This game had a go-nowhere thread for the beta, and that's about it? While that heaping pile of Ubi-turd, The Division has page after page of people trying (and surely failing) to have fun?!? Preposterous! A completely pedestrian 3rd person shooter, with ridiculous input lag, and a completely useless endgame, including the Incursions, which couldn't possibly be more tedious. That game is proof that some people will do anything for loot-grind. Disgusting.
On the other hand, let my boy Jamie Adenuga break down why R6 Siege is DA BEST GAME OUT!
Word.
The DLC is free. The design is genius. 5v5, tactical, no aim assist whatsoever. Kind of like if Counter Strike wasn't an ancient game with a goofy no ADS and stupid weapon buying between rounds (GTFO with that shit). Destructible maps that can play out in infinite ways. Unique operators for offense and defense with different abilities and roles.
An example of what sets this game apart, the sound design:
That's what I'm talking about, my strange... French Canadian... lady-friend (someday I shall take her to the finest poutine hole in all of Montreal, mes amis)! No more antiquated occlusion based 360 degree super sonar COD bullshit. Use your brain, morans!
On Xbox the image is a little low res, but the frame rate is mostly solid. I just loaded up the PS4 version for the first time earlier today, I had double dipped on it since it was on sale, and this is a game worth supporting. Very nice resolution and rock solid 60hz frame rate. It plays great with XIM, only issue is a slighlty low max turn rate. The game had some technical issues (especially with weird input bugs, and map exploits) but most of that has been cleared up and I think the game is in really excellent shape as of the latest patch.
Here's some highlights of my first night on the PS4 version, in the filthy casual playlist (Ranked is locked until you have played the game a bit):
Buy this shit, YA GET ME?!

its very rough around the edges, but beneath theres a really good game. Its a shame that it never got the full funding and attention it really deserves, and it never will

I thought there was a good game hiding in The Division. I was wrong. I don't know if Siege will never get attention and funding. It's hard to cut through their PR speak. Obviously this was a troubled game from a development perspective, I mean c'mon, this is the trailer they put out 4 years before Siege came out: Not to mention the fake gameplay footage: That shit looks kind of like a strange hodgepodge of Rainbow and The Division. So yeah, kind of like Titanfall it seems like they started out with grand ambitions, things went a bit south, and they regrouped to put out a multiplayer only game. Well I guess Siege sort of has single player, it's very basic though. Anyway, their earnings reports have mentioned "record engagement levels" for R6: www.ubisoftgroup.com/comsite_common/en-US/images/04ubisoft%20fy16%20english%20final_tcm99-250447_tcm99-196733-32.pdf , active users being at 60% four months after launch does sound pretty good, but it's hard to say what that means exactly without a player count visible to the end user. Edit: Some numbers for The Division and Siege from steamcharts.com: steamcharts.com/app/365590#Allsteamcharts.com/app/359550#AllSiege does seem more like a PC game and The Division more like a console game, but those are the only numbers I have to work with. The Division has really died and now has fewer players than Siege despite starting off at 6x the player count. Anecdotally I'd say The Division still gets played more on console than Siege just based on quick surveys of my friends list. It seems like the game has a decently long tail. I think more Siege is in their future, though probably in the form of a sequel. The free DLC support is pretty good, but it would have been nice to see it fleshed out with better production values. All the regular operators have cool little intro videos, which are unfortunately missing for all the DLC operators. Also, it would be cool if they crafted new "Situations" to show off the new maps and operators as they are released. The situations from the base game are pretty barebones anyway, so how hard can it be to do it?

R6 Siege is free to play this weekend on PC and Xbox One, also on sale digitally for half off. You could do a lot worse.

Doesn't have "tactical" button layout on console (swapping crouch and melee buttons), is therefore unplayable for me. I had a blast with it on my buddy's PC though using a keyboard & maus

Probably due to the stick clicks doubling as lean buttons while in ADS. Though I don't know maybe you could get away with losing crouch while ADS. Console controls are always kind of lacking in custom mapping. Though I think PC games could learn a couple of things from consoles. Specifically the tap vs hold for multiple functions on one button. I don't want a separate prone and crouch button. And I really don't need an extra interact button when the console solution of press to reload, hold to interact works pretty well. I mean why the fuck am I reaching for the likes of the 5,6 and G buttons?

Due to PC games usually being lazy ports of the console versions these days, we're usually forced to have your goofy '4 actions bound to one button' control schemes. The nice games give us the option to bind them separately. At least CoD has always given us choice about sprint/hold breath and crouch/prone/change stance. You can bind them to separate keys or bind one key to an action that does both. Being able to instantly go prone instead of having to wait by holding the 'change stance' button is objectively superior. Sprint/hold breath makes sense to bind to one key though since they are mutually exclusive actions. We do have over 100 potential buttons but being efficient and reducing the amount you have to move your hand is always good.

We do have over 100 potential buttons but being efficient and reducing the amount you have to move your hand is always good. Yeah I could see why someone would want a separate prone button. Holding CTRL is still quicker for me than getting to Z, which I find to be pretty awkward on WASD. Really the only buttons in that cluster I really like to use are Q, E, R, and C. The one that really drives me nuts is in Battlefield. On console, the exit/enter vehicle button is holding down the reload button. That's perfect. I don't mind losing a few milliseconds to wait for the key up rather than key down on that button at all. What I do mind is how on PC no matter what button I set, if I accidentally hit it, that's it, I'm falling out of my helicopter. With this game I don't even know. I know I need to do some remapping on the PC version. I know I can't replicate what I do on my XIM, because I need Q and E for leaning, whereas on XIM my shift and my mouse thumb are the leans when in ADS and sprint/melee when not. One of those aforementioned goofy combos that by happenstance works out somewhat logically for me at least since left lean is on my left hand and right lean is on my right hand. G by default is a your equipment, which often means grenades... which you need to cook, so that's the most awkward thing in the world since you also need to strafe generally at the same time. I guess you're meant to get at it with your thumb maybe, but thumb doing anything other than dedicated space bar messes with me. Also on PC space bar, which vaults, rappels, and the like, doesn't return you to standing, which I hate. Especially since it's basically the same button as on XIM, but there it does reset your stance. Will, So it doesn't provide tactical for you, but I mean, PS4 and Xbox One both let you remap buttons on the OS level now right? So I mean, you could swap them. The only problem is that it would make 'lean right' into your B button which is a bit shit.

Yeah I saw that. The question is, is there going to be a public list of people that got banned or something? I remember on MW2 I'd bookmark the profiles of obvious cheaters and circle back around a few weeks later to see if they ate a VAC ban. Sure enough, most (but certainly not all) of the them did. But still the game was never close to cheater free. Since upgrading my computer a few weeks ago, I've been on Siege, BF4, Black Ops 2, and some Titanfall. The only one I haven't run across any cheaters in was Titanfall, but then again I only played like two rounds.
Edit: So I'm playing a bit right now, and I constantly get messages about players being removed. Except they are players that aren't even in my game. Pretty annoying Ubi.

latest patch was really good, great gadget tweaks/additions that combined have a subtle but pleasant influence over the meta (more methods to help deal with roamers, shields having a bit more presence, more resource- and teamwork oriented gadget use in general)
game still has 2 big issues though; hit detection is ass and more importantly, the pump action shotguns suck. Cmon dudes

This is $25 on PSN right now. Can new players get and stay in matches at all, or is it just team killing/vote to kick fun times?

At scrub levels the team kills and boots for little to no reason are fairly common. It really is best if you can go in with a solid voting block of 3 to make it a more pain free experience. That said just brush it off and requeue. Play casuals until you start getting a feel for the game, and then on to ranked. Casual doesn't quite provide enough structure. The objectives are all random so you don't really get a feel what the common selections and battles are until you play a bit of ranked. The best way to not get cornholed by teammates right off the start is to not fight over popular operators, let people get their picks in, then pick from the remaining pool, preferably someone with some team utility, like Rook or Thermite. That might be less of an issue these days as the roster has expanded considerably.
If you're interested in a tough, competitive game based on teamwork and map knowledge more so than pure twitch shooting skills, this is the game. If you want to run around pubstomping, winning 95% of your matches COD style farming filthy casuals and dropping endless streaks on their faces... this is not the game. Oh, and remember, this game has no aim assist.
At $25 I think it's a fantastic value, especially as they've just announced a year 2 of content. The new bullet caliber thing in the upcoming patch this week sounds killer as well. They've really been making this game better and better over time.

Currently on sale on XONE for $25 until the end of day today, does this contain all the Year 1 content? This sounds like the kind of game I might enjoy . I am not a big fan of games designed for feel-good pub stomping, more interested in playing competitive games with players/teams at the similar skill level (say Halo). How noob friendly is this game? In other words, how much time would it require for a noob to become familiar with the game mechanics? Can a noob have fun going solo? Is the game's population at a healthy level for sustained play, say 6-12 months?

Did some quick research around lunch and I am buying this game: free DLCs, Y2 confirmed to ensure longevity, and ranked competitive experience I like, can't go wrong with $25 Expect crap load of noob questions from me in the next month... Or if any bros can provide a quick and dirty noob guide, it would be awesome. QQ regarding ranked play: can a low rank player playing with his friends at much higher rank?

I don't think theres any hard limit on rank difference between party members, but I'm not sure as I've literally never played ranked
here's a few things to start out with
- speed > armour. The person who peaks has the advantage (provided you know enemy positions), and speed makes peaking easier
- spread out players if on defence, but at the same time don't have your entire team outside the objective room. It's a balance that differs depending on map and objective location
- check out guys like Serenity17 and Macie Jay on youtube. theyre on PC, but they make enjoyable content and guides that are applicable to console as well
- shield ops are broken, wait till they get fixed before bothering
- tachanka is a meme {-}7

I don't know how it compares to Halo. You can play with whoever you want ranked, you just can't queue without having a player that's rank 20. That's not a particularly high threshold to clear though. Lots of people make smurf accounts in this game to abuse the ranking system, though I'm guessing that probably happens in just about any game with a serious ranked mode. Ideally witty, we want you to play your ranked placement matches, get crushed. Get a bit better at the game. Then queue with us to make our lives just a little easier . It's all based on wins and losses, so if you play with the same people EVERY game then you will be the same rank, and if you're starting from a different place you'll eventually converge on a rank. A team is greater than the sum of its parts though, so if you learn how to work with the people you play with, you can help just by doing your job whereas a random will do something unpredictable to lose a round. Sucking at a job is better than not showing up for a job. And not showing up is what randoms will do. As far as the free DLC thing goes, everyone gets the maps for free. Cosmetics vary from in-game currency to real-world currency, sometimes with an option for both. The operators are very important though. They cost a lot of in-game currency. If you play a lot you'll get them. If you make sure to do your challenges, including grabbing the weekly ones from the Ubisoft Club or whatever, it will go a bit faster. We're up to 8 DLC operators now though, which is 200,000 renown, that is a lot of play time, but remember the game has been out for about a year now so what can you do? For reference the standard operators all together end up costing about 25,000, or the same as one DLC character. And you get a little bit of a headstart with some free renown for watching the tutorials, and some easy renown for doing the Situations. I guess there's the first thing, play the Situations. It's a decent tour of some of the levels and game mechanics. Get all three stars on most of the maps. If one of the star objectives is eluding you then move on to the next and maybe circle back later. Play them all on Normal difficulty. The higher difficulties are a lot harder for not much more renown. Totally not worth it. In options turn off v-sync to get a better frame rate. You probably want to turn off aim assist as well. It doesn't exist in multiplayer so just pull off the Band-Aid nice and quick here, because it will hurt more the longer you do it. You thought you were at least competent at aiming? Bad news, you were wrong Witty! Hmm, you're probably going to wonder which operators you should unlock. Fair question, as they end up escalating in cost as you buy them. So you want to buy one out of each of the CTU units, as that's how they're organized. If you buy two from the same CTU, the second costs more money. Avoid Tachanka, as stated he's a meme, not an effective operator. Though supposedly he has a buff coming. But we'll jump off that bridge when we get there. You probably want to avoid the shield operators like Montagne, and Blitz. Fuze has a shield too but it's optional. He can do normal gun things. Let me just try to suggest a character or two per CTU that would be ok for noobs: SAS - I'd say Mute here as a defender. He's an important support character. You use his devices on reinforced walls. You can also use them to block drones right off the start. But he's a guy that you kind of need, and lots of people don't really want to play him. On offense Thatcher is an important support character that most people would rather not play. Just be careful to not waste him. His main job is to follow Thermite and use his EMPs wherever Thermite says. FBI SWAT - These are all a little more advanced. Ash is very popular and will got fought over. Thermite is an extremely important character that needs to be picked most rounds. People like him more than Mute though, and he requires a little more thought. You need to get to the right breach point. You can't die right off the start. The two defenders are.. ehhh.. Castle You will drive your teammates nuts with his ability if you don't know what you're doing. Pulse is also more of an advanced character. Maybe don't start with FBI characters. When it comes time to buy one, I guess Castle, and focus more on Castling windows than doors, and if you're going to do a door, do it as the round starts or right after so you don't trap teammates. GIGN - Get Rook here. No thought needs to be put into his ability. Drop the armor for yourself and teammates. Use his MP5. Camp the objective and aim for headshots. Nice and simple. If you need to go offense in this category then Twitch isn't bad. You need to learn the game a bit to do well with her drone, but she's fast, has a great gun in the F2, and isn't a super common pick. Spetsnaz - Probably Kapkan here. He puts traps on doors and windows. Just place them around the objective or really anywhere. It's on the enemy team to be absent-minded and walk into them. But they'll get you some free kills. Fuze is the choice on offense, but get Kapkan first. GSG 9 - IQ is a fast attacker character with decent guns that's not a super common pick. Jaeger is one of the most popular defenders, so probably don't buy first. Bandit is a useful defender that's fairly common, but not a bad starter choice in my opinion. He does a bit of the same job as Mute, but you can juggle his devices, and he's a fast character who can have an ACOG scope so people who want to go around getting headshots at the start of the round will pick him. Once you knock out all the Situations, I recommend running through maps over and over again in Terrorist Hunt Classic. One map at a time to learn them. If you go to matchmaking settings you can disable all but one map, and all but one mode. It's a little tucked away, but it's in the options. Start with House. It's small. It's fun. I'd run Solo instead of matchmaking. And just drill yourself on the map until you know where you are at all times. Map knowledge is SO important in this game. I started out mostly be playing Casual on all maps, and I think that was the wrong approach. So many maps and objectives that you just end up getting confused and taking longer to learn. If you look down by the compass it gives you callouts for where you are as well. Try to learn those, and as you move through the map quiz yourself on where you think you're going by name. It's very important to know that Workshop is top floor across the hallway from Kid's Bedroom, and that they're both by Side Stairs for example. Once you understand the static layout of the map, you need to understand what walls are breachable, and what rooms share walls. And you needd to think vertically too. The square trap door things allow you to breach and drop down a floor. Or throw grenades up into a room from below. Eventually you need to learn how the map works vertically as well. And knowing where and how the defense can try to pick offensive players off their spawn is a thing too. The spawn points and angles available from indoors to outdoors and vice versa are a thing. Focus on the basic map layout first, just be aware that it really never ends. These are not three lane COD maps.

Great advice. Its a shame that frost is a DLC character since she makes a really good "beginner" character. Setting traps forces you to think about the map layout and where everything is in relation to each other. Sure, you start with "set-it-and-forget-it" traps, but eventually you start to learn "what works" and "what doesn't." Then you start applying those learnings. Traps are a good way to get that instant gratification endorphin release for seeing those "injure" points pop up because you did "what works."
Actually... now that I think of it...Kapkan is probably a GREAT starting character for those same reasons.
Rook is obviously noob-friendly, but WE EXPECT GREAT THINGS FROM OUR FEARLESS LEADER WITTY.
If you are playing with randoms and nobody picks thermite... give him a try. Feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders is something everyone should experience a few times.
Also... VERY IMPORTANT People in this game are horrible people. The worst. Just the worst. Also friends get mad at each other over this game. Its...uh... very competitive.

Sounds like a lot of work for noobs, with the limited play time I guess I won't expect to become decent at it until summer time... Learning the maps is going to be a tough grind for me, as I am severely orientation challenged, especially vertically Hopefully once Y2 starts coming out, they can accelerate the Y1 unlock rate. In Halo: there are no restrictions on teaming up with higher ranked friends in ranked play, it is just you won't be able to have much fun. The skill gap between players are so great, the players at higher level are basically untouchable by lower level players.

It's not clear what happens with Y1 operators in Y2 for people who don't have them yet. I've read that people with both season passes will get an additional 600 R6 credits (i.e. the stuff you get with real currency) so maybe that means that Y2 purchasers get all the operators, who knows. An example of helping out without using your shooting skills. Flushed out some game for our shield wildcards Dumien argyle antiques: xboxdvr.com/gamer/Pegasus%20Actual/video/23996002As for 1v1 encounters compared to Halo, anyone can beat anyone in a head to head gunfight. A headhsot is a kill every time. There's no health regen... there are a couple of ways to get some health back, but generally if someone gets shot in an encounter that they win, they will be weak and give the opponent an advantage in his next encounter. The real secret to success is getting the drop on people, and avoiding letting them get the same.

Probably the same patching schedule. Every 12 or so weeks, with big polishing patches inbetween
also, small tip for shotguns: ALWAYS use a laser sight. The laser sight tightens spread for both hip and aimed fire, which makes the shotguns go from bad to quite decent. The small tradeoff is that you leave a visible dot wherever you aim, but that can be easily hid. It's not a big deal anyhow since shotguns are shit for holding angles
lasers are still questionable for other weapons tho
