Here is the problem though: while one single critics can be ignored, the aggregated score across the board still has very powerful influence. On both gamerankings.com and metacritic.com, the aggregated score is shown as below 80. For a new IP, scores at this level will discourage casual players from picking up the game, hence further weaken Destiny's chance of challenging CoD:AW (PS4 is the only platform I can see Destiny having a chance). I am a little bit puzzled by the low review score. There are other games that fell short on the story front, arguably worse than Destiny, but yet earned significantly better scores, e.g.: Titanfall, CoD, etc (I did not play Watch Dogs, but from what I can tell the story is fairly uninteresting as well). Even if I put my huge fondness of Bungie and Destiny aside, I feel Destiny is at least on par with these games. On this front, I agree with ChloeB42 (Alexcalibur42), Destiny's huge hype might have played a negative role, and pumped the critics to be overly harsh with their reviews. The reviews for this game are a complete joke. IGN just released theirs and gave it a 7.8, the same score as Wolfenstein: The New Order. Battlefield 4, with it's terrible story and broken-for-months-laggy-as-hell clusterfuck of a multiplayer experience (which I did really enjoy when it actually, you know, worked) got an 8.5. I mean, does anyone honestly think Destiny doesn't absolutely blow those games out of the water? Bottom line is the game got judged based on hype and expectations, not for the (fantastic, in my opinion) game that it is. That, and the people reviewing obviously haven't put in enough time to even give a fair review anyway. Saying all the classes play alike? To an extent, sure, you shoot stuff with all 6 subclasses, but I notice a big difference between playing a Gunslinger (that I just maxed out) and a Bladedancer, and those are both Hunters! I'm sure there will be an even larger difference once I get a Titan and Warlock leveled up. Story was bad? Ok, they're adding new story missions already next week with the Queens Wrath stuff, and I think they left it open ended for a reason, not just because it's a bad story. This is only the beginning. There are some flaws, especially in regard to the ability to easily communicate with other players unless they're in your fireteam, and maybe Bungie could have held everyone's hand a little more and explained all the leveling/engram/gear/light/whatever systems better. Still, I don't see any way in which the flaws in Destiny are worse than the obviously rushed and unfinished/unrefined Battlefield 4.

Again, set aside the critics reviews. People are assigning to much importance to them. They can only tweak sales +/- a few points in either direction. So they are somewhat meaningless at this point. What you (and others) should be looking at is what Witty brought up, the overall customer feedback. It's not anywhere near what people thought it would be. Basing that on two things: One, what places like Metacritic are showing. And two, the gap between beta sign up/pre-order sales projected, and what sales actually were.
People didn't like the game as much as some people on this board like it. That is reality.
I'm kind of a neutral person, so I think my take is pretty fair. I am playing it right now. Started last night and got to level 9. My thoughts? My initial fears about not understanding the dungeons & dragons stuff was somewhat overblown but I think I have taken in more than I realize from browsing threads on here. I can see where casuals are going to be like 'wtf'? Even something as simple as defense points. What is max? Do I just keep taking the higher defense value boots, jackets and helmets? What's the point of lower value one's? Guns? Why does my shotgun not start with ammo? There's just no explanation of ANYTHING. Not a game killer for me though.
The MP? I played about ten games last night. Good lord the shotgun spam. I do feel like I am horrendously overmatched being low level, continually playing level 25 guys. That kind of sucked but that's MP playing there. You have to take your lumps. Overall, not a bad playstyle, but again, insta-deaths with shotguns, juggled with massive TTK's with the base guns, where it felt like entire clips were needed to knock down a shield. And if you don't know the maps, you can't play shotguns. Frustrating.
Here's a small gripe. I had fun on the PvE, more than I expected. But one of the strengths of the game is supposedly the campaign/PvE co-op. Play and do PvE with friends. Sounds good in theory. Here's my reality last night. I played solo and had some stranger do a mission with me. He was level 21. I just walked through the dungeon and did nothing. Grouped up with some friends in a fire team. One was level 24. I cleaned out all the earth missions pretty much shooting his scraps. Me getting like 30 klls, he got like 400. Fun? Sort of. Epic 'best game ever' fun? No. I just watched them clean out the dungeon, but I felt good getting whatever it is I won (my level went up, so I assumed I got something)
But the above said, I didnt' really care though that much about the above quality fun as I got sucked into this mindset. I was hurried to level. It seems like the only goal really is to try and race as fast as you can to get to level 25. Which circles back to this point........the problem with the 'brilliant endgame' explanation for why this game is great. If the best part of the game is this mega fun/reward one gets with the 'brilliant endgame', then where's the fun along the way? Take my experience last night. I raced/hurried to level 2. Then raced/hurried/grinded up to get to level 5 (for the MP), just following higher level people up. Then tried to race hurry up to get to 7. Now I feel pressured to race/hurry to grind up to level 25, so I can do the 'brilliant endgame'.
Speaking for myself, I think I need to just step away and play by myself. Find my own speed, my own pace, and actually try to enjoy the scenery along the way. Not get caught in that trap I was in last night. I think that hurts the game. It chases people away. Everyone is racing to get to level 27? Level 28? The game has been out a week. Come on. CoD is a grinding game, but there's never any stressed out feeling to get higher faster. You get there, when you get there. If Destiny pushes the 'brilliant end game' to much, you simply kill casuals and chase them away. That is reality.

The race to level up is all in what each individual person makes of it. No reason to feel stressed about getting to max level in a week unless you were trying to be one of the first groups to beat the nightfall strike, or raid, or whatever. My first week I did exactly what you're talking about doing. Just played story stuff stuff and explored with my brother at our own pace rather than rush through. Now that the story stuff is done, there's more of a push to keep leveling so we can actually do the more difficult content to earn some good rewards, which should level us further, which in turn allows us to level more and take on more content, so forth and so on.
I definitely would not recommend doing story missions with guys that highly over-leveled for the content you're working on. Takes all the fun out of it when you stand there and they can 1 hit melee everything except the toughest enemies, who they have to melee twice or 3 times, leaving you with nothing to do. I'm up to 25 with my Hunter, but just started a Titan (level 3) and will be starting a Warlock at some point, so if you decide you want to team up with somebody at/around your level let me know (assuming you're on XBONE at least).

A couple times last night, a high level guy was like this, " let me through, I am really good at this game" type of attitude. Seriously? The mixing of levels is a bit much. You aren't good. You have just grinded a sh1t-ton more than the lower level guy, and now your online character is stronger.

Rushing is cultural, it's not the game's fault. Personally, I could care less. I'm going to enjoy the game at my own pace. That's not to say I don't like leveling up and getting loot, ect. But if you want to enjoy the story missions don't team up with a high level. In MMOspeak that's power-leveling, and it's not something you generally do for fun. I definitely recommend playing the game for fun first, and then only rushing when you feel like it rather than in response to pressure from friends or anything.
I do every story mission first solo or with my brother or friends, and not with any overlevled characters because I want to enjoy it. Later if I redo any missions I might rush through them or something, though I don't really repeat story missions all that much, mainly because I already will have to repeat them for my other two characters. (On them I rush if I feel like it, but if I like the mission I'll just piddle through at whatever pace feels fun, and maybe even spend more time exploring than I originally did.)
As for PvP being very low level definitely feels like a handicap, but it mostly lets up pretty fast. I played several games last night at level 11 and 12 and even though I don't even have any blue gear I mostly felt like I held up okay. I got rolled in a couple of games but in those same games my whole team of Denizens that were mostly in the 25's were also getting trounced so I didn't feel like it was due to my level. It is definitely an advantage to be higher level, but it feels like it's mostly more options available rather than strait up more power, not entirely, but close enough that I had fun.
I did notice some shotgun carnage, but I didn't really feel like it was any worse than CoD and if you were situationally aware you could largely reduce it. Mostly it shut down trying to go in for a melee kill on some players, but otherwise it was just a thing that felt pretty random. I wonder if that was just my experience or if the metagame is actually somewhat different on PS4? Granted, I only played about 3 games as well, so it's not enough to draw any conclusions.

But if you want to enjoy the story missions don't team up with a high level. In MMOspeak that's power-leveling, and it's not something you generally do for fun. Right. I found that out. But I was bringing up that experience to illustrate my experiences and my earlier point about the lack of guiding in the game for casual people (non-MMO people) like myself. I was told it is better with friends. This is a great 'friend experience' game. So I immediately hooked up with people. And that kind of backfired. Not a huge deal as I said, as I was in a rush to level up anyways. The power leveling thing you mentioned probably saved me an hour or two. This part confuses me. I thought I read on here (witty?) that the PvP is completely neutral in terms of one's ability to compete. Like how CoD is. A 10th Prestige player has no advantages over a 1st Prestige, other than skill & experience. Last night, it definitely didn't feel that way. But I have no way of knowing what advantages those other players have on me. Tried to read up on here, but there are to many posts. Someone on the Destiny board griped about this. I noticed it. But it's not a game breaker. Every game has it's quirks. denkirson.proboards.com/thread/7301/5-matches-pvp"5 matches and I've already had enough of the PvP"

PVP is neutral insofar as you don't get advantages on attack and defense. If you're low level with a 70 something attack weapon and a total of 150 defense, you still kill and get killed in the same number of shots as a guy with a 300 attack weapon and 1000 defense. That way there's not a level 28 guy 1 shotting level 5 guys with his exotic hand cannon all game long. High level players will have more class abilities unlocked though, so there's definitely an advantage there.
I'm not sure, so hopefully someone with more PVP experience can chime in here, but I think that you do still get any extra perks afforded by your gear, such as reduced hand cannon reload times, throw grenades farther, and other things of that nature. High level players are of course much more likely to have gear that grants better and/or more perks. I don't know if cooldown times from intellect, discipline, and strength are normalized or if there could be advantages there as well.
Then there's the Iron Banner PVP event coming up in October, in which there is no player equalization whatsoever. Players with the best gear will have a big advantage over players with mediocre gear there.

Destiny largely levels the playing field in normal PvP. It does this in multiple ways. First of all your level does not grant you bonus damage or defense or any such stats in PvP. I believe your armor stat is also ignored as is the attack value of weapons. In other words most of the stats that tend to increase more and more and more as you and your equipment get higher level are ignored.
Intellect, Strength, and Discipline still stack up and are not ignored in PvP, however they are largely normalized because at higher levels it takes more of those stats to reduce your cooldowns by the same amount. That does mean that at the lowest levels you probably lose out somewhat on that regard because you don't get those stats until you get green gear at least, but once you do you can start reducing your cooldowns. There is probably still more advantage here to higher level players who are able to get enough gear to really reduce their cooldowns, but you can always work to improve your gear in this regard. I'll have to leave it to higher level players to speak to how consistently they can keep their cooldown's reduced. Also there is a maximum amount of reduction and stats beyond that are wasted (or you can think of them as an investment for when you level up). This can be powerful, but it's something you can work on and customize at nearly any level.
Weapon stats such as impact, rate of fire, ect DO still affect PvP, but are also fairly normalized across levels with higher level gear mostly getting damage bonuses due to the higher attack value and for being a higher tier, but that's pretty much all PvE. The PvP damge formula is much simpler and is mostly just impact, crits, and damage drop off... in other words very similar to CoD.
Having said that gaining XP allows you to unlock skills for your subclass and to unlock various special attributes for weapons and armor. The ones that modify things like attack won't do anything for PvP since it modifies an ignored stat, but there are tons which have affects that do work in PvP. These are where higher level weapons and equipment can still be better than lower level stuff in PvP... but not always. In other words you need to look at the base stats and the upgrades on a weapon to decide if it's good for PvP. Just because it's a higher level weapon than another doesn't necessarily make it better for PvP. So a lot of this stuff is just sidegrades or things that are good for PvE, but not great in PvP. Being higher level means you have more options, though. Because a great weapon in PvP never becomes obsolete no matter what level you are, it will still perform the same. In PvE this is not true. If you don't upgrade to higher level and higher attack weapons in PvE you will be underpowered.
Then there are the subclasses. You don't unlock the other 3 subclasses until you've reached level 15 with at least one character. You could consider them to be mere sidegrades as well, but it offers a lot more options to people who have access to them, and they may not be particularly well balanced as of yet since they weren't available in beta. I know we lost a game literally in the last seconds because 5 of us were defending a cap point and then just got obliterated by a bladedancer. Those five kills were enough for them to take the victory. Granted maybe a novabomb or something could have had the same effect. I dunno.
So, anyway. If you're very low level going into PvP... yes, yes you are underpowered... a bit. You can get kills, but you're missing out on a couple of things. If you have at least got green equipment and all your key subclass abilities it's not as big a deal, however. Some higher levels have some more options, but you can still kill them. It's basically like CoD level unlocks at that point. Higher levels gives you more stuff, but they put a lot of the best equipment really low on the unlocks on purpose. Destiny probably skews a little more towards higher levels, but I didn't really feel underpowered at level 11 playing against 25's.

I think am going to be done with PvP for a while lol. Just stick to PvE. I am still level 9.

(We probably should leave Destiny specific discussions to threads on the subboard. After all, this is a CoD subboard and lots of bros here don't give a crap about Destiny ). Let's go back to the evaluations of Destiny, from a non-nutrider point of the view. 1) I never cared about review ratings of metacritic.com, because it is so out of whack. I am a big fan of ratings from the community, provided it is reasonably accurate. The problem with metacritic.com is that I have never seen a user rating there even remotely accurate for the quality of the game (for the last 2 years when I started checking there). Multiple reasons may contribute to this: a) Attack of the "fan boys". Any platform exclusive titles will be bashed by the players of the "opposing" platforms. These guys will jump there and give 0 ratings without even knowing what the game is about; b) It is often dominated by extreme views. No games deserve a rating of 0 but unfortunately 0 ratings are pretty pervasive; Ideally (but practically impossible), there should be a minimum play hour requirement before a gamer is allowed to rate a game, say 20 hours. More for games with investment system (MMO, Destiny, etc) Compared with this I would trust critics review more. 2) Putting my bias of Destiny aside, I see huge discrepancies of how people review Destiny vs. other games. a) Destiny vs. Halo Halo consistently gets solid review scores, often at 90s and high 80s. Minus the less interesting story line, game play wise Destiny is much more fun (than say Halo 4, which is rated at ~ 87), with better explorable world, AI variety and intelligence, graphics, etc. Sure, Destiny should be held at higher standard (as standard for game quality should keep rising as time progresses), but I don't see why it should be at 70s instead of 80s; b) Destiny vs. many other games that have arguably worse stories People can argue that Halo has a more interesting story, which IMHO is not as important as game play experience. In that case, let's compare Destiny with Titanfall. I am a huge fan of both so my bias is removed in this comparison. If you think Destiny's story is bad, you'll laugh at Titanfall's. This did not prevent reviewers to give Titanfall an aggregated score of 86. Titanfall does offer some great innovations in game play, but Destiny is a much more polished games with lots more content. I don't see how Destiny is a much inferior game at all. From a neutral point of view, I would have expected a rating between 85 - 90, when compared with other games.

I think with sites like Metacritic, it all flushes out in the end. Every game is ALWAYS going to have a certain pct of players give the game extreme scores. While no game deserves a '0' rating (like many are giving Destiny), zero scores are a common score used on there, mostly by buyers whose expectations were not met. It's not like Destiny is the first game to have this happen. There are no guidelines for how to scale your score. And with that, while no game deserves a '0' score, very few games if any deserve a '10' and I see plenty of scores going in that direction with Destiny too. This game is no where remotely close to being a '10'. It's just not that ground breaking or new.
So for the most part, every game gets rated on a love/hate scale. Lots of 10's and 0's. The amount of them on each side balance out to give that average user score. A case might be made that Destiny has a bit more 0's & 10's, and that might be due to the sheer amount of hype Activision put on the game. The bigger you hype something, the bigger the fall if it doesn't hit a home run.
To be fair, I read probably 100 of the user scores in Metacritic. I really didn't see that many nutty people. A lot of the people giving it zeros gave very thorough and well thought out reasons why they didn't like it. And in most instances, it seems their low score was mostly due to expectations Actvision gave them, that were not met.

(We probably should leave Destiny specific discussions to threads on the subboard. After all, this is a CoD subboard and lots of bros here don't give a crap about Destiny ). Well, to be fair, this thread is about sales. What video game coming out this year will end up getting the most PFS'ers to buy it. We've had a few games come out so far that flopped. One that did decent but had no chance due to one console (TitanFall), and Destiny was the odds on favorite to do it. If we have to pick a challenger, it was Destiny by default. Just my opinion here, but I think it's perfectly reasonably to discuss 'why' it's sales didn't match up to what it's analysts and others thought it would get based on beta downloads and pre-orders. That's a good path for the thread to take. The last dozen plus posts seem right on target. Was it critics that slowed down momentum? Was it people got a chance for the beta, and didn't follow through on their orders? Or were it's sales right in line, and projections were just unreasonable?

Talking about Destiny is totally fine, as long as we don't get into detailed discussions or passionate debates of why some bros think it is one of the best games and try to convince others it is indeed the case, while some other bros who tried it and decided it is not to their liking and refused to be convinced by the former group.

I think Destiny is a great game with some weaknesses and it's not for everybody, but it's definitely not likely to outsels CoD unless AW bombs, at least in the short run. Long term is far too difficult to predict, but it looks like CoD's still the king of the roost (at least in units sold) until proven otherwise.

vgchartz has released 09/13 weekly numbers for USA, which is the first week of Destiny release. Although vgchartz is becoming less and less accurate (at least seems to me), it might be interesting to look at the Destiny's number-of-copies-sold-in-USA nonetheless:
PS4: 1,074,010 XONE: 846,613 X360: 354,620 PS3: 154,432
Total: 2.4 million copies sold in US.
Total number of copies sold to the rest of the world won't become available until 1 week later.

Destiny isnt comparable to COD. End discussion. Treyarchs W@W 2 will be far better than AW. Its probably the only game I'm barely looking forward to at the moment. Since the PS3 / Xbox 360 came out, I've looked forward to (excluding COD) exactly 6 games and was disappointed in most of them. I was highly disappointed in all CODs post MW2. Those games were GTA4 & RE5, RFOM2, Killzone 2, Starhawk & BF4. Its almost killed gaming for me. Nothing is good anymore. Remember when games were good on NES, SNES, PS1 & PS2? SMB series, Zelda series, Metroid series, Mega Man series, Contra series, RE series, MGS series, GTA3+ series. Now nothing like those games come out. Ever since "next-gen" and the world of "online" gaming exploded, gaming has been ruined. Now they routinely launch unfinished games, cause hey...we can patch them later. They focus mostly on DLC & $$, as opposed to people actually enjoying the game. And somehow, which is most mind boggling to me, all of these game's connections have gotten worse every year. You'd think with most people on high speed internet these days (USA) and the better technology, things would improve. Nope, opposite. Its AIDs + tax.

Give GTAV a chance. Red Dead Redemption is good if you never played it. I loved Saints Row The Third. (4 is a glorified expansion... still kinda fun, but spent the whole game wishing I was still playing 3 and just going through the motions.) I like the Bioshock series, your mileage may vary. Oh, Titanfall on 360, XBONE, or PC is fantastic.
That's a semi random list of some things I've enjoyed. There's a lot more, but that's off the top of my head.
Nostalgia is nice and all, and I have TONS of fond memories of old NES games and even older stuff like Intellivision and Combat!. heh (I'm old.) But we see the past through rose colored glasses. For every Super Metroid there were hundreds of horrible, forgettable games. And we do forget them, then look back and think things were better then. But it wasn't. There are good games today and there were bad ones back when. Things are just different. In some ways it's better now, because you can still play the great oldies via emulators if you want, plus there are tons of 8 bit style indie games now and some are really good too.

I don't mean this in a smart-azz replay sort of way, but perhaps you need to find a new hobby if every game you have tried in the past few years is like 'AIDS + TAX'. You know? Maybe it's time to try weight lifting, biking or the book of the month club. GTA V just kicked some azz. Great great great game.

No offense but you sound either cynical as fuck or depressed as fuck. "Nothing is good anymore."

I didn't list GTA 5. I didn't look forward to it. GTA4 was bad, so why get my hopes up. But I did buy it and play it. It was 100x better than GTA 4, as they went back to how the old versions were controlled / played. I liked it. Finished it and traded it in.
But I am cynical as fuck. No doubt. I have other hobbies and have fun with some games. I have almost 300 hours of BF4, which is a pretty good game, now that they have fixed a lot of the connection issues. I spent a lot of time on COD4 & MW2. Spent about 2000 hours on Warhawk. Things just get old and player counts drop and its time to move on. To me (and many other people) the newer games just haven't lived up to the hype and have actually gone backwards IMO. Its become far too much about making $$ and not enough about making a good game.

Well there's your problem. I thought last gen had a wide variety of amazing games. Bethesda alone has yet to disappoint me.

I haven't yet played the Fallout series. I might. Heavy Rain was good, but was more like a choose your own adventure movie really. The Uncharted series is just okay. I guess I can say I am looking forward to the next MGS game. Kojima has spent like 6 years on it.

Fallout is great if you like the TES games from Bethesda. The RPG mechanics are different using a simplified version of the original SPECIAL system used in Fallout, but the engine is the same as the TES series games so much is familiar if you've played Morrowind, Oblivion, and/or Skyrim. Far from perfect, but then again Fallout 3 & Vegas as well as Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are just about the most modded games ever. If there's just about anything you wish was changed or different in those games odds are pretty damn good somebody else thought so too and made a mod for it.

vgchartz has released 09/13 weekly numbers for USA, which is the first week of Destiny release. Although vgchartz is becoming less and less accurate (at least seems to me), it might be interesting to look at the Destiny's number-of-copies-sold-in-USA nonetheless: PS4: 1,074,010 XONE: 846,613 X360: 354,620 PS3: 154,432 Total: 2.4 million copies sold in US. Total number of copies sold to the rest of the world won't become available until 1 week later. vgchartz global Destiny sales data for first 5 days: PS4: 2,265,469 XONE: 1,373,498 X360: 543,895 PS3: 371,293 Total: ~4.5 million copies sold. Not sure how much we can trust this number though. On the CoD:AW front, 7 weeks prior to launch, Preorders in USA has not picked up much steam yet: XONE: 146,480 X360: 108,524 PS4: 87,698 PS3: 46,629 Total: ~389K not including PC Probably many players plan to wait until after launch to pick it up.

That actually sounds very accurate Witty. On the prior pages, I already estimated 5.4 million units sold over the first five days. $325 million divided by $60 = 5.4 games sold. That's probably the upper boundary number. I think you and some others said that VG is no longer measuring digital, so 4.5 is the rock hard lower band. Accounting for game discounts, bundles, things like, we are probably pretty safe in saying the actual true number of games in player's hands was around 4.9 to 5.2 million. Solid showing by Destiny.

Just a note so I don't mislead: I am only speculating that vgchartz is not tracking digital sales, no hard proof at all.

Just a note so I don't mislead: I am only speculating that vgchartz is not tracking digital sales, no hard proof at all. "all sales estimates on VGChartz are arrived at via a number of proprietrary and ever-developing methods: Passively polling end users to find out what games they are currently purchasing and playing Polling retail partners to find out what games and hardware they are selling Using statistical trend fitting and historical data for similar games Studying resell prices to determine consumer demand and inventory levels Consulting with publishers and manufacturers to find out how many units they are introducing into the channel All data is regularly checked against manufacturer shipments and data released publicly from other tracking firms to ensure accuracy. VGChartz holds no responsibility for the use of our data – any business decisions made are made at your own risk." www.vgchartz.com/methodology.php
