Aidsx3 got me into it.
I've gotten 5 of my friends into it, in turn. This game is addictive and accessible and I have no problem throwing my money at it.
Looking forward to getting into 2014 as well sometime...

I did download it when it was available, just haven't done anything with it yet, I haven't been playing xbox much lately. Been enjoying the waning days of Summer, and Football.(egghand) No game really holds my interest at the moment. I'm thinking about being silver for a while.

MTG 2014 expansion comes out today adding 5 new decks. It also has, as part of the base game, a Sealed mode instead of Planechase, where you are given booster packs of cards and you create a 40 card deck from the random cards you get. People seem to prefer 2013 to 2014, I'm pretty indifferent since I usually just play a lot with the black decks and not much with others.

People prefer 2013 to 2014 because 2014 is pretty bad from a balance perspective. I haven't played with the expansion yet, but of all the decks in the game at release there are only three you can use if you want to win (one of which is the zombie deck, which might explain your indifference). All three happen to be pretty braindead aggro decks, and there's no deck with enough control to keep them in check. If one of the five new decks is multicolor and contains some number of wrath effects that might change, but if not illusions zombies and weenies are going to keep running everything over probably.

no, Gamble...that victory was badass. FFA 1 life comeback vs. a dude with 60+ life and multiple fliers using only your straight-out-the-box pack instinct deck.

Or, just pay a dollar to fully unlock a deck. MTA FTW

Okay, just one hour in campaign has been immensely helpful, but it's deliberately slow unlocking scheme for the sake of MTA is a bit of a put-off. I might do it though, considering the time involved vs the cost of 1 dollar seems alright.
For the informed, can you unlock all the decks, or is there at least one behind a paywall? Wiki wasn't very helpful or I didn't know where to look.

You can grind all the decks you have. Some decks were released post-launch as dlc, you'll obviously have to pay for those. None of the cards can only be unlocked by paying the dollar.

So, their plan worked like a charm. I'm hooked. A few of my buddies and I bought some event decks (I bought strength of selesnya...) and split a deckbuilder kit. We are now meeting every week and are attempting to go to a local FNM in addition. I've been watching protour magic vids nonstop too... and buying cards on the cheap... 1 cent a piece plus bundle shipping is nice... The major bummer is that I pretty much have the Dragon Maze champ's deck fully constructed, but of course I'm missing the crucial playset of moneycards (40$ each..lol no) that completely disrupt blue control (voice of resurgence). Still having fun for a filthy casual.

The Pro Tours have pretty awesome production quality, the World Pro Tour a few months back was really impressive. Personally I've been constructing a Commander deck (99 cards, only 1 copy of each card that isn't a basic land, 1 Legendary creature as your Commander who is recastable after death/exile with an incrementally increasing mana cost) and it's a ton of fun to brew up different strategies and synergies. It's also a multiplayer focused format so if you have a couple of friends you might like it even more than 60 card decks. Having a Commander you can build an entire strategy/theme around is great, and since it's a slower format you can get away with playing a lot more high CMC cards than normal. EDIT: Forgot, the preconstructed Commander 2013 decks are coming out this Friday. 5 100 card decks here. Singletons typically aren't that useful in Standard/Modern decks, but you can look through all the cards for stuff you might like and pick up a playset, or just grab them to try Commander out. Be aware that not all the cards are usable in all formats (IE: Commander Tower is Commander only, Sol Ring banned in most formats), but for casual play should be fine. Also keep in mind for FNM that most of the players that go have their decks tuned to specific formats, so if you tried to play a game of Standard with a Dragon's Maze deck it wouldn't fly, same as if you tried to play a game of Modern with cards from pre-8th Edition.

Commander is fun but expensive to play if you want to win. Lots of people don't play that format to win though, casual as it is.

Can someone help me out here? What format do you want to play and what's your budget? I just want to see what I can get for say... 40 buck with taxes? I'm not sure if duel decks are any good, if I should buy something like a deckbuilder's toolkit, or just buy a bunch of booster packs and see where I can go from there. The latter is probably a bad idea; I want to know what gets me the most cards for my money, and if that's a good idea or not. I mean, I don't want to end up paying 40 bucks for 600 land cards or something ridiculous.

I mean, I don't want to end up paying 40 bucks for 600 land cards or something ridiculous. Before any of that you need to decide what format to play. Buying sealed product for anything other than limited formats is not good value for your money. If you want to play any constructed formats (the ones where you build a deck yourself with your own cards) buying singles is the way to go, money wise. Which singles to buy depends on the format, but $40 isn't going to buy a competitive deck in any of them. TCGplayer is an online store aggregation site and a good way to look at prices. In particular, they post decklists from recent events complete with prices for all the cards in the deck. For example magic.tcgplayer.com/db/deck_search_result.asp?Location=Pro+Tour+Theroshere are some lists from a pro tour tournament last month, along with where they placed. Click on any of them to see the list, and look at the top for the total prices. The winning "mono"blue devotion list would cost ~$275 to build at a minimum (buying each card at the cheapest price it could be found online, which might mean from multiple stores) and pushing $400 if you don't shop around. The Death and Taxes list that won the last Legacy Grand Prix magic.tcgplayer.com/db/deck.asp?deck_id=1117368costs ~$885 if you jew shop and over a grand otherwise. Those are the two most popular constructed formats, with Modern coming next, which probably costs something in between those. With that said, MtG is a really fun game to just play at a NOPE table with your buddies for lols, and you don't need to spend a lot of money for that. The xbox game that this thread is about is also a good way to play the game on the cheap. If you want to play competitively but not pay a lot you might consider limited formats, Draft in particular. The rules are complicated enough I won't bother posting them unless you ask, but you're paying per event, usually $12-15 bucks. You also get to keep the cards you draft in addition to whatever you win, so Draft is a good format for anyone who wants to play a "real" format and get into the game without dropping a g up front.

Oh, that's what you meant by format. I probably should have mentioned sooner that I'm just in it for casual play, but that's not to say I have no interest in knowing more about the competitive scene. I don't plan on 'going pro', I just figured out how turns work in this game for crying out loud =b.

I had a ton of fun doing drafts with a small group of Magic players I went to school with. I always lost, but it was the experience that mattered to me.

If you have a venue nearby that does drafts (WotC has a tool on their website to find them) I would recommend doing that. For 12-15 bucks you get to keep 3 boosters worth of product, plus participation in a little 3 round mini-tournament. Different places have different prize pools, but depending on the split you typically stand to win ~5 more boosters if you do well. You also get to rub shoulders with other people who play (and who might trade you for something you draft... just don't get ripped off. The internet is your friend).

So, for anyone interested...here is my cheapo standard decklist that I am taking to FNMs. I'm winning consistently within my growing circle of MTG friends and my local FNM. The best thing is I made this deck for under 50 dollars.
So... I have made some very specific choices here. The store I'm going to has JUST opened. The only players there can't afford super amazing decks and mostly run speedy agro with splinters or white/red or things based off the new theros event deck (white/blue heroic). This works to my advantage since my biggest weakness is esper control and mono blue until I can nab some voice of resurgence... so it is a good thing that makes up 0% of that store's metagame. This deck is designed from the ground up to murder aggro of any color...while being quite aggro itself. Also all of my populate stuff (populate puts a copy onto your field of a token already on your field) is instant speed...which is terrific. My other weakness is flying stuff which is why I am considering some judge's owls or w/e they are called.
Lands 24:
11 Forest (will cut 2/2 for Shockland if I can get some) 8 Plains (will cut 2/2 for Shockland if I can get some) 1 Grove of the Guardian - Tap to add one colorless mana or tap 1 green 1 white and 3 any and sacrifice grove of guardian and tap two untapped creatures you control and put an 8/8 token with vigilance on the field (considering cutting, but games I get to him are hilarious and blowouts. 4 copies of 8/8 tokens with vigilance...WHAT) 4 white/gteen guildgate
(4 Costs) 4 Advent of the Wurm - Instant->5/5 green trample token(1 white 2 green 1 any)
(3 Costs) 3 Rootborn Defenses - Instant->populate->all my stuff is indestructible this turn (1 white 2 any) 3 Boon Satyr - Creature 4/2 ->Flash Betow -> bestow creature for 4/2 for 2 green 3 any (2 green 1 any) 2 Unflinching Courage - Enchantment Aura -> +2/+2 lifelink/trample (1 green 1 white 1 any)...for when opponent is tapped out...can seal games 1 Frontline Medic - 3/3 Creature -> Counter target spell with (x) in cost unless controler pays )3) mana. If this creature attacks with 2 others all my creatures are indestructible this turn
(2 Costs) 2 Imposing Sovereign - 2/1 Creature -> creatures opponent's control enter tapped (1 white 2 any) 3 Druid's Deliverance - Instant -> I take no damage this turn-> populate (1 green 2 any) 2 Viru-Ghazi Guildmage - creature 2/2 -> pay 4 any 1 green 1 white to summon 3/3 green token. pay 2 any 1 green 1 white to populate (1 green 1 white) 4 Selesnya Charm - Instant -> choose one - creature gets +2/+2 this turn or exile creature with power 5 or more or put a 2/2 white creature token on field (1 green 1 white) 4 Call of the Conclave - Sorcery -> Put a 3/3 green creature token on the battlefield (1 white 1 green)
(1 Cost) 2 god's Willing - instant -> Target creature you control gains protection from color of your choice for this turn -> scry 1 (1 white) 3 Dryad Militant - 2/1 Creature -> If instant or sorcery would be put into a graveyard from anywhere exile it (1 white or green) 3 Experiment One - 1/1 Creature -> Evolve and remove 2 +1/+1 counters from Experiment One to regenerate
Sideboard
The sideboard is in flux but here are some certainties
4 Centaur Healer - creature 3/3 -> heal for 3 (1 white 1 green 1 any) 3 Sundering Growth - instant -> destroy enchantment or artifact then populate (2 green or white) 4 (forget name) -Instant -> destroy flying then gain 2 life (1 green 1 any)
Maybes
2 Pacifism - Enchantment Aura -> Enchanted creature can't block or attack 1 Rouge's Passage - Land -> Tap to add a colorless mana or tap and tap 4 to make target creature unblockable this turn 1 Champion of Lambolt - creature 1/1 -> when another creature you control enters the field put a +1/+1 counter on Champion of Lambolt. Creatures your opponent controls with power less than champion of Lambolt can't block creatures you control (2 green 1 any)

I don't know very much about colors other than Black so I can't really give advice, but a quick google search gave me this. Similar results from the same website (probably the best MTG forum on the web) you can see here. I forgot about Thragtusk, which was a major card in the last Standard rotation. A 5/3 for 5 is decent, but it has a good Enter the Battlefield effect and produces a token when it dies which ties in to the rest of your deck.

Thanks man, but I've done my research. ^_^ A few of those recommended cards just got rotated out of standard. I had been thinking about adding some ramp but first turn experiment one/Dryad seems like a much nicer option especially since unlike most decks... I'm not really ramping up to anything. Once I get up to 2 a good portion of my beats are already playable. At 3 I get only 3 more creatures. At 4 my advent wurms are playable...
A turn 3 Advent wurm on the end phase/opponents attack step would be pretty sweet doh.
A large portion of my wins come from the fact that I play 6 one sided fogs with populate. Fog isn't normally something you want to use competitively, but I find myself using much of my deck on the end step of my opponent's turn anyways...the fog is just a bonus "if I need it" sorta thing.

Looking at some of these recent lists makes me really want to play Standard again. I really shouldn't though. It may be cheaper than it was when I stopped but it's still more than I should spend on a hobby. I do think it'll stay cheaper to play standard while Theros is in rotation because of the devotion mechanic encouraging monocolor strategies (lands are almost always where most of the money goes). Compare the winning list I posted above to Wafo-Tapa's list. Also, Wafo-Tapa on the pro tour again? He got suspended a while ago, has it really been that long?
Still, blue devotion looks really fun for a non-control deck. The blue god is pretty obviously the best one (anyone who doesn't think scrying before your draw every turn is super powerful has never played with/against Sensei's Divining Top), and the synergy with the bident is amazing. If I were to start playing again I would probably play that deck, maybe without the mutavaults to save 60 bucks (I might actually have one lying around though...). If I started playing standard, that's what I would probably play.

aids, I thought of you when I watched this... Timestamped btw. Wow, I couldn't make the t= work in tags before. You just paste the url and it works? Good to know. I don't know if you know or care, but that guy on the left (Chapin) is one of the more important pros/deck designers in recent history (inducted into the Hall of Fame last year). Total bro. And obviously right about blue if you aren't drawing cards what are you even doing lol in unrelated news I went over to my shelf and found, covered in dust, around half of an unopened Innistrad booster box (maybe 25 or so boosters). I bought it to play some sealed with a good friend of mine I haven't seen in many months. What do the bros think? Do I give in to nostalgia and open them?

You could, there are a few money cards in that set. Might get lucky. Could also try your luck selling the boosters on ebay and putting the money towards a full box if you wanted to do that instead. Looks like the asking price for one Innistrad booster is 5-6 bucks (not sure if they are getting that price, though) so if you had 25 you could easily pick up a full box of Theros with money to spare. If you go with opening them, let us know what you get!

There's 24, just counted. I probably wouldn't buy a box, but a hundred bucks would get me close enough to a real deck that I could maybe justify spending the rest. I've never sold anything on ebay, how hard is it?
