I played for a few hours. I'm pretty terrible. I haven't played an FPS since Jan '16, I think.

Beta is a separate game download, search for it in the store. I did the same thing.
I played it today for about 30 minutes. Very initial thoughts
- War was kind of fun and new. - The WWII sounds and ambiance is a nice change from pew pew laser beams future sounds. - Footsteps are indeed totally inaudible which is unrealistic and sucky. - There is just something fun about shooting Germans. - My god the lobby and general UI is awful. Where am I, what am I doing here, what is this information, how do I exit this screen, so many questions. - Post game winners' circle is either broken or hilariously lame. - Divisions are their versions of specialists. I get it, but not totally sold on the concept. I agree it is limiting. I prefer the old method of class selection, then select your "specialist" or whatever rather than loadouts being a subcategory within each division. It is a little confusing but I am sure I will get used to it. - Pick 10 or variations thereof, like in Ghosts, is the best loadout solution. There is no reason to go backwards to the old version other than to say you are doing something different which is stupid.

And pushing the download from xbox.com does nothing by the way, even with the recommended settings on. Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction. I appreciate it a lot.

Footsteps are definitely an issue, and can only be heard when things are quiet. The UI is an abomination. And, I'm pretty terrible at FPS at the moment.
Looking at my friends list and the discussion here, it doesn't look like there will be a large enough regular group of players to make CoD worth it this year. Same goes for Destiny 2, which will have even less people playing it, and I have zero faith in Bungie making significant improvements with their second try at that game. Battlefront 2 looks like a safe purchase, as I certainly have enough friends who will casually play a Star Wars shooter.

I am also doing pretty terrible and I have been playing COD straight through since forever. It's a very different game than IW and BO3 as far as how it feels and plays. That might be a positive for many. (I didn't mind either in hind sight.)
For one thing, I can't see shit when I shoot. It's super annoying. Toning down the muzzle flash and accompanying dense fog of colored smoke would be nice.
Sprint out time is deadly! Have to really adjust from BO3 and IW, two straight games where sprinting all the time had basically no downside.
One of the maps... Aachen? Is typical Sledgehammer Domination style. B is off to the side, not in the middle. I don't get that.
Also enemy Germans speaking English in a German accent is hilarious (and lame, but hilarious.) "Zey are gooing tru zee Library!"

Maps are trash. Any weapon that isn't one of the SMGs or the STG is trash. There is almost no reason to pick all but two or three of the basic perks, and you can only use one at the time. Which is trash.

It basically is WaW, they even have some of the crossing sightlines. So did anyone notice that game ending Killcams are basically Play of the Game cams now? The way they implemented it though was incredibly lazy; you just have to get the most kills in quick succession.
Killstreaks are boring, the audio is almost useless, gun balance is lolzy and it feels like I'm playing a 2002 game again presenting itself as a new experience.

I'm sure they can add other parameters into the mix, I just wanna see interesting kills, not nonstop kill feeds off full sprint morons.

Yeah, I'd rather see game saving plays. Tie breakers, saving the objective at the last second, etc. I had a match where it was only me and one other guy vs the entire other team. We were two down, with 10-15 secs left. I managed to get two kills in time to make the game a Draw instead of a loss. Something like that is a bit more impressive than a shitty double kill.

I mean, I'm sure their logic is to make final killcams more interesting and to avoid the "this dude really sucks at the game but got the last kill while camping a corner so he gets featured at the end of the game." They could add more parameters, like the kill from the furthest away or furthest hip-fire kill or clutch kill in an SnD round. But how does that solve the "this killcam is boring" or "this killcam took zero skill" problem? This seems like this is the only real way to reward good players with a killcam featuring their best play and to make that killcam at least somewhat interesting to everyone who is forced to watch it at the end of the game.

- There is just something fun about shooting Germans. What about female, black Germans with marijuana leaves on their guns?

Looks like the next iteration will go full Saints Row 3- you can play as a white anthro dog Soviet soldier fighting in France. Not caucasian white, I mean white facepaint white.

Let's talk about the War gamemode. Good idea, bad execution. Spawn delay of roughly one second + spawn locations within a grenade throw distance from the objective makes it a fragfest and removes a lot of the skill/strategy. The spawn protection is ridiculous, it makes some weapons unuseable. If I'm able to push up to where the enemies are spawning, spawn them further back.

The first offensive spawn delay could be shorter. As it is, it gives the defense an advantage.

Can't speak for other platforms, but on xbox, I did hear enemy footsteps when it was quiet and I wasn't moving, but they are very inconsistent, basically useless. I think the dead silence perk in that division class is actually bugged; they seemed to be louder than other division classes.

I enjoyed it a lot. Don't expect there to be a consensus, different people like different things. The only people you shouldn't listen to are those who spout their opinions as fact or the widely held belief, as if they know better.

Seemed like I could hear them in one game, then I couldn't in the next even on the same map. I think it was bugged with certain division/perk set ups.

I missed the beta, but reading some of the above thoughts, I can't seem to find a good consensus. Was it fun? When I participated in the BO3 beta, it got me excited to play cod again. I did not have a repeat experience with ww2. It felt like uninspired, buggy, lolbalanced game that will not be remotely ready to redeem the call of duty ip when it releases.

I missed the beta, but reading some of the above thoughts, I can't seem to find a good consensus. Was it fun? The basic mechanics of moving, crouching, going prone, standing up, mantling, bunny hopping etc are all feeling solid. Really good. Feels like AW just a touch faster in certain animations. This is the game's best feature. It's not a step forward but just a correction from the last couple years of CoD. The new dolphin dive is actually beneficial because it increases your speed to prone - it's not gimmicky like all the other dolphins'. Jumping dropshots are nerfed by the map design due to artificially small ceilings in place to promote the use of the dolphin dive mechanic. Oh and random objects are placed on corners that make you mantle instead of doing your intended jump around a corner (much like ghosts). The game endeavors to give your position away to the enemy. Ghost/assassin only works while moving but stops the moment you take any action(even to shoot a UAV down with a launcher). Suppressors are only available on SMGs. Team play is going to benefit as a result - I think this is a positive for your playstyle. Some very interesting spawn mechanics exist on that big map (aachen?). IF you can flank, you can stand on the other side of the enemy spawn. Your team spawns on the far side of the map and the enemy spawns inbetween you and your team. The enemy is pointed away from you and towards your team. 1 man spawn flips are impossible. A big problem will be the game's depth. It's pretty hollow based on the stuff available in the beta. I'm just heading to a movie and may update this post later.

It's pretty hollow based on the stuff available in the beta. My biggest complaints with the game are, as you already mentioned, spawn flipping (or a near lack-of spawn flipping), and the size of the maps (which I think is a contributing factor to the spawns). I'm just heading to a movie and may update this post later. If you're seeing IT, let me know how it is.
