Or legendary weapons specifically, worth keeping.
Year 1 is coming to a close, and theres lots of people coming back to the game or just starting up with Forsaken expansion right around the corner. We don't know if any of these weapons will still be meta and worth using but for now these are the most effective tools available.
Keep in mind Bungie has said all year 1 weapons will still be earnable after Forsaken expansion drops.
Weapons included in this list are the statistical outliers and/or have certain attributes which makes them outclass other weapons within their respective archetypes or sub groups. Keep in mind if you suggest a weapon for this list, try to compare it to the weapons already listed and ask yourself whether or not this weapon does the job better in any way.
List of PVE dominant weapons come first, then PVP weapons.
PVE
Kinetic
Nameless Midnight
Acquired from: Vanguard vendor
Why: Explosive rounds increases headshot damage by about 22% and bodyshot damage by about 30% against yellow and orange bar enemies. This in combination with vertical recoil, good reload speed and good range this makes it the best kinetic primary for sustained DPS. Explosive rounds also negate a lot of damage drop off at range. All around good for all the raids, and good for sitting back and picking off bosses or orange bars.
Niflheim Frost
Acquired from: Braytech Schematic (Sleeper Nodes)
Why: Long range scout with good all-around stats and excellent sustained DPS for bosses and picking off enemies at range. The big difference between nameless midnight is the lack of explosive rounds but instead having kill clip. Kill clip is what makes this gun and can make clearing trash mobs a lot easier than NM. Very hard weapon to acquire though.
Midnight Coup
Acquired from: Leviathan Raid
Why: Rampage gives you 65% increased damage at x3 stacks. This bonus with the already high damage-per-shot makes it overkill most trash mobs, but the extra damage is a godsend in prestige raids because of how tanky and hard hitting the enemies are. Widely considered to be the best Hand cannon in the game.
The Old Fashioned/D.F.A./Better Devils
Acquired from: Gunsmith/Tree of Probabilities Nightfall/Crucible vendor
Why: Some would argue 150 RPM hand cannons like Midnight Coup are straight up better, but the higher damage from these 140 RPMs might be more preferable for some people. All these 3 hand cannons offer the same, just does it differently. This is one of the few instances preference is a factor as you can make any of these work. Old fashioned gets 50% extra damage from kill clip, D.F.A. has excellent stats and rampage, Better Devils has the increased damage to yellow and orange bar enemies.
Antiope-D
Acquired from: Gunsmith
Why: This was a pvp centric gun for the longest time but the kill clip buff (from 33% to 50%) as well as the SMG pve buff makes this an excellent weapon for hectic situations with adds such as thrall filled nightfalls or raid encounters like baths and gauntlet. Terrible at slow paced strikes and PVE content where you need to sit back.
Redrix's Claymore
Acquired from: Reaching 2100 glory points in competitive PVP season 3 (ends 4th of september 2018)
Why: Best trash mob cleaner in the game in terms of DPS, has the best perk set up of any legendary in the game. Its fun, it does way too much damage, it breaks the game. If you get it, you probably dont have to put it down pretty much ever. God help you if you decide to grind comp tho.
Energy
Inaugural Address
Acquired from: Leviathan Raid
Why: No pulse rifles have the add clearing potential of hand cannons or the sustained DPS of scout rifles. This pulse rifle is very sufficient all around because of outlaw giving you very low downtime between reloads as well as pairing very well with kill clip. Good for adds, okay for sustained damage.
Manannan SR4
Acquired from: Gunsmith
Why: Explosive rounds as you know are very nice at range and against explosive rounds. This is one of the few options with explosive rounds in the energy slot, excellent when paired with something more close range oriented like a hand cannon or an SMG. Explosive rounds is what sells the weapon, all around good stats except for range.
Pleiades Corrector
Acquired from: Future War Cult during faction rally event
Why: Rampage is so incredibly good now, and putting the perk on a excellent energy scout rifle is no exception. 200 RPMs doesnt one-shot trash mobs in some activites, but rampage helps completely negate this. Like the Manannan, good for sitting back but this one is a lot better in the hair of things cause of rampage.
Valakadyn
Acquired from: Gunsmith
Why: 720 RPM auto rifles are a godsend for pve. 720 RPM gives you the highest rate of fire for ARs making it incredibly east to hit shots. It also has a ton of ammo because of its intrinsic perk as well as reloading very fast when your magazine is empty. This coupled with high mag capacity makes it the best auto rifle all-around for all PVE activities. The 720 RPM autos have so much going for them, but when it comes to the balance between reload speed and magazine size Valakadyn is the best out of the bunch. High mag capacity and rate of fire makes it the best legendary weapon for shooting Calus skulls in the raid
Postitive Outlook
Acquired from: Vanguard Vendor
Why: The one exception to the Valakadyn being the best is the positive outlook. Kill clip makes add clearing a breeze in-between DPS phases, and its steady while firing at range. If valakadyn had kill clip however you could probably vault this auto forever.
The Number
Acquired from: Future War Cult during faction rally event
Why: Almost forgot about this one! The other exception to the valakadyn. This monster has low base range, but has ricochet rounds (richochet rounds increases the range before your damage falls off significantly despite not affecting the range stat) this coupled with high impact reserves to increases range even further makes it the longest range auto rifle in the game. Not the best add-clearer, but good for boss damage at range for sustained DPS.
Power
Curtain Call
Acquired from: Vanguard Vendor
Why: From vanilla D2 up until warmind expansion drops this was the highest DPS power weapon for boss damage. Right now we have other toys as well as snipers back in the groove, yet still this the best rocket launcher in the game. All rockets have the same damage only having different blast radius, while cluster bombs increases damage significantly. The one thing that makes this better than something like Sins of the past is the higher rate of fire. Because of the higher rate of fire you can fire the weapon faster with rally barricade and lunafaction boots. Most snipers beat this thing in terms of sheer DPS right now, but when you need a rocket launcher when things get hairy in something like round 1-6 escalation protocol this weapon will serve you well. Very good weapon if you dont have any other fancy high dps weapons for boss damage.
IKELOS_SG_v1.0.1
Acquired from: Escalation Protocol Level 7 Boss
Why: This weapon has the highest rate of fire shotgun archetype, huge magazine capacity of 8 and a perk which grants you 50% more damage after a melee hit (not kill). No other weapons in the game will do more damage close range than this monster. Its by far the best weapon for the dog encounter in the Leviathan raid, and a team of three in any activity bum rushing enemies with three of these will just make everything die. If you get this shotgun you never have to get another shotgun for PVE, that is until something in Forsaken outclasses it.
IKELOS_SR_v1.0.1
Acquired from: Escalation Protocol Level 7 Boss
Why: Similar to the Ikelos shotgun rendering all other legendary shotguns obsolete this sniper does the same for other legendary snipers. The box breathing perk gives it the same damage bonus as D.A.R.C.I. but has the ability to be any element. The whisper of the worm is gonna be better by for a specific elemental burn or if you need to use a legendary this is gonna be your best bet. You just ADS, wait for box breathing to proc then you spam the entire mag at a boss.
Honorable mentions (PVE):
Origin story/Duty Bound
Acquired from: Vanguard Vendor/Savathun's Song Nightfall Strike
Why: Rampage, its what makes these guns. The thing is though for your kinetic slot you most likely want hand cannon or a scout just because the kinetic weapons do more damage per bullet than their energy counterpart. Scouts and Hand cannons need that extra damage to one-shot certain trash mobs, which is why auto rifles are mostly reserved for your energy slot (or should be). Despite this, when you want a weapon to go through strikes and you just want to hold down the trigger these are your best bet for the kinetic category, all other kinetic auto rifles pales in comparison.
Annual Skate
Acquired from: Gunsmith
Why: For the same reason you dont want auto in your kinetic slot, you dont want hand cannons in your energy slot (some scouts work tho, 200 rpm ones). Despite this if you are gonna go with a hand cannon this gonna be your go-to. Its got extended mag and outlaw giving you very good add clearing potential and ease of use. Pretty straight forwards, deserved a mention.
Thats it for the PVE category, any other weapon is either completely outclassed, has lackluster perks or just doesnt have good enough DPS to be worth using (almost all pulse rifles, 110 hand cannons etc.)
PVP
Kinetic
Orimunds Anvil/Braytech Winter Wolf
Acquired from: Iron Banner/Sleeper Nodes
Why: Auto rifles arent in the best place in PVP right now but still the highest impact archetype reigns supreme. With the last 2 expansions we've had two new 450 RPM autos rake the stage and giving some competition to Uriels gift. You will still be outclassed by SMGs at closer ranges, and pulse rifles at medium range. These two are probably the two best looking weapons in the game tho.
The Time-Worn Spire/Autumn Wind
Acquired from: Iron Banner/Crucible Vendor
Why: Just like your Grasp Of Malok and Clever Dragon in Destiny 1, these pulse rifles bring auto rifle-like handling while still retaining a very competitive time to kill (1.07 seconds). You can shoot these from further ranges than you'd think due to their high aim assist and rate of fire making them very forgiving weapons to use. If you're having issues with being precise using pulse rifles and you want something more similar to autos these are the way to go. Try to use at least 1 kinetic counterbalance mod though, 2 if you're a hunter which makes the recoil completely vertical.
Eystein-D/Relentless
Acquired from: EDZ Vendor/Trials Of The Nine
Why: Yeah why use these over Vigilance Wing or Graviton Lance? High impact pulse rifles keeps you less out of cover than a vigilance wing, and produces more damage in a single burst than graviton lance (87 compared to 71). Eystein has ricochet rounds, high range scope and high impact reserves making it amazing at long ranges. Relentless is the only high impact pulse aside from Redrix that has a close range sight. It also has headseeker and snapshot making it very forgiving and easy to use. If you're not feeling graviton or vigilance wing these might suit you instead.
Redrix's Claymore
Acquired from: Reaching 2100 glory points in competitive PVP season 3 (ends 4th of september 2018)
Why: Because this thing will kill in 0.60 seconds with desperado and coupled with devourlock you will become an unstoppable force.
The Old Fashioned/D.F.A./Better Devils
Acquired from: Gunsmith/Tree of Probabilities Nightfall/Crucible vendor
Why: I will say though these are seen in every match on PC, but on console the 140 RPM hand cannons could be a tad better. On PC these are META no doubt, on console these are only good if you're making excellent use of you vertical space and mobility. They do not have sufficent kill times in a straight up gunfight against the good pulse rifles you see right now. On PC however, you got one of these you're going to destruction town.
Midnight Coup/Dire promise
Acquired from: Leviathan Raid/Dead Orbit during faction rally event
Why: Same applies to the 140 RPM hand cannons listed above, these are a lot better on PC. These are 150 RPM but require the same shots to kill, but with a lot less range. These hand cannons are ideal if you're incredibly aggressive.
Antiope-D
Acquired from: Gunsmith
Why: Highest range SMG, with the best perk in the game, in the best archetype in terms of time to kill. This is widely considered to be one of the best weapons in the game for anything PVP. I will point out some of its flaws, if you want that juicy 0.90 TTK in close range you need to hit all headshots, not miss a single shot for it to kill that fast. The only downside of this gun is other higher rate of fire SMGs will kill you faster when it comes to bodyshots. But the pros outweigh the cons tremendously in this one, once you get kill clip going you should be tearing it up.
New City
Acquired from: EDZ vendor/Gunsmith (Not too sure on this one tbh)
Why: The SMGs that beat Antiope-D close range? This is the one right here. No other 900 RPM SMG has this high stats in the game, and it also has quickdraw on it making handling lighting fast. The secret to using this weapon is just going for bodyshots, as long as you get the first shot off this will win you the gunfight unless they have something with one-shot potential.
Imminent Storm
Acquired from: Reaching 200 glory points in competitive PVP season 3 (ends 4th of september 2018)
Why: Similar to the New City SMG this another one in which you just go for bodyshots. Great when paired with a long range weapon and you need something to shut down a rusher. Its got 750 RPM compared to 900 RPM which makes it more stable (although it still kicks like hell) and the aggressive archetype intrinsic perk gives it 1 point extra damage when doing damage close range, which might come in clutch some times. This is a personal favorite of mine.
Energy
Last Hope/Travelers Judgement/The Vision
Acquired from: Gunsmith/Prophecy Tablets/Unobtainable
Why: They kill in 0.80 seconds close range. Thats the selling point right there. But despite this a lot of people dont like using em. Thats because they are 3-round burst, which makes them very prone to human error. The trick to using these is to aim for center mass, or hip fire only. When you are ADS the first bullet will land where you are pointing you reticle, and the two other shots will be a some inches above that first shot. Therefore the idea is to aim for center mass for the 2 extra bullets to hit headshots. You can try that or you can hipfire only and aim for the head that works too.
Darkest Before/Requiem-45
Acquired from: Trials Of The Nine/Mars Vendor
Why: Same reason as autumn wind and time-worn spire. High rate of fire pulses are easy to use, and in the energy slot you can get a hold of 2 counterbalance mods on every class, making the recoil on them incredibly predictable. The Darkest Before has full auto making it even easier to use, and if you arent using counterbalance mods use the Arrowhead break to migate the recoil, and use smallbore if you're using counterbalance mods. The Requiem-45's selling point is its range which is about the same as vigilance wing and other big boi pulses. This makes you able to flinch people down long sightlines, which is very unexpected for most. Flinching graviton lance users is very easy and satisfying.
Minuet-42/Allegro-34
Acquired from: Gunsmith/Anywhere
Why: This right here is a weird one, because the blue counterpart to the Minuet is actually a lot better than the legendary counterpart. Thats right people we still dont have a energy hand cannon thats better than a blue we got at launch. The selling point? Opening shot, and on the allegro you also get ricochet rounds. Opening shot is nice on both weapons, but ricochet rounds is what makes the Allegro have the highest range of all energy hand cannons in the game right now.
The Hero's Burden/Foggy Notion
Acquired from: Iron banner/Gunsmith
Why: Remember New City? This is it but in the energy slot. Foggy notion has ricochet rounds giving it lotsa range, and Hero's Burden has high caliber rounds which gives people heart attack close range. Rush into someone and just go for body shots with these, problem solved.
IKELOS_SMG_v1.0.1
Acquired from: Escalation Protocol Level 7 Boss
Why: Because its amazing. Hero's burden was considered the hands down best energy SMG in the game, but with this gun out there you got the choice between the two. If you've been paying attention tournaments or D2 pvp events you've probably seen this SMG a lot. Its surprisingly stable and incredibly high handling. Its one of those weapons that just feel really good, like using a really expensive pen. The perk disruption break is never gonna help you in a practical matter, but the perks grave robber and threat detector are very useful.
Stochastic Variable/Phosphorus MG4
Acquired from: Future War Cult during faction rally event/Gunsmith
Why: Phase mag. As 900 RPM SMGs they are pretty mediocre, but selectin phase mag on them makes em into 600 RPM. These are your close range, more stable bootleg Antiope-D's. If you just cant survive not having a Antiope on you at all time then these are good for freeing up your kinetic slot. Stochastic has tap the trigger which makes it very stable for those first shots.
Uriel's Gift/Positive Outlook/The Number
Acquired from: Gunsmith or Nessu Vendor/Vanguard Vendor/Future War Cult during faction rally event
Why: For PVP this is still gonna be your best bet when it comes to auto rifles. They all mostly function the same, with Uriels gift being the easiest to use and having the best stats of the three. Positive outlook has better multi kill potential, and the number is the longest range one.
Power
Play Of The Game
Acquired from: Crucible Vendor
Why: This is the only drum-fed grenade launcher worth using in the entire game. The reason is because its the only one that has proximity detonation, which makes it incredibly forgiving and easy to use. If you have issues getting any kills using power ammo this is gonna be your best bet. The strength lies in its versatility. You can use it while airborne, you can use it on the ground. You can mortar launch at long range, or bum rush at close range. The only drawback is the kill potential with each pickup. You get 4 rounds, and while you can direct impact people for a one shot, you should just two-tap everything just to be sure.
Main Ingredient
Acquired from: Vanguard Vendor
Why: Still arguably the kind of fusion rifles in the game. With liquid coils on this weapon has a 4-bolt kill while still having a short charge rate. This is what makes it so good compared to all other fusion rifles. Rampage makes the gun even easier to use at range as it will negate the damage drop off from each bolt. Amazing weapon, i'll be surprised if theres a better fusion in forsaken.
Erentil FR4/Shock and Awe
Acquired from: Gunsmith/Gunsmith or Nessus vendor
Why: If you want something that can map people these are the ones to look for. Erentil has a perk that increases accuracy based on shots in the mag/battery. This will give it pinpoint accuracy when you only have a single shot left. Shock and Awe has the plan C perk from destiny 1, meaning you can switch to it and get nearly no charge rate.
Blue Shift
Acquired from: Gunsmith
Why: I dont recommend using rockets because of their incredibly low kill potential (1 rocket as opposed to 5 shotguns shells) but if you're gonna use a rocket use Blue Shift. For pvp you want the best balance of velocity and blast radius. No other rocket launcher comes even close to this monsters stats. Please stop using sins of the past in pvp it is a terrible weapon to use. Cluster bombs are terrible in pvp, if you havent killed your target with the initial rocket it means you failed. Its like training wheel that doesnt work.
Hawthorne's Field-Forged Shotgun/Perfect Paradox/Badlands Mk.24
Acquired from: EDZ vendor/Prophecy Tablets (5)/Anywhere
Why: Anyone who's ever played destiny PVP are familiar with shotguns. These are your spam shotguns, you can fire them at full auto and use all your 5 rounds in the blink of any eye. They have very low range, but their 2 shot range are longer than the highest impact shotguns. Also excellent for shutting down supers. Easy to use, forgiving and fun, but chews through ammo faster than anything else. Like the Allegro, this blue boi called Badlands Mk.24 is better than its legendary counterpart. Bungie's balance is weird.
Baligant/Deadpan Delivery
Acquired from: Gunsmith or IO vendor/Vanguard Vendor
Why: Remember felwinters lie? This is the closest you get to that monster. Dont let the low range stat fool you, on shotguns in D2 range doesnt matter all that much. What you want is the Full Choke perk which reduces the shotgun spread (like shot package used to do) but only while ADS. It also removes your ability to do crit damage so you should be aiming for center mass at all times. Deadpan has a tiny bit more range than baligant while also having tight choke, but baligant has snapshot which makes it so much easier to use. If you want to slide shotgun all over the place these are your toys.
Maxim XI/The Frigid Jackal
Acquired from: New Monarchy during faction rally event/Sleeper Nodes
Why: What makes a good sniper in Destiny 2? Snapshot or Quickdraw. You want to be able to be as quick as possible with your peaking, any sniper without snapshot or quickdraw is just not gonna cut it. Maxim has for the longest time been the favorite for snipers due to snapshot and excellent scope. Frigid Jackal has a real good feel to it as well as a wide selection of different perks and barrel options. These are your 90 RPM snipers, meaning they do decent enough impact to 2-shot all opponents.
Alone as a god
Acquired from: Leviathan Raid
Why: This is the snapiest sniper in the game. It cant 2 shot all opponents, but its has really high aim assist and incredibly high handling. If you're aright with something that doesnt hit as hard this will do you good. Otherwise go with the 90/72 rpm snipers.
The Long Walk/Silicon Neuroma
Acquired from: Trials Of The Nine/The Pyramidion Nightfall
Why: Highest impact snipers but with super fast handling? This is it. In a 6v6 setting you can bodyshot most slightly wounded opponents, and you can shut down any supers in the game with a single shot. Thats pretty nifty if you ask me. Unfortunately these two snipers are also one of the hardest to obtain in the game, but if you're a sniper fanatic they are well worth it (for now at least).
Flash and thunder/Orewing's Maul
Acquired from: EDZ vendor or Gunsmith/Iron Banner
Why: This might come as a surprise to most but these things are devastating monsters in the right hands. After they were buffed they're now a very high skill weapon if used correctly. These get 6 rounds per power ammo pickup, meaning if you're precise and choose your engagements carefully you'll get more out of the power ammo drop than any other weapon in the game. These weapons pair well with something you can finish of your opponent with after a quick switch; high impact pulses and hand cannons are ideal. There's a lot to these weapons which I cant really explain in a neat lil column in a list so here's a video which goes into extensive detail about how to utilize these to their highest potential.
I think thats pretty much it, pretty sure I didnt forget anything but Im only human after all.
Year 1 is coming to a close, and theres lots of people coming back to the game or just starting up with Forsaken expansion right around the corner. We don't know if any of these weapons will still be meta and worth using but for now these are the most effective tools available.
