Talking about public events, I need some pointers on "preventing Vex sacrifice". This is the only public event type that I don't have a high gold finish success rate. The rest I can easily do even going solo. As a result, Venus is my least favorite patrol planet, but I need to farm spirit blooms real soon.
Regarding public events occurrences: I am using "Destiny Timers" Android App and its predictions on event timing are fairly good for all planets. I no longer use publicdestinyevents.com as the info there sucks in comparison.

Those can be tough, probably the second worst only to the Minotaur that teleports to the last checkpoint.
Assuming there are other people there, ignore the direction that most of the enemies come from. Generally, it's not getting overrun by enemies that's the issue, it's the one that sneaks through with no one noticing. If there are a couple of teammates covering the main direction, just ensure the back routes are safe.

3) Planet materials farming; You'll find out soon enough that there are no such thing as having too many of these. Even if you do (say you have a shit load of spin metal), you can trade them for glimmer, and buy green armor/weapons just to dismantle into armor materials and weapon parts, which you'll also find out soon enough that there are no such things as having too many of them. I have over 1200 Spinmetal leaves but I can redeem them at the Vanguard Quartermaster for instant Vanguard Marks. I think they increase your rep too. I would advise against redeeming these unless they are Spinmetal leaves because the rest are less abundant, and farming Relic Iron at Scablands can be a tad tedious and you will get dry runs from time to time anyway.

I didn't know you get marks and rep for turning it in. I can probably get my boots right away then! Wow Good to know. So far I've gathered it and never once had anything that uses spinmetal, including my legendary chest piece and gloves, (they use helium). I might as well use it, I can always farm more.

iw5000: if your goal is to hit level 30 on your Warlock, you should really consider tear down your other 2 characters and rebuild them as Warlocks. A little investment up front (1 Sunday and you are done), and you can then do 6 raids per week, all with Raid drop chances! With 1.5 weeks away from CoD:AW, this is the best way to get it done before that. So I did this Witty. I tore down my Level 9 Hunter and started up a new Warlock. Just seemed the prudent thing to do. I can get this new Warlock to level 20, and then already have Two Legendary armor pieces plus a Queens chest piece, all three fully leveled up. No need to swap, can just give them to this new character, making it instantly level 27 or 28. Pretty much skip the entire level 20 to 28 process. I can now double down on my raid chances/odds too. Have it ready to go for next week, to give it one last shot. I kept my level 14 Titan. I would like to at least try to get this up high. Kind of sucks getting rid of the Hunter. I already had two Legendary Hunter armor pieces ready and waiting. Oh well.

Is there a good trick for Spinmetal? I have been going into Bounty mode...> Great Divide > Rocket yard > then doing the perimeter loop in the small rooms. One 2 min loop typically gets me 6 to 10 Spinmetal pieces. Is there something better? There's a loop on Mars, bounty mode, > Scablabs > running the three pods and three side rooms...typically gets a person 3 to 4 chests, giving 6 to 8 iron relic pieces per 2 min loop.

I just pick them up when waiting for public events to spawn in Mothyards and The Divide and do some bounties and beacon missions, and sometimes when I am fooling around in The Steppes. I use my sniper rifles to scout for them sometimes and I get used to knowing possible locations. I have also been no-lifing the game and I don't always upgrade weapons so quickly, in case I regret the expenditure of upgrading them but you should net a fair amount yourself though. I don't really visit Rocketyard unless a beacon mission tells me. Recently I do the Nightfall fairly soon after the refresh so I am usually done for the main work when farming Spinmetal.

The Rocketyard has a very fast loop, in terms of Spinmetal per minute farming.

Honestly, it's like the Ellimiate the target one... it's damn hard to do solo. Every time I've done it, I've been fortunate to either have had help right away or help pass though and help. I've done it twice solo and got a silver and a gold The silver, I used the Shadow Price and impacted them down, sparingly using my grenades and void bomb until the end. The gold, I used TDYK handcannon and just plain got lucky. That's what it came down to; I OSK'd everything in sight and for 5 minutes, I could do no wrong.... I could aim at the sky and OSK something. My advice: bring a friend

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned this, but it hasn't been added to the original post. Another way to get ascendant materials is through immediate rewards for public events. For a gold completion on a public event you have a chance to get an immediate reward (on planet, not from the postmaster) that can be 1-2 ascendant materials. Since the most recent update (1.0.3) my current data on 3 characters shows a 1 in 3 chance of getting an immediate ASC MAT reward. There is a weekly cap on this type of reward though and it extends beyond just the public events. I'm very confident that there is a 5 ASC MAT cap for on planet rewards/loot per week. Since the update it appears to be more common to occasionally find some ASC MAT in chests (previously it would seem you would only find the occasional mote or coin). Since before the update and after, my characters all stop getting ASC MAT rewards for public events once they have reached the weekly cap of 5, even if I found one or two of those 5 in a chest.
The original post also doesn't mention that the daily reward at the postmaster for a gold finish on a public event can also be coins/motes. So you can't count on getting 7 ASC MAT a week from postmaster rewards. It's more like 2-3. Lastly, I'm sure some of you folks are like me and you've read or figured out you can get more weapon/armor parts for dismantling a piece that is unlocked with XP even if you never spend anything to actually activate the perks/upgrades. This works most efficiently on green/uncommon items since it boosts their return to 2-3 parts vs one part. You can do it on blue/rares as well, but it's not very efficient. For those of you who are so inclined, opening the daily reward at the postmaster is worth 2500 XP (same as a 50 rep bounty). Also opening a faction/vanguard/crucible/ reward package from the postmaster is worth XP (I believe those are 5000xp).
So, to summarize, the probability of getting an immediate ASC MAT reward (could be one or two MAT, but usually one) for a gold finish on a public event seems to be about one in three. And the weekly cap for ASC MAT found on planet FROM ANY SOURCE is conclusively 5 per week. That's a nice boost per character on weekly ASC MAT (14 guaranteed for 7 daily heroics, about an AVG of 2-3 for daily postmaster public event rewards, plus (assuming you do enough public events) 5 immediate public event rewards or loot chest finds. If you increase your public events from one a day (for the postmaster reward) to two a day, you should be close to the 5 ASC MAT cap every week, although luck is luck and you might need to squeeze a few more in. I keep track on a notepad to know when I've hit my cap. Playing 14 gold finish events a week will also get you 70 marks (56 on planet and 14 from postmaster) which is more than enough to buy a piece of legendary armor and dismantle it for 2-3 more ASC MAT (assuming you don't need the armor or are saving up for a weapon of course).
Hope this helps some folks. Took me a while to nail down what was going on with the immediate public event rewards. Dont forget that you don't have to do patrol for public events either. They will come in on strikes, story missions, daily heroic stories, doesn't matter. Just don't upset matchamking teammates by appearing to abandon the mission to wait for one. And all the timer websites and apps help tremendously. This is grinding, but it's efficient grinding, and I always try to knock out my 10 majors bounties by doing public events when it's possible.

I added a new row "Public event gold - RNG right after finish", to reflect this info.

With the newest 1.1 patch: exotic weapon/armors no longer require Ascendant Materials. They now need 1 "exotic shard" at the very last upgrade, which can be obtained from breaking down unwanted exotics, or purchase from Xur at 7 coins a piece.
Table in OP updated.

Post 12/1/14 update, I am no longer getting daily postmaster rewards for the first Public Event of the day. Not sure yet if this is a glitch or this is simply a change to the system, but I would wager it is the later. For the most part, I'm in favor of the majority of changes in this update, but I really liked those daily public event postmaster rewards.

Or for it to be updated as there is still a lot of good info there, just in need of some tweaks. Barring that I think we need a new thread, at least for the loot and light tables and such.

wittyscorpionIn regards to the Stats Table 2 - Starting Light, Max Light & upgrades by armor rarity. I have Rare armor that has a max light amount of 21, so that note that says "best ones can reach 15" is incorrect.

Given the changes brought forth by the DLC will you be updating your OP so that a relatively new player like I can strategize how to proceed with regards to the armors and leveling up?

Given the changes brought forth by the DLC will you be updating your OP so that a relatively new player like I can strategize how to proceed with regards to the armors and leveling up? I thought about it, but since I did not have the experience to start after DLC I am not sure I can give it enough justice (e.g.: I am now completely ignorant about what "rare" items are like). The OP was built on my first hand experience of going from level 1 to level 30 so I was able to say that I know what I am talking about for every point

The OP was built on my first hand experience of going from level 1 to level 30 so I was able to say that I know what I am talking about for every point The exact light numbers and some other details have changed, but it's the same basic idea. There's not really much strategizing to do, just play through the game and you'll get there. 1. Play through the story, do bounties, ect. to earn XP until you hit level 20. 2. At this point, you'll probably have a piece or two of rare (blue) armor that may or may not contain light. As you keep playing, you'll get engram drops from enemies that when decoded will turn into more armor pieces with potentially more light. The more light the better. Unfortunately I too have no idea what the new max light on rare gear is, but 19 or 20 would make sense. 4 pieces at 19 light would be 76 light, aka level 26. EDIT: Saw you had some with 21, in which case 22 max would make more sense. 4 x 22 = 88, aka level 27. 3. Also at level 20, you can start earning Marks. Use these to buy legendary weapons/armor from vendors. Vendor armor starts at 24 light and maxes out at 33 light. You will need Ascendant shards to upgrade these all the way. 4 pieces at 33 light equals 132 light, which is level 31. The fastest way to earn Vanguard marks is through daily story missions (mark reward depends on difficulty level, once per day), Vanguard strike playlist (mark reward varies depending on difficulty level, no daily limit), and public events (4 Marks per completion, no daily limit). Crucible marks are earned through playing in the crucible (3 per win, 2 per loss, no daily limit). You can earn up to 100 of each type every week, but there is also an inventory cap of 200 of each type of Mark. So at most at any one time you can have 200 Vanguard Marks and 200 Crucible Marks, for 400 Marks total. 4. Don't worry too much about getting Vault of Glass raid armor. It has a max light of 30, and is now inferior to armor that can be bought from Tower vendors. That's not to say the Vault of Glass isn't worth doing -- it's probably the best content available in the game, and is also the best source of Ascendant shards that you need for upgrading vendor armor. Level 26 or 27 is a good time to try VoG on normal. Level 29 or 30 is needed for hard mode. 5. Exotic armor and Crota's End raid armor start at 30 light with a max of 36 when fully upgraded. These are the best pieces available, and what you're really working towards. 4 of these gives you 144 light, the requirement for level 32 and the maximum level at this time. Exotic armor can be bought from Xur in exchange for strange coins, and requires an exotic shard (which can also be bought from Xur) to fully upgrade. Raid armor requires Radiant shards to upgrade, which can only be earned in Crota's End at this time. Realistically you need to be at least level 30 to attempt CE on normal. Hard mode isn't available yet, but you'll need to be at least level 31, with 32 being recommended. Hope all that helps. I'm sure I've missed some stuff too. Any questions, just ask!

My favorite part here is the tables so you know how much light everything is and what are all the ways to earn various rewards.
