Got my MixAmp Pro, set everything up fairly effortlessly, sound quality drastically improved . Man, did not realize that the sound in Destiny is so rich until today. The $130 is well worth it! One minor annoyance: there is no easy way to mute myself since MS headset does not have a mute button. I guess that I'll have to use XONE party app to achieve that. Never mind, I have the XONE stereo adapter which has mute buttons

Anybody has found a fix to get party chat sound through you headset?
My setup is as follows:
PS4 --> Audio receiver --> headset (AKG 612)
I used my standard headset which came with xbox 360 as a seperate mic, which worked fine. I also did this sometimes on the PS4 when in game chat, as there you can put chat audio through your normal sound, but in party chat, this is not an option...
I could try an easy Y plug between the receiver/controller and headset, but I am afraid this will totally screw up the sound quality.
I am now using my AKG 551 (which I normally use one the road), as it has a build in mic, and I simply plug it into the PS4 controller. And while the sound quality is okay, I think it can be better. (using both my receiver, and the 612, which are open back, which is better for gaming)
For games where footsteps are not that important, 551 stereo is enough. But with the new COD on the horizon, I would like to get the dolby headphones and 512 going again!
Maybe I should buy a usb mic? would that fix the issue? and send chat audio through to the receiver?

Isn't it in the settings?
Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings?
I'm sure there's something in there about outputting chat > whatever you want.
Come to think of it. Since *some* update or other, the option may well be in the party settings now?
Whats the connection to the AV? HDMI or Toslink?
'Y' cable will only work if the amp supports a 4-pole jack.

A (very) quick google suggests you need to change a menu item from 'chat audio' -> 'all audio'
'No time to find out where though.

The thing you are referring to is when you get the sound from your controller I think. This is not really what I want, as I want dolby headphones and added power from my amp. I might be wrong though, maybe they added it in options, I am going to search for that next weekend! I don't really think so though, as I sent PS an email a while back, and they didn't see a need for that option... (probably to push the PS headset or something)
I could find the option in 'Destiny'. But allot of people (logically) prefer party chat over game chat, and therefore I am stuck using my (fanstasic sounding, but simply less positional) closed K551, plugged directly into the controller.
My receiver has an optical in (from PS4) and outputs in a 6.3 mm jack. Don't think it has more than two rings though.
I think my story is quite vague. Let me state it like this, what I tried/want is:
PS4 --optical--> RECEIVER --6.3 mm jack--> HEADPHONES (no mic) PS4 CONTROLLER --> STANDARD PS4 MIC (which I will just clip onto my shirt or cable)
The result is that the chat audio comes out of the PS4 earplug, which is not in my ear...
The bottom part could possibly be changed for a usb mic I think (hope). But I am afraid that might not work, and might still not put all the audio through the optical cable (to receiver etc). I would like to be sure if it works before I spend some money on a separate mic.
Anybody has any experience with USB mics? I don't really want to spend more than +- 40€

I currently roll with A40s and the Mixamp, but I am thinking of switching out the A40s for a pair of Audio Technica ATH-ADG1s. I have also been looking at the Sennheiser G4ME ONE. If I could still lay my hands on a pair of AD700s I would get those and a mic mod, but alas, they are stupid hard to find now.
Edit: I was wrong about the impedance issue with the G4ME ONEs and the Mixamp. They're about identical to the A40s in that regard.

So close to pulling the trigger on the Sennheiser HD 598 with an AntLion Modmic.

The 598's are better for music to me than soundwhoring but still should be 50 times better than Astro A40's in every conceivable way. I don't use mine much anymore now that I have my Sennheiser PC363D.
However I will atest to the fact that the Audio Techinca ATH AD700's are the best soundwhore headset I've ever owned(Not the best for music though). I was lucky enough to get em when a new pair was like 70-80 bux.

The Astro Mixamp's "Pro" EQ setting is supposed to pretty easily bring the 598's into line with what you want from top-tier soundwhoring headphones, from what I have been reading. Greatly reduces the bass and whatnot, while providing a superior sound experience. And yeah, I'd love some AD700s, but not at the used prices I have been seeing. Edit: Also, the 598s are more than 50% off on Amazon right now.

Ended up trying all of the Top Tier Headsets before settling on the Turtle Beach Elite 800X
Turtle Beach Elite 800X
The feel and weight felt perfect. When you start venturing into long ass gaming sessions the ear cuffs can heat up a bit. Combated this by adjusting while in pre-game lobby. Though in their defense I turned off central AC.
HOLY SHIT...the fact you can completely control this headset via an App is straight fire. Give you a ton of different options you can mess around with to find the before sound quality.
It connects to your phone/tablet via bluetooth. Giving me the opportunity to walk around the house jamming out to music, or simply throw some tunes on while Im warming up // playing solo.
Mic sounds crystal clear, and the fact its completely wireless factors in.
Astro A50s
First off... headset as a whole felt heavy. Entire time I was gaming, two things became noticeable. The top part of the headset, as well as the earcuffs themselves were weighing down.
Told my mic sounded like I was in a wind tunnel which was 10 miles away from the actual headset. Complete let down that the adapter/cable combo provided was made so cheaply compared to the actual headset.
Let me preface this by saying the sound quality as whole was top notch. Jeesus.. the bass was friggan blasting, became overwhelming at times. They gave you three options for sound, however I found only one was worth using.
Wireless frequency was running into issues the entire time. Sound was cutting in and out.
The moment I plugged in an auxiliary cable to jam out to music while playing, a comcast frequency was heard loud and clear lol
SteelSeries H Wireless
Holy shit... these bad boys had the clamping prowess of a bear trap. Gave me a piercing headache within 30 seconds of being thrown on. Didn't even have time to setup the mix-amp before ripping these off.
Customer Service has been an absolute joke. THEY HAVE NO TELEPHONE NUMBER TO CALL. How on earth is this possible in this day and age. Take forever to respond to e-mails/RMAS/etc. Have a 14 day money back guarantee, and waited until the tail end before responding to my request.

Turtle Beach is complete ass. I'm not trusting anything they make again. My first premium headset is Turtle Beach, and it sucked. So I echo this sentiment. This is not to say that they may have improved, since the headset I got is 5+ years old.

However, this doesn't account for the other two headsets that I've had from them that broke very easily (the first one I had, dropped and broke, just like that. The other one, my third TB headset, broke basically because I was wearing it). So far, my P11's are the only ones that have continued to function properly and not break in half because of stupid shit.

Year, durability has to be a top consideration for premium peripherals. The last thing you want is a piece that costs a lot and breaks easily. Heard plenty of horror stories from friends: headsets, controllers, etc. As I mentioned in my earlier posts: after getting the MixAmp, I am now satisfied with just some low end stereo headsets in the $50-60 range. Good enough for my needs and durable (even if not, no sweat to replace). Money saved was going into the new Elite Controller MSFT will start selling on 10/27, but with the recent announcement of button remapping coming soon to standard controllers, looks like I can keep that money as well . Already doing claw grips, difficult to go back doing normal anyway...

Last headset lasted 3/4 years and had no issues till the very end. Ended up grabbing the 2 year warranty from Best Buy. In case of emergency can just show up and have the whole thing replaced for nothing.

Products like the Steelseries, Razer, Turtle Beach, and even Astro headsets are high on style but generally low on actual sound quality. They're like Beats: you'll pay $300 for the name, but the actual hardware is easily bested by a $100 offerings from other, more reputable headphone makers. Hell, even headset offerings from the likes of Sennheiser and Audio Technica fall short of their main headphone line. Half the price for many of these products is the integrated mic, which isn't worth nearly that much.
I recently spent $200 on Sennheiser HD 598 headphones and an AntLion Modmic 4.0. Combine that with the Astro Mixamp I already own (roughly $120 when purchased with the headset, as I did), and I've spent a combined $320 on a surround sound "headset" that is vastly superior to any of the headset offerings from any of these companies, which can routinely push $300.

I'm seriously considering replacing the Mixamp with Schiit Magni 2 amp/DAC combo. The simulated surround sound may be irrelevant given the inherent capabilities of the HD 598s.

To be fair the Beats Solo 2 are actually very competent for their price range according to audiophiles

Oh, I know there have been improvements in the Beats line in the past year or so. It's just an easy dead horse to beat, so to speak.

I'm using almost the same setup, Modmic 4.0 Pro, Senny HD 595, Astro Mixamp 5.8.. The positional audio you get out of it is so far superior to simple stereo sound that it's a major factor on why I do the vast majority of my FPS gaming on console these days. My PC sound card has an ok virtual surround but it's obnoxious to enable/disable for general computer use, not to mention configuring the actual games correctly. I don't think switching to a plain amp makes sense.

Guess I'll be keeping the Mixamp, then!
Edit: one thing I noticed right away with my new setup is that the Mixamp has an easier time driving the Senn HD 598s and Modmic than it does its own Astro headset. I was actually able to turn down the master volume and game/chat mix on my Midamp after switching over.

Any opinions on the Audio Technica ATHADG1? My pc360 is slowly dying. Dead mic and the ear volume controls distort the sound near max audio level.
