I have been disgustingly unlucky with that chest... I cheesed it so much before that I think the game is biting me on the butt. Both normal and hard last night, when bountying in the abyss, it didn't work. Granted, I didn't try that hard (mainly because I didn't want to die because I had a bunch of death reset bounties) Maybe I'll try again tonight

just do it solo (....and you will die a few times trying, got to deal with that) The chest will almost always appear in one of the first three rooms, usually within 3 or 4 attempts.
And then you can just run the entire stretch solo, get the loot drop at the end of the Abyss bridge. There's a chance. gear and shards.
and then try to solo the next section, the bridge. There's another loot drop. Gear and shards.
Then the thrall hallway...more shards.
Deathsinger....that's a bitch solo. Might not want to waste time there.
all in all, one can get a ton of stuff solo, doing normal crota.

I know where the first one is... tbh, I didn't even know there were other rooms. So that's likely... I just have to find them and hope. Is is guaranteed to be in 1 of the 3? And then you can just run the entire stretch solo, get the loot drop at the end of the Abyss bridge. There's a chance. gear and shards. I zerged and got 9... that's my record. So that's not really likely either.... fuggin thrall holes and then try to solo the next section, the bridge. There's another loot drop. Gear and shards. Nope... the only way I have ever crossed the bridge before is to stand and snipe when someone is sitting on the other side. I don't even know how to do it legit with 6 people, much less me on my own. Then the thrall hallway...more shards. Run down a hallway? Full of enemies, killing shreakers, and have to get to the end within a time limit? Nopanopanope Deathsinger....that's a bitch solo. Might not want to waste time there. Nah... it wouldn't be a waste... can't waste something when it's a nopidity nope nope all in all, one can get a ton of stuff solo, doing normal crota. Maybe I could as a ninja hunter... but as a warlock... nope. 1st chest or bust!!!!

If you have a warlock, you can do all the above quite easily. If I can do it, you can do it. Seriously, I am on the record as being one of THE worst platform jumping game players ever (see Mario games)

Easiest way is to just keep wiping until it's in the first door. If you have another person with you, you can rotate all of your characters and get it.

Wait a sec.... hold the phone So if I'm running it with you: (as an example) I get the chest with MarkoI, you stay in the raid with the open chest, do I just: 1) Go to orbit, leaving the team as MarkoI, 2) switch characters to MarkoII, 3) then (so long as you don't leave) I join the fireteam with MarkoII, 4) enter the raid... then come and get the mats again out of the chest?

Here's the map again. snip Thanks for this... so... do I zerg and hope I don't get killed? Or do I jump on a rock so they can't reach me, kill em all, then jump back down?

Yes. It just has to be on Normal mode so you can be revived. The same is true for the chest right before Ir Yut. It's also why we save the Gorgon's Maze checkpoint every week, to quickly get that chest on all three characters in a matter of minutes.

Here's the map again. The chest rotates amongst all the rooms. There's seven rooms. So the math is easy. 43% change of the chest being in the first three rooms each time. And I say 'three', because it's pretty easy with a warlock, to check all three rooms on one run-through. Run, look for the light. No light? Keep going to the second and so on. You do this three times, it's almost always there. You'll get it. Once you get the chest, wipe...then go do a solo run.
With a Warlock, the way to do a solo run, is to use SunBreakers and two solar grenades. The solar grenades give you a 'bubble' to hide in, where no one can touch you. With Sunbreakers, it extends the duration to like 9 seconds. One grenade allows you all the time you need, to reduce your darkness buff at a lamp post. Just max your discipline, and time your grenades during the run. Typically, your first grenade will be at the 3rd or 4th lamppost. Toss it, stand in the MIDDLE of the grenade, and blow up the thrall. You can then typically get to #7 up the hill, and toss a second grenade. That then gets you easily past 8, and then race past the knight on #9. Typcially, around 10, 11, or 12, ...that will be the trickiest part. I sometimes I have to do self revive to flood the floor with solars. But once past #13...it's all good. You can bypass #15, race to the pad, set it off...and then toss a grenade right next to the jump rock. Why? It keeps thrall off it, so you can jump on it. It's not hard to get on the rock, but if you haven't done it a lot, it's easy to mistime the first few attempts. Solar will protect you, in the event of a fail.
Then just duck, scoot to the edge of the rock...lamp blows up. Then shoot the ogre. Done.

You can solo Deathsinger? Might try that actually. Shouldn't be any more difficult than playing Horde on Rustlung on insane difficulty in Gears.

the above is overkill, swapping characters in and out.
Just take your own character, drop into the Abyss. Keep checking the first three rooms, wipe if needed, and it will turn up. It's like 2 or 3 minutes, tops. Then repeat with your next character.
Doing this with two people is overkill. Finding the chest is ridiculously easy.

You can still do it. You still have solar grenades, and you can still equip two of them. You just need to tighten up your game just a little, as Sunbreakers make it ridiculously easy. Normal solars still have 5 seconds of radius.
And as far as the above jump...sunbreakers aren't needed. Just copy the above.

You can solo Deathsinger? Might try that actually. Shouldn't be any more difficult than playing Horde on Rustlung on insane difficulty in Gears. Yes, it can be done. I'm not really good at it, so my advice isn't probably the best. I'm like 1 per 5 attempts maybe? Maybe lower? The problem is I give up pretty quick, as I have to burn heavy ammo synthesis after every other fail.... and I hate doing that. So after four or five fails, I quit. But there are plenty of others who nail it much more consistently, look for the videos. Getting both Wizards and Shriekers isn't hard. One person can get this done fairly easy. The hard part of it...is doing it fast. You have to nail all four quickly, so you aren't that rushed when it comes time to hit the deathsinger. If the liturgy thing starts by the time you moving in on the DS...it's probably to late. So most of one's trial & error stuff, is going to be going towards shaving off 10 to 20 seconds of the kill time on the wizrds/shriekers. Find your pattern, how to save time, don't miss your sniping shots. Tip. The crota scout rifle makes a great finishing weapon after unloading all your Icebreaker clips. Don't wait for it to recharge...use the scout rifle to finish. You get that 20 seconds of time shaved off, you have a solid shot. What has also helped me, (warlock) was being able to save my self revive for the DS final attack. Launch your missiles. 3, 4, or however many, then if you die, self revive and then spam fusion grenades on the DS. It helps to do so from the upper high ledge in the DS room. Get up there to do it. Finish. If I had a Gjallorhorn, the above would be 10x easier. I am doing it without it. One Gjallorhorn shot takes out a shrieker. You need two shots with the HoC (or one shot, plus a sniper shot).

You could equip weapons and armor that help charge your grenades if you have any. I haven't made it very far, myself. But first 3 rooms shouldn't be too hard. Also here's another map I really like from reddit.

First three rooms is easy. But either way, it doesn't matter. Just check the first two. If it's not there, die. Reset. Repeat. I have had to rarely go past 4 or 5 attempts, before getting the chest.
Awesome map!!!
another tip. When soloing, you can skip lamp post #15. The next to last one. If you do a full recharge on lamp #14...go straight line to lamp #16. You avoid some thrall, and then can directly trigger the bridge.

That's the kind of map Destiny 2.0 should add to the game, for orientation challenged players like me Until I see this map today, I never had a complete mental picture of what the forest is like. Could use 1 for Gorgon's maze as well...

I do love that map. I haven't seen an equivalent for the Gorgon's maze... or anywhere for that matter. I did see a site a while back with some impressive top down renders of the exterior areas in the game, but I don't think it had the maze and I can't remember the site.
hmmm... Oh and I've seen CE done in Minecraft. heh Not sure that counts, but could do...

As for CE I've also seen it suggested to take a left at lamp 6 (just at top of first ramp) and skip directly to 9... or 10. I don't recall. I haven't done it, but it seems like a reasonable idea.
