The MW3 shield is doo-doo because of the out-of-this-world firstperson-thirdperson de-sync. In MW2 the shield was good because firstperson and thirdperson was synced well together.
In MW3, that's why you can be looking right at someone and he kills you. It's because his first person model is actually to the side of you, but the thirdperson model (what you see) is right in front of you.
Why CoD's netcode works like this I'll never know. I'd rather have everything determined by the thirdperson model. Or at least make third person and first person more in sync, because it currently renders the shield pointless.

Speaking of the whole first-person third-person thing; as a sound-whore I hate it when I hear (or see) someone reloading, when in actual fact he's already finished the reload because he has SoH. The first-person animation and sounds are sped up, but the third-person animation and sounds aren't. I go out expecting to catch him whilst he's vulnerable when really he's already ADS back on the doorway again. Gets me more than you'd expect... There are quite a few problems with the first-person third-person coding.

There are tons of issues that arise from the bad de-sync. You can see people reloading and still somehow be shooting at you. You can see a guy stunned with his arms over his face and shoot you. You can literally be shot by someone not even looking at you. It's the most frustrating and crappy net-code I have ever seen in a game. Nothing is properly synced.
See 2:00 mark. It's gross.

The reason for the "lag" of the character model is that anti-lag is working. Now, the factor. Even though all players can now shoot what they see, where they shoot from still remains ahead of that model, where they see themselves - where and when they tell the server they've fired. With a difference in connection speed/quality, a player can turn a corner and shoot the head off of an enemy before the enemy even sees him turn the corner (leading to a lot of "omg howd he hit me so quick hax" and "wtf I got behind cover how did i die"). This works both ways, a good connection against a bad, bad against good, bad against bad. Of course, if both guys have a good connection, they have far less time to act before their model exposes itself, but that gap still exists as long as ping is not zero. In the situation of bad connections, the aggressive player always has the advantage. Turn a corner and lay waste to the enemy before he has a chance to retaliate... before he has something to retaliate against.Playing all-out aggressive will get you killed by the defense, but playing with the understanding of this seperation of your "weapon" and your "body" based on connection, considering it when making a move or waiting for someone else to move in will passively improve your methods of defense and offense.

Halo networking is beautiful. Still recall manageable lag in that (comparative to ordinary CoD day) while having a 300ms ping in MW3.

Halo Reach how ever was the best netcode I've ever played. Perfect sync, great anti-lag, and it was epic at hiding lag. It was really great.

moop do you pc? I think the networking for halo 3 was awful on PC. Personally, I have never noticed anything wrong with the Xbox version.

I do recall quicker host swaps in halo 3 than in reach. Of course, I could just be imagining things.

Imo no way for the shield to be effective if you can just friggin' OHK knife through it.

I think the networking for halo 3 was awful on PC. I can imagine the PC version of Halo 3 having terrible lag issues, seeing as how it doesn't exist.

I find it funny but sad that MW2 trumps MW3 in this regard. I fully agree with the general sentiment about Halo: Reach. Say what you will about Bungie's design choices, but those guys were amazing from a development standpoint. I haven't played every FPS on the Xbox, but out of those I have played, lag has the least presence in Reach by a wide margin.

^This was something I thought about too. It makes a huge difference in the stability of a game when individuals can and cannot join. In Halo, individuals are analysed based solely on how good a host they are in the certain lobby. In CoD, individuals are analysed for that, and also for how well their network would be able to adapt to additional stress (new players). Since both of these characteristics are important, the host system in CoD may choose a player who does not have the optimal host for everyone in the lobby, but can adapt to new pressure. So the lobby will not fart out when people join, but you get occasional bouts of lag.

I'm gonna shamelessly bump this thread, and hope someone decides to ask IW about the balance pass.

Increase reload speed, it's too slow! [smart-ass comment] Surely an increased reload time would make the reload even slower [/smart-ass comment]
