Read an article on IGN that one of the missions for headquarters or whatever is to sit and watch other players open 3 loot boxes. Is that actually a thing? Because holy shit, that is next level stupid.

Yeah, totally agreed. I think some of that too is going to come down to the fact that a rock-solid PvP game is going to retain a lot of players for a long time without a ton of resource allocation. No matter how great or how much PvE content they create, the hardcore players are going to blow through it way quicker than Bungie can create it. If they make PvP into something CoD-level good, though? What do they have to add? Balance patches here and there, new maps every once in a while, maybe a new game mode or two? That has to be a lot easier to come up with and create than new strikes, raids, story, etc.

Bungie has arguably already made two better PvP games than CoD: Halo 2 and Halo 3. I believe they absolutely could make a better PvP game than CoD if they really wanted to (and if ATVI would let them). They're never going to get there with Destiny though, not unless they bite the bullet and make some major changes. Separate PvP and PvE balance, 60 FPS on consoles (not an issue on PC, and the difference is huge and a big reason why CoD feels so much smoother), ranked play, private matches, and dedicated servers would be a start.
I've kind of gone full circle with Halo/Destiny/CoD now. Halo 2 and 3 were basically the only PvP games I played regularly back then, but Halo got dropped as soon as I played Modern Warfare. Halo felt slow as molasses after that, and was almost unbearable to play for me. Now I've played so much Destiny that going back to MW:Remastered was equally as jarring. It's still fun, but I'm not a fan of the "he looked at me first, I died" super quick TTK and twitch shooting anymore, probably because I'm 32 and my reaction speed is not what it once was. The outplay potential just isn't there in a game like that. Granted, D2 lost a lot of outplay potential compared to D1 with all the hand-holding MIDA teams, but you still have more options for getting into or out of an engagement or "outskilling" an opponent than you do in CoD IMO.

Gambling is fine? For a game catered towards teens? What? Well that is the only argument I can kind of agree with (any form of random loot is gambling though so ehhh it gets really thin real fast imho). But that is never the argument that is being discussed around destiny honestly. Still, I don't think kids are the ones spending money on D2 cosmetics. I mean, 5 bucks for 3 engrams? That is not something kids are going to buy. Grinding in game would be more proficient than taking a job and buying silver. The entire game is gambling though isn't it? Get an exotic engram and hope you get the exotic you're missing. Get tokens and hope Shaxx gives you Better Devils. While I'm against any and all "loot crate" systems, Destiny has at least done a good job of actually keeping it to strictly cosmetics (unless you want to count fireteam medallions or rapid summon sparrows which I don't think give very much of an in-game benefit). I do think the option should be there to just straight up buy exactly what you want at any time, rather than having to wait for it to hit the "featured at Eververse" thing in a given week. That being said, this isn't CoD where statistically better gear is locked away behind an RNG paywall, so that's a plus. On the subject, I think I'd read a while back that some court somewhere ruled that loot crates weren't gambling because you're guaranteed to win something out of them, even though that something is very often not the thing you want. That seems hilariously shortsighted to me, but it's also technically correct given the way gambling laws are written. Legal or not, it's still scummy and shouldn't be a thing, but it's going to exist as long as people are dumb enough to keep buying the gosh darn golly gee whiz things.

I don't understand why most all those changes were made. For example, why lower the scoring limit for Control or Clash? Clash was only a 7 to 8 min game at 75...dropping it to 50 will make things a lot shorter. A five minute game? What's the point? I guess one positive is more game per hour? So I get more crucible tokens per hour? And reducing public event tokens? And bumping up the strikes? I am still not going to do Strikes. It takes well over 20 plus minutes for what is pretty much no prize winnings. Nope. EDIT...kind of said what Heb said. I just don't understand developers. To much nerd shit going on, they need to get off the screens and see how real human beings behave and think. Scoring limits were changed because games rarely go to the score limit unless it's a complete steamrolling. In fact I don't think I've ever seen a Clash game NOT go to the time limit -- most games end in the 30s or 40s. Same thing with Supremacy, except those scores are even lower usually. Control seems to have more games go to the score limit, but again, those are beat downs where it doesn't really matter. I don't think you're going to see much difference outside of those complete curb-stompings that might end 15-30 seconds sooner than they would have. Keep in mind the token adjustments are only for faction rallies. I don't think you were around for the first faction rally so you're not going to notice any changes there anyway.

LOL @ the faction rally changes. Strikes still aren't close to rewarding enough even after the public event and enemy supply nerfs which absolutely weren't needed in the first place. All they had to do was make strikes and crucible matches similarly rewarding for the time invested, and they still managed to screw that up. Anyone can easily run 2-4 heroic events in the time it takes to do one strike. Like who at Bungie looks at those numbers and thinks those ratios are even close to correct? I mean really. When anyone who plays the game with any regularity can take one look at those numbers and know in 5 seconds that they don't make sense, it really makes you question what the fuck Bungie is doing, doesn't it?

THebb has mainly been playing South Park for the last month or so. He's just at the point where he doesn't care to do much of anything on Destiny. If we can get a group together for a raid or PvP he'll jump on, but probably won't be on much otherwise. If you see me on playing crucible, send me an invite. I forget to even check who's on most of the time and end up solo PvPing a few games before bed. I may or may not have a mic though depending on if the wife is hanging out on the couch with me or not.

I’m splitting time between Xbox and PC. If there’s actually people online to play with on Xbox, that’s where I’ll be. THebb is exclusively an Xboxer.

I don't pay super close attention to what kind of lobby makeup I get, but I do check once in a while. I'm seeing a lot of solo players and quite a few 2 person parties. Very few 3-stacks or 4-stacks. I was pretty surprised TBH. The number of people who've seemingly followed the "solo queue sucks, all I match are full teams" narrative seems way out of line with reality. I think a lot of people are getting stomped by 4 randoms and assuming they were up against a party when really it's just the shitty matchmaking putting 4 good players on one team and 4 ok-ish players on the other.

Emperor's Respite is an objectively bad map for control, regardless of anyone's feelings about linear vs triangle flag layouts and what's more boring. The team that spawns at A to open the match is given a huge advantage for doing nothing besides being lucky, and has to really fuck things up to lose. It's unfair and unbalanced and no multiplayer map should be designed in such a manner. I don't think that's even debatable.
I'll take the triangle side of the argument. A good and well-organized team should be able to split 2-2 and hold 2 zones fairly consistently and not be stuck playing ring around the rosie swapping zones all the time. That said, even if constant zone swapping does take place, at least everyone is moving around and doing something instead of sitting in one spot holding down a lane on a headglitch and spawn trapping. There is nothing more frustrating IMO than being stuck in a spawn trap and having to stare at the respawn timer over and over, and as a fairly aggressive player, I don't find many things more boring than tactical loitering a lane to keep a spawn trap going.

Thursday should work for me. Challenge mode seems simple enough and the guaranteed raid drop sounds kinda nice. I’m up to 250 on PC for anyone that’s keeping score.

Happy Elite user here as well. Had yet another Scuf stop working correctly with the paddle assigned to jump starting to give out. Same story within 6 months every time, and I’m tired of fucking around with them. I’ll probably send it in for the $25 repair again, but this will be the last time.
Anyway, the Elite controller is awesome. Great feel, great paddle ergonomics, great functionality with all the easily interchangeable parts. Frankly this is the controller that should come stock with every new console IMO. Better price than a similarly equipped Scuf too, and I’d be shocked if its not much more reliable given that it’s a 1st party product.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to use it much longer. The easily interchangeable parts are really nice, but easily removeable small parts and an 11 month old who’s getting more mobile every day are not a good mix. My loss is THebb’s gain. I think I’m going to give Battle Beaver Customs a shot. They allow you to send in your own stock controller and they’ll upgrade it however you want. I’ve been hanging on to a dawn shadow edition controller for a while that I had planned to send in to Scuf before their send in program got cancelled. BBC also uses actual buttons on the back instead of paddles, which I’m hoping will lead to way better longevity than Scuf. We’ll see about that I guess.

Yeah that map is complete shit for control. Your only hope if you spawn on C is to try to take the tunnel on the right and sneak back to cap A and hopefully flip the spawns. If you can’t get it to work, you lose, and it’s usually not close.

There would be viable groups if everyone asking whether there are viable groups stopped asking if there were viable groups and started playing the game again. Not that I blame anybody for not playing given the current state of the game, but me and Stone are the only Xboxers I ever see on anymore. 50,000 people used to live here, now it’s a ghost town.

Quickplay is supposed to be purely connection based, with competitive being mostly connection based with some SBMM components. I wonder how true that actually is. Also, yuck at those stats. Pick a sample that makes be look better next time! LOL.
As far as mobility/resilience/recovery, I'd say a lot of it depends on personal preference and what kind of opponents you run into. I agree a lot of times it's probably not going to matter much, but having 4 resilience and forcing MIDA users to hit an extra headshot or 180 rpm scout users to hit 5 shots instead of 4 can be a big deal if that's what the whole other team is running. I'd also say that while the strafe difference between 0 mobility and 10 mobility is pretty big, the difference between 0 and 3 or 4 isn't going to be nearly as noticeable, and aim assist is going to diminish some of those gains as well. I think you're kind of just splitting hairs either way at that point.
Anyway, something to keep in mind for the future is that the 140 rpm hand cannons go from 1h3b to 2h2b at 6 resilience. When hand cannon bloom gets adjusted (and I say when because I don't see any way it doesn't happen with how much everybody who's played PC raves about how great HCs feel there), that might actually be a big deal because I think hand cannons will be everywhere like they were in D1.

Yeah, I think hand cannons are almost assuredly going to get readjusted on console based on the overwhelmingly positive reaction to how much better they feel on PC. Whether that means bloom is removed or toned down, or aim assist is reduced, or damage falloff happens quicker I don’t know, but I’d be really surprised if we don’t see something changed with the first seasonal sandbox tuning.

CoD board is up a bit, gents. That being said, from what I can gather (i.e. the one YouTube vid I watched earlier) they’re going more of the MW:R route where you can get scrap or whatever and use it to craft stuff you want if you don’t get it to drop. So less stupid than only being able to get stuff directly from loot crates, but still fairly stupid.

...welcome to a month ago? But, that does remind me of something I saw floating around the other day (found it: youtube vid by CammyCakes) that I wanted to try. Hunters can't get their recovery stat above 6, I think. So instead of dumping basically everything you have stat-wise into a stat you can't get that much out of anyway, just ignore recovery. Leave it at zero or 1, hit 4 or 6 resilience, and pump the rest into mobility. The kicker here is that Arcstriders have a perk in the lower tree that grants massively increased grenade and melee recharge rates when you're critically injured, i.e. your shield is gone and your health is in the red. Well with such low recovery, pretty much any time you win a close fight with a smidge of health left, you get to take full advantage of those enhanced grenade and melee recharge rates. You get a LOT of free grenades this way, and melees too I suppose but those don't get used as often. Now add in Lucky Raspberry, which gives you a ~30% chance to automatically get a grenade back when you hit an enemy with an arcbolt grenade. If you hit multiple enemies, which is very likely with the current team shot meta, your chances go up even more (51% at 2, 65.7% at 3, 76% at 4 if my math is correct). I think this actually has the potential to be really, really good. Too bad Lucky Raspberry is the only Hunter exotic I’m still missing . Anyway, I've rambled enough, here's the vid: EDIT: Holy Foxtrot, 2 more thoughts. 1. This build is going to awesome on PC where the Arcstrider super is actually pretty decent and hand cannon cleanups are much easier, and 2. Can you imagine a whole fireteam doing this at once? Like, say, next Iron Banner? Get your shit together, boys, arc bolts are back on the menu!

Yeah, that's definitely a start, and there's some pretty rad looking stuff shown. Unfortunately most of what they talked about is cosmetic stuff from bright engrams, which isn't exactly at the top of most people's lists as far as what needs to be improved. The ornaments and having to unlock them based on completing a certain requirement is a good step, though. It sounds like they're going to adjust the token system, and hopefully that extends beyond just the Iron Banner as far as being able to direct purchase items from vendors goes. It's a step in the right direction if nothing else. All hail the live team!

I'm actually going to retract what I previously said. PC isn't the same game. There's no bloom on hand cannons when using m&kb (still exists with a controller though apparently), which means no ghost bullet BS, which means hand cannons are going to be top tier. Also apparently the Arcstrider super is fairly decent cuz it's kind of hard to shoot an Arcstrider who's dodging around like a madman without any aim assist. Interesting.

Heh. XBOX will still be my main platform as long as THebb is there (assuming he's ever actually playing Destiny...hint hint). I'm already in for both DLCs there, but only bought the standalone game for PC. I can't speak for anybody else.

My understanding is PvP is better on PC. And the obvious graphical improvements. But otherwise it’s the same game with the same shortcomings. I expect the PC wank will stop after about 2 weeks. Why would it be better? 60 fps? Uncapped frame rate, much larger field of view, better graphics, superior aiming and turning precision with m&kb (although I'm just using an XBOX controller for now). It's still the same game with the same shortcomings, but it undoubtedly feels and plays a ton better on the PC, IMO.

That may well be all in my head though. Better Devils (kinetic, Shaxx/Crucible drop) is pretty highly regarded, although I don't really like it for some reason, probably just me. Old Fashioned (kinetic, not sure where this one comes from) has kill clip and can 3 shot (2h1b) with it active which is pretty awesome. At 150 rpm, Dire Promise (kinetic, Dead Orbit or Cayde treasure map chests) was the only one I thought felt good. 110 rpm hand cannons can kill in 3 shots if you get all crits, but that's easier said than done, and I'm not a fan of their slow handling and low stability. How can any pistol three shot? A two head, one body? Even a 110rpm HC, which typically delivers the most firepower, would do under the above example 71, 71 and 47. That's 189 damage. I suppose in theory that would kill a person with resilience of 1 or lower, but almost no one goes that low. Unless I am wrong, it seems like a HC is going to need five body shots (45 x 5 = 225) to put someone down. Or one head plus three body (61,45,45,45 = 196) Like I said, Old Fashioned with the kill clip perk active. It gives 30% bonus damage for a few seconds when you reload after getting a kill. That means 79 head and 53 body, so 211 on 2h1b.

Heh. My download got interrupted overnight apparently so I've got 2/3s of the damn thing left to go, which given the load being placed on those servers now I imagine may take a while. Meant to check it this morning but forgot. Oh well. I guess that prevented me from spending my whole lunch break staring at a login screen so that's a plus.

Yeah, the whole PvP power level advantage thing was pretty pointless anyway. It basically never happened outside the first Iron Banner after a power level increase. It was never even a thing for regular crucible. What's the reasoning for it? The only purpose it serves is to artificially handicap someone new to the game or someone who hasn't had enough time to get up to speed after a power increase.
