. It's not doable on the PS4. There are far fewer issues with the 360 to One.

Gears of War 3 and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 are becoming backwards compatible? Awesome. Pity the Borderlands title is the first one and not the second. I'd play COD titles if they were made backwards compatible actually. Crysis 3 please.

But it's the only point you made. The rest is just an assertion. What about the PS3 specifically renders it completely impossible to emulate on PS4 hardware?

XONE Backward Compat is now live (along with the new dashboard UIs which are way better than before, like night and day). If you own any of the 104 games of the first wave release, you can play them now on XONE.
