Are all "ranks" shared across characters: Vanguard, Crucible, Cryptarch, and the 3 Faction specific ones? How about timed events like Queen's Wrath and Iron Banner?

I thought I have the same rank of something on all 3 of my characters (Cryptarch?). I must have been mistaken.

After level 20, how much XPs to exchange for 1 Mote of Light? Is there a progress meter visible somewhere?

When doing story missions, is it normal for enemies to respawn so darn quickly in some areas?
Example: There are times I'm clearing an area of a mob and then attempt to proceed into or past that area, only to run smack into the same mob attempting to resume their patrol position. Not cool when I'm suddenly standing inside a mob of 5-8 enemies that I just downed less than ten seconds prior.

No. It does happen, particularly in areas where the mobs are closish together... the divide for example. But if you take an area... let's say the spawn point in the Cosmodrome... then run left to take out the 4 by the bridge, then run right to take the 4/5 out by the downed ship, then over the hill to the cargo bay with the 10ish mobs, then over the lake to take out the 5 or 6 by the downed semi... expect the 4 by the bridge to have repopped and the enemy skyship coming in to repop the 4/5 by the downed ship. This also assumes you are on your own; if there's someone else, they may have made the mobs spawn

My question:
Why do Machine Guns suck?
Yes, they hit hard, but with a piss poor rate of fire and (on my Xerxes C) poor mag, the only reason why I use the gosh darn golly gee whiz thing is when someone resists my autorifle. I just find that by the time I've shot my machine gun mag at them, and start to reload, I may as well as just never stopped using my autorifle (again, assuming no resists) Not to go all COD, but at least the good LMG's had a 100 bullets to pray and spray before a 7 second reload... in Destiny, they're just not worth it.
Do better/high level ones at least give you a decent clip size?

In public areas, story mission or not, respawns often happen pretty quickly once you're outside the area that prevents the respawn.
In non-public areas I can't recall ever seeing enemies respawn in story missions other than places where there are multiple waves of enemies, but even these are usually limited to a specific number of waves or a certain amount of time. Then again I've only gotten as far as a few moon missions with the story. ;3

I personally like the ones with slow RoF + high impact.

Do better/high level ones at least give you a decent clip size? There seems to be 3 MG configurations with increasing RoF and mag size and decreasing impact. IIRC there's the slow hard hitting one with ~30 bullets, a high RoF low impact one at ~70 bullets and a middle of the road one with ~50 bullets. I like the middle of the road one. (This also seems to occur with ARs.)

Reloads are painful on MG's. I generally preload mine and consider it a one off during a fight. In other words I load it once I have ammo then when I decide I need the firepower I'll bring it out and use it, but if it goes dry I just switch back. It's almost never worth loading the damn thing unless you have a place to hide or everything's dead. I didn't find them useful until I managed to get some that I can keep remotely on target, then they started getting more useful. I've been just sticking to the highest impact lowest RoF ones so far, but haven't experimented much. Try a few. They can definitely be powerful in PvP and PvE, but not all are made equal. At higher levels you do get some mods that help mitigate reload or upgrade mag ect, as well.

Then again I've only gotten as far as a few moon missions with the story. ;3 As somebody who have played a lot of story missions (3 times, one on each character, with the last 2 missing some missions on Mars. This is the only area that I can consider myself knowledgeable enough), I totally agree with the above assessment. Public areas are not tied to the missions. They are shared by all activities: story, strike, patrol & raid people all go through these areas. Enemies have pre-determined levels regardless what your level is, and the respawn usually happens very fast. This makes them great targets for "spawn kills", when you have bounties or patrol goals to complete. Private areas are tied to the missions. The levels of enemies are relative to the mission's configuration. I did not notice respawns happening in story missions, which led me to hypothesize that the respawn is turned off. This actually makes things more difficult because you can't just go back and kill some minions and scavenge ammos. Talking about ammo: a not well known fact is that if you exhaust all of your ammos (at least both primary and special), you will be "gifted" with extra ammo. So if you are stuck on lack of ammo, just use them all for an automatic replenishment.

I've heard conflicting reports on the "gift" ammo. Some have said that the game only gives you ammo that has already been dropped from killing enemies in your vicinity but you haven't picked up yet. I haven't seen it confirmed either way or bothered to test it myself though.

I haven't seen it confirmed either way or bothered to test it myself though. I did not intentionally test it either, but I can recall one situation that I exhausted all my ammo and then immediately see ammo in both primary and special slot. I am pretty sure that there are no visible ammos around me at the time, but maybe there are some that I did not see but nearby.

Exhausting ammo does work. Additionally, if you die and respawn or are revived, that replenishes ammo as well.
Sometimes there might be ammo in the area, but you don't know where it is, or don't have a prayer of getting to it and surviving. It's also something to consider if you're between waves of enemies or attacks by a boss and notice you're low on ammo - there have been times I only had half a magazine left, and fired it off so that ammo would replenish before I needed it again.

Do better/high level ones at least give you a decent clip size? Well, in Crucible, they're the best way to go on a long streak. For PvE they're pretty great as well. Bust them out for tougher enemies and bosses. They do the additional damage, and most also do elemental damage, which helps getting down the shields of tougher enemies. At lower levels, I recommend seeing if you can find one of the 38 round ones, as they have a good combination of doing damage while being able to aim. The Focused Fire upgrade is great on these as well (fires slower when ADS, but does more damage). It makes it a little easier to get crits, and as heavy ammo is limited, lets you make the most benefit out of the rounds you have.

I'm fairly certain that the gift ammo is not only from ammo on the ground. I say that because I've used it to get ammo when all ammo had been picked up and no more waves of enemies were spawning at the time to feed me more ammo. (This seems to be the primary reason why bosses have minions IMO, they are literally there to resupply you. heh) Mainly this has been at the spider tank in Devil's Lair, but I've used it in some low level story missions as well when I used all my ammo in a boss fight or something.

Question. What are the official Public event times on each on each of the planets? There's nothing "official", per se. Best place to look is destinypublicevents.com/I'll post a follow-up question. I've found the Devil Walker events in the Divide on Earth, 15 and 45 past the hour to be the best events to hit up. They pretty consistently happen, and start on time, while some of the other events I show up and it just never starts and I've wasted my time. Can anyone recommend good events/locations on the other planets? I'm good on Spinmetal and could use some other materials, and it would be nice to knock out multiple without waiting a half hour between.

Question. What are the official Public event times on each on each of the planets? I have not seen anything official. destinypublicevents.com/ has been used by many players as reference, but the numbers there are reported by the community. The actual times can be several minutes behind and sometimes just not happening probably due to the lack of players in the area. What I did the other day is that I picked my most favorite planets of the day (for that day: Mars, which is my least played planet) and get into patrol. I am not going out of my way to try to follow the schedule, because that can be frustrating (events may not be happening, and I am severely orientation challenged so usually can't figure out the best way to get to where I am supposed to go ). I'll pick an area by 1) how close the next event is supposed to happen, 2) how many players are roaming in the area, and then just do ad hoc missions as well as plant material farming while waiting for the event to happen. Doing this for ~ 30 minutes I can usually get the public event thing out of the way.

Do better/high level ones at least give you a decent clip size? The Hannibal-E is the only non-legendary machine gun I use. I tend to use them for public events as I don't really need The Swarm for them. However, buy The Swarm from the Vanguard Quartermaster if you can. You can get them as a reward for reaching Vanguard Rank 3 as I did on my first character, and then an engram gave me another one in a different element. With The Swarm near enough fully upgraded, you can easily get multiple criticals on big bosses mid-range especially as suppression is high. Recently I took on that massive Hive knight and just ignored the minions and killed him in about 10 seconds.

Did not read it all yet, but try to find a lmg with field scout. I it hands down the most OP in pvp. I got a swarm in a random drop which has it. Instead of 35 + 15 ish reserve rounds I get 60+30 reserve! One out of three/four games I get a 10 killstreak from just one heavy ammo drop!
The crusible handler is selling an lmg with field scout. Don't know if it is as good as the swarm with it, but I am saving up for it (still need an arc lmg)

Also, the one you can buy for 10! Marks from iron banner rank 3 looks also very promising. You can increase the stability with smart drift control, at the expense of range. Which you won't need with the range finder. On top of that you can add field scout , and reactive reload is not that bad!
Also I think there are 4 lmg archetypes. The ones with 25ish clips (the one stated above), the ones with 35ish clip (swarm, fount at vanguard vendor) a 50 ish clip, zombieappocolypse, found at crusible handler, and the ones with 80ish rounds, like you can buy at future war cult)
Personally I liked the 35 and 50 round lmg the most. But the iron banner holders hammer looks good, I am very curious how bad the recoil is. If it only was another elemental damage type....
