About mods: Blue mods are kind of worthless. You will get tons of them. (but never throw them away! they become valuable from 280) Purple mods are where it is at. Those can increase the power level of a gear piece by 5. If you have any purple mods I would advice you to put them on a legendary gear you like. It will help a lot to the road to 280 power. Once you get to level 280 you can trade 3 of the same blue mods for a single legendary mod. That is why you want to keep those. But using one because you feel like it is no biggie. All in all, this is all pretty rare (getting legendary mods or getting legendary gear with a legendary mod on it) and there is a good chance you don't have any of these until you are 265 anyway, so I would not bother too much with this right now. Just save mods and every single legendary.
Infusion is something completely different from modding. Infusion is nothing else than increasing the power level of one piece of gear by using another piece of gear (and destroying that 2nd piece in the process). Dont be afraid to infuse exotics into legendaries though, as you will always have another copy of an exotic in your vault "collection" section. Oh yeah, only legendary and exotic gear can be infused. But you can use blue gear to infuse into the legendarilies or exotics. Infusing costs recources though, and therefore I would strongly advice you to refrain from it until you reach 265 or so. Just use the lower light versions, or simply equip the higher power blue gear, as it doesn't influence your drops in any way. There are more things to think about once one gets to 265+, but for now, just playing any activity will gain you blue gear. And blue gear is what you need the most. Don't infuse too much and don't mod too much. But do inspect each legendary to see if there is a legendary (purple) mod on them. Every legendary gear comes with a mod, and most of those are blue. If one is purple, keep it. That is the most important thing for now. Once you get further we will help you further Grasping the complete picture is both irrelevant and cumbersome at this moment. You will need a couple more sessions to get to 265.
tldr; play the game and keep (and inspect) legendary stuff. Save as much resources as you can for 265. Public events will be quickest way to level up, but anything drops blues so play whatever you like!

I finished the campaign tonight.. Got up to level 220. m.imgur.com/a/h3uPLThis is--by far--the best Power guide I've seen. The one posted previously, which I've used myself, works on the assumption that you'll have amazingly great RNG. You won't. Also, I feel it's kinda vague. Thanks, I had seen that one but couldn't relocate it when I was posting here. I agree, it's good and clear.

"lol The above modding and infusing info really helped and will try to have some patience and do the above. When I get closer to 260/270...i'll dig into this a bit deeper. Basically, if you are looking to be efficient and maximize your near-term ability to reach I high Light/Power level, your strategy should be: Until you hit 260- Do Public Events (triggering the Heroic version using these methods: www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/6z4m9x/reminder_to_activate_heroic_public_events/ ) - Do Lost Sectors in between the Public Events - they are quick, easy, and give similarly good rewards. Find Lost Sectors by looking at your map - they are the double upside down U with a dot in the center. Usually a small cave entrance or an underground tunnel. They also have the same upside down U symbol painted on a rock or wall very close to the entrance when you look around in the "real" world. - I also mixed in doing Strikes just for some variety - they give blues, purples, and yellows. DO NOT use planetary or faction tokens or other turn ins (this includes NOT turning anything into the Gunsmith) - you'll want to use these once you hit 260, because getting from 260 to 265 largely relies on these turn ins. When you hit 260- Go from vendor to vendor and turn in tokens to get purple gear. - If you get any piece of gear with a purple modification (inspect the gear clicking Y and you'll see a purple square with a +5 power if it has a purple mod), SAVE IT. This will occupy your gear slot for a long time - infuse other items INTO this piece of gear using the information in the post above. Hopefully this gets you to 265 fairly quickly. When you hit 265Start completing Milestone turn ins (Flashpoint, Cayde's treasure maps, Crucible Challenge, Nightfall). Also - this is the time to start the Exotic Weapon quests. Mida is easy to get and dropped for me at 287 when my current power level was around 272. Hope that helps.

Awesome stuff Mal. Appreciate it.
I'm going to do the above >260 tonight for a good bit. I'm at 222 now, no campaign to do, so I should be able to just play a few hours and focus on those exact steps.

One other note on Heroic Public Events - don't bother trying to trigger the heroic version if you are the only person around. Chances of success are fairly low. You are better off just finishing the event as the normal version. If one or two other people are around, then go for the Heroic version - the rewards are much better if you can.

It seems like one gets a chest no matter what happens. I have never NOT gotten a chest. Maybe I've been lucky and just beat the event all the time? Or I am a godlike player (no commenting by anyone on that one)

But when you do fail... all you get is glimmer. What you don't get are better drops (engrams, eq, tokens) which is ultimately what you want

Or I am a godlike player (no commenting by anyone on that one) Read the Reddit post I included above about triggering Heroic Events. It is a relatively short post and should answer your questions. EDIT: I'll just post it here, so you don't have to click... Here's what you need to do for each public event: Glimmer ExtractionDuring each glimmer extraction there will be a small device on the ground which is damageable. Destroy 3 of these and heroic mode will activate. It looks like a roundish box and will usually spawn slightly after the mobs. Injection RigAfter each Psion is killed the inside of the bubble will start causing burn damage because of the jets. During this time ports will open on the rig which you can damage. There are 3 tiers you have to destroy to activate the heroic mode top, middle and bottom. This one is pretty tough because you are taking damage and they have a lot of health. Try to find a vehicle to help with the damage. Ether ResupplyDamage the large servitor until it spawns smaller servitors which put a shield on the boss. Kill these smaller servitors when they spawn, there will be a few waves of them and eventually 3 will spawn which should trigger the heroic once all are dead. Make sure to kill them quickly because they can despawn. Disrupt Vex ConstructionThere will be 3 rings on the ground near the objective you have to defend, you can usually follow the light trails coming from the defense point. Stand in them until they reach 100% for all 3 to activate the heroic mode. Devil WalkerEach time you destroy one of the devil walker's legs it will drop a bunch of orbs. These orb are used to unlock the 3 cannons, once all 3 are unlocked it will switch to heroic and spawn a second devil walker. Cabal ExtractionOccasionally a ship will fly near the objective to give support to the waves of enemies. Destroy this ship to activate heroic. Witch RitualAfter you defeat the first 2 witches, there will be 2 shielded stones on both sides of the portal. Stand on the plates again to remove the shields and destroy the stones to activate heroic. Taken BlightThere will be a big shielded bight with several smaller bubbles around it. When you step in and out of the smaller bubbles you can a temporary buff that allows you to damage the central blight. When you do enough damage, heroic will will be activated and a yellow mob will spawn.

Good lord.
People who don't have access to places like Den's forum . . . how can they even play this game? There's no instruction manual with this. Even if the stuff is posted all over the web, one has to know to look for it. The above is a perfect example. I would have NEVER known about the above, let alone even look it up. I mean, why would I even think there were triggers to set off the Heroic event? Seriously, most solo people playing this game will never know about this stuff.

Hilariously that series gets praised constantly for not holding players' hands, yet any other game that does that is either a DS ripoff or bad design. Just check Reddit if you want D2 info. Everything you could possibly need is there.

I always have a fun read on Reddit when Destiny players think shooters with a longer time to kill are more skilful than those with a shorter time to kill. Would not be surprised if decent Counter Strike players ended up beating the top Destiny players on PC tournaments if they are even interested.

Destiny 2 was designed with that very thing in mind too. There are a lot of secrets, and you probably won't solve them all on your own. It is one of the things I personally like about this game. But I can understand others don't. Got to have good clan mates if you don't like scouring the internet for answers "The designers worked around "seven pillars", seven core principles which ensure that the game is accessible to both casual, novice players and experienced veterans of first-person shooters and MMOs.[28][29][55] This includes integration with social media, allowing players to gain information about new quests and their friends' activities."

I always have a fun read on Reddit when Destiny players think shooters with a longer time to kill are more skilful than those with a shorter time to kill. Would not be surprised if decent Counter Strike players ended up beating the top Destiny players on PC tournaments if they are even interested. My thoughts. A good fps player is going to be good no matter what game they play. That said . . . . people who emphasize their fps Destiny skills are probably blowing a lot of smoke up people's asses because Destiny is a crappy game to brag about doing well in. For the main reason that Destiny offers more advantages in terms of "pay to win", or maybe I should say 'level to win'. A lot of the players doing well, some of that 'doing well' is due to the player having better guns, better armor and all the advantages that come with level differences. Then there is the whole issue of playing with a group against randoms. Something that has always existed in other games like Call of Duty. Last night, tried two crucible competitive playlist games and it was a disaster. Ran into a group playing together, my squad sucked. I went like 10-12 and my side got crushed. What did that prove? Nothing. Let's not even get into the issue of XIM controllers and other controller/media products. At the end of the day, people bragging about being better in a FPS game is like someone bragging about being the tallest guy at a party of midgets. Nothing to write home about.

Question all:
I'm 268 and I deliberately set it up so yesterday, I could cash in a lot of redeemables to get some major legendary engrams. I think I got 11 of them in all. Thought for sure, I be in the 270's.
Every single legendary, except 1, dropped at 265. And I went from 268.3 to like 268.6.
What am I doing wrong? Is my 268 artificially inflated from the +5 modifiers, and really, it's 263?

Legendary (and blue) gear drops ~5 below your light level after 265. So untill you get to 270 or so standard blue and purple engrams are not very usefull for you.
This is a rough guide for you:
Level up 1st character to 265 --> do exotic quest for primary and energy weapons --> earn powerfull gear --> (if this upgrades your armor you can go for more exotic quests) --> change character --> Level up with weapons from first character --> your 2nd character will get higher armor pieces --> gain higher weapons by quests --> go to 3rd character etc etc etc.
The most important thing in leveling above 265 is timing the exotic quests. Every single character can get 5 high level weapons from these quests.
1 scout 2 side arms 1 hand cannon 1 SMG
Don't forget you can infuse these weapons in the other slot as well (aka kinetic to energy and other way around).
I got my first character to 280 in the first week by obsessing over this. I did the mida and sturm quest and infused the mida into an energy scout, giving me a 288 energy weapon and 292 kinetic weapon. These weapons drop ~10 above your current light level, unlocking higher gear (especially from powerfull engrams). Also, don't forget to save the highest primary exotic you get, even if you don't like it. Because legendary kinetic mods are rare. My highest gear has been Sturm (piece of crap) + drank (meh) for the longest time. I never used them but they still count for your power drops.
Tldr; Every time your primary and energy weapon are not the highest piece of gear by at least 5 levels, do an exotic quest. Rinse and repeat.

Gotcha.... so exotic quests and level up Polo2.
When you say "These weapons drop ~10 above your current light level, unlocking higher gear (especially from powerfull engrams)." does that include the +5 modifier?

The game does NOT count purple mods when assessing your light level for drops. So the game treats join as being 5 levels lower in each slot you have a purple mod. This is why it is critical to save every piece of a gear with a purple mod and use that as your leveling gear. These purple modded pieces are what you will infuse to go up.

I just buy lots of random blue gear mods from Banshee because I re-earn the Glimmer pretty quickly. I did this before hitting 280 so I ended up having a few legendary purple mods I could be straight away and I completed my own challenge of being raid ready (level 280) without resorting to using duplicate classes Also, I completed the raid this morning with my regular crew and I enjoyed it so I'm levelling up my Warlock fairly quickly so I get rewards for two characters. Then I will start my Titan soon after.

So, I've stuck my toe into the Crucible waters. Pretty much goes like this: queue for Crucible; you and a bunch of randos face off against a preformed team; get your face smashed in while trying to keep a 1 K/D; do enough that you complete the weekly challenge.

I know many did not like D1 crucible, but I thought it was okay and was pretty tolerable to play solo. D2 has not been enjoyable solo. Because they have made PvP very team dependent, having crappy random teammates really hurts. Generally I try to see which direction the group wants to go only to see my 3 others teammates go 3 different directions... then everyone dies to the tightly coordfinated team of 4 who we got matched against. Lame. Also, the competitive playlist gave me AIDS.

Yeah, Nessus grinding has pretty much melted my brain, and I haven't even done that much of it. In a lot of ways it's a step back from D1 post TTK IMO. I liked progression much better in that era, lots of quests with checklists and things to figure out how to do efficiently. Strikes were fun and relevant.
I know the problem, we need to keep giving them more money so they can fill out the game some more!
