Percentage of time played in Crucible by month for a random sample of players on Playstation with more than 5 days hours played: How big is the sample? And how did you derive the data?

My mistake, there were some errors in the last chart, please ignore. This has the correct data, for > 5 days played: The sample was pulled directly from Bungie's API. Sample size of members with over 5 days played was 3,619. To remove weeks with Iron Banner, I would need to re-pull the data by day instead of by month (they do not have an option to pull the data by week). Does anyone have a schedule of the dates Iron Banner occurred?

That's interesting. How are you pulling that data? What is the API?
I'm not sure the Iron Banner stuff would need to be removed. But with that, how many IB's have their been? One per month? Or every other month?
If I am reading that correctly...around 70% of the player base still playing (or that has played) ....devotes less than 10% of their destiny play time, to the Crucible. And that's including the Iron Banner events. If you pull the IB stuff out, the number would drop by an amount (which can only be guestimated)
* A quick additional comment. The above is filtered to only account for people with 5+ days played? Doesn't that kind of skew the results a bit, as most people who put in five days of playtime, do tend to play the PvP more. Most people who tried the game and quit, got stuck in their 20's, grinded out, they tend to not do the crucible. If we include ALL destiny players who have bought this game then (estimate 12 million)...those above numbers are going to plummet by a half to 2/3rds. And if you remove the IB, it might be cut in half again.
* I'll try to look up the IB dates.

I wrote a script to gather and parse through the data so it could be looked at in Excel. API's are systems of protocols that you can use to build apps, etc. DestinyTracker, for example, pulls their info from the API.
Whether or not filtering to only account for people with 5+ days played skews the results depends on what question you are trying to answer. I assumed you guys wanted to focus on what heavy Destiny users thought of Crucible, and eliminate those that purchased it only for the Story or that have not even tried Crucible.

Well, now that you have it, I found it all interesting. Regardless of what we were discussing. I find this stuff interesting. But in regards to the above. I don't think it really is important to discuss 'heavy' users. We were just discussing the Crucible itself. And how it's viewed, it's popularity. And when discussing it, everyone's opinion's matter. The guy who played just a few hours and hated Destiny....as well as the hard-core people like us. You can't remove the former, ...and have an accurate picture. Just my two cents. Nice job on the research there. That is very impressive.

I would be curious to see this, for March.
We know this already. There was an IB from 3-17 to 3-24. We also know that 24% of the players never touched Crucible, and 76% of the players did for the entire month of March. So how much of March's numbers, are influenced by the IB?
could we run the numbers for the IB week?
Could we run the numbers for non-IB weeks?

Here's the info for all users in the sample, having removed the requirement of minimum of 5 days played: I'll look into getting the more recent stats by day.

Nice job Hawk. This is really fascinating to look into. The human behavior elements, mixed with gaming stuff.
What are you initial thoughts on the data, from what you are seeing so far? (I can't dive into it to deeply right now)

Polo's interpretation of said Chart #1: I think the failure of the first Iron Banner in Oct really really kicked the Destiny PVP scene in the balls and it's still pissing blood to this day. I based this on the drop in oct, then the rise back to the usual %age
Polo's interpretation of said Chart #2: I think that now, PVP is considered to be either a fringe or something that you would do to get an exotic weapon.

I would be real curious, as to how many of the 12 million or so buyers of this game, have over 5 days (120 hours of playtime)
Of people over five days of playtime...0% have no playtime on Crucible. Basically, all these people have at least played it (Cruc or IB)
But when you include everyone, the pct of players who never tried Crucible jumps to 41%.
edit..can this be solved by algebra?

I wonder how many of the 0% each month are people who tried it once in previous months and never went back and how many have never tried Crucible at all... But then there are so many questions that would require drilling down I think it's hard to come to many conclusions other than people play much more PvE than PvP. It's interesting that there are enough super hardcore Crucible players to bump the 90%+ number up a bit. Sure it's only a few percent, but out of all Destiny players that's more than a couple and if those hardcore players didn't exist the numbers would just taper down to 1% or 0%... also... I hate those guys. ;p Not much fun playing against people you have literally no chance of beating because they have 100 or even 1000 times as much PvP experience as you do.
I miss the old Halo 2 SBPM... though I'm not sure it would be appropriate in Destiny... at least as is.

Nice job Hawk. This is really fascinating to look into. The human behavior elements, mixed with gaming stuff. What are you initial thoughts on the data, from what you are seeing so far? (I can't dive into it to deeply right now) My opinion is that that before they make any changes to the actual content of PvP, they need to rework the rewards system. In my experience, most heavy players will run the Nightfall, Weekly, and at least Crota on each of their characters. Given the opportunity, they'll also get the Gorgon's chest and do Atheon, and potentially do Crota on both Normal and Hard mode to increase their drops. Because of the inherent social nature of those activities, they will also spend their time helping their friends complete those activities, even if they have already gotten the drops, knowing that at some point, their friends will return the favor. In between, they do Vanguard and Eris bounties to get the XP to level up their new items they had dropped (or purchased), and sometimes the Daily Heroic Story. After that, they'll do Roc Strikes to max out their Vanguard marks and get engrams and glimmer. All that takes a lot of time - an enormous amount. Enough that you can't reasonably expect them to then convince most players to spend additional time playing Crucible. Their problem is that players are getting sick of doing the same things in PvE over and over and over, but simply quitting the game rather than play Crucible. At least part of that has to be attributed to the rewards system and the feeling that playing Crucible is a waste of time. The data has only reinforced these opinions. You would expect more players to be playing Crucible, with the new content drought, but the percentage of players who don't touch Crucible is actually going up. If I were them, I'd consider increasing the XP bonus for Nightfall completion in Crucible significantly, to the point where the average player on the losing team earns roughly the same amount of XP/minute as they would have doing bounties, and the average player on the winning team earns more. I would also prominently display the amount of XP earned in the match in the post-game report, as right now you can't even tell how much you earned (is it equal to your score? I don't even know).

Yes. 21,881 in the sample; 3,619 with over 5 days played; 16.5% Ok. Interesting. I did some napkin calculations and was going to guess 75%. The sample is 83.5%. If we assume that sample is sort of accurate, we get these numbers for a ballpart population of 12 million users of this game(that's a pretty close ballpark) 12,000,000 users of Destiny 10,020,000 played under 5 days 01,980,000 played over 5 days (120 hours)

Correct. I pulled the data for every month from all 21,881 players. I guess with your first chart, those with over 5 days played.....all players sampled played every month. I can't imagine any addicted Destiny player going more than a week without playing. But when sampling all 21,881 players, which includes players with less than five days, is it safe to assume that many of these players missed some months? Like the Feb or March numbers might only total up to like 18,000 people?
|
|
|
Post by TheHawkNY on Apr 9, 2015 17:33:28 GMT -5
Correct. In fact, if my calculations are correct, no month had as many as 17,000 of those players.

Alright, here's the data by week, for that group of players with over 5 days played: Next, the data for all players in the sample, regardless of play time: Then here's a look at the totals by week, first only players with 5 days played (numbers represent time played, in days): Then all players: So while Iron Banner does get some players to participate, it does not appear to have a significant impact on the total amount of time played. The amount of PvP played more than doubles, but that time played comes at the expense of PvE time played. As I said before, the game is so time consuming, they cannot reasonably expect most players to increase their playtime.

I got the Thorn bounty and will have to hit the Crucible... sigh. At least, I can get marks so if there is a nice weapon to buy, I can buy it. I'm not looking forward to this, although I did get the secret handshake shotgun with void damage, so that might help. But one of my more effective PVP weapons was my void plug one.1 so... meh Sorry for the hijack a while back. I suggest doing the Thorn bounty ASAP because I've just read the incoming changes to special and heavy ammo. Hunters are going to be screwed over more by having no void abilities and not everyone Raids so Atheon's Waterhose and the Word of Crota are out of the question for many, plus ARs were hit hard in their latest nerf. I see a lot of complaints about shotguns on Reddit etc and this change might make people who already have Thorn, like myself, even better. Most of the engagements are within Thorn's 2-3HK range and I usually get the DoT to save the additional shot. And it looks like heavy ammo might make machine guns less prevalent, which will be an issue for the Iron Banner bounty. I don't know how much of an impact these changes are going to have, but if it's too hard people will end up using their primaries in shotgun range now. It looks like ammo buffs on armour could help you out as my Hunter has 18 rounds at spawn because she uses an LDR with Field Scout.

Hawk.
Looking at your data. You mentioned pulling data from 21,881 players. If we look at that chart, we can see for the month of March, that 42% of the players did not go into any PvP (or IB), 21% spent 10% of their time there, and 12% spent between 10-20% of their time in the PvP.
Here's what is confusing. So I am trying to match that up with your week by week data. It looks like out of your total sample size of 21,881 people, not that many are playing week to week. Especially in March. In March, it's 1,662, 1,486, 1,510, and 1,307. So out of your pulled sample player base, only around 5.9%(low) to 7.6%(high) of them are still playing in March? Is that how to correctly read those results?
Looking at the week to week, it appears Iron Banner does have a very big influence on those playing. But it's a subtle difference. It would appear IB does NOT get people to come back to Destiny. Those who have given it up, burned out, ...IB isn't bringing them back. Your sample player base (of 21,881 players) shows no material/significant increase to more people playing during IB. But that said. Those who are still playing, it would appear that they most certainly do shift their allocated Destiny time, to include more PvP playing. Both your charts seem to confirm this.
Chart 1 - (raw numbers)
- It would appear less people actually play any destiny, right after the IB week. Destiny burnout? - As said above, it would appear that people are leaving this game. But that could be attributed to DLC deadtime. - While around the same no. of people play during IB week, the number of players who do PvP almost doubles.
Chart 2 - (percentages)
- the above is confirmed by your percentages chart. Around 2/3rds of the active players still playing, don't go in or hardly go into PvP. That seems to be very consistent, at least for March. But during IB week, that pct drops to 54%.

21,881 is the total number of players I pulled data for.
You're misreading the chart. Those numbers are time played in days, not number of players.
Out of the 21,881 players for which I pulled data, 6,038 were active in the 4 week period in March. The total numbers active each week, respectively, were 4,403, 4,048, 3,787, and 3,563.
Iron Banner does not appear to bring people back to the game, at least in a quick look at the data. The week of 3/10, there were 758 players in the sample that played which had not played at all the week prior, for the week of 3/17 it was 720, and for the week of 3/24 it was 711.

Oh ok.
IB may not appear to pull people back into the game, but don't the numbers show that IB does pull people into playing PvP?

Yes, at least the last Iron Banner did. The time played in Crucible more than doubled.

It is a chrome specific browser extension. Best way to take advantage of it is to
1) download and install Google's free Chrome browser on your laptop (or desktop if you don't have a laptop);
2) Open Chrome browser, and click above link to install the extension;
3) Log in to Bungie.net to get to your Destiny profile;
4) Start the extension by clicking its icon on the right upper corner. This is going to display a dedicated page for you to manage items across all of your characters and vault. You can just drap and drop to move stuff around;

Chrome is best pony IMO. ;3 Whenever I use other browsers I feel like I'm back in the 90's with fat ass toolbars and crap taking up tons of my workspace. I like Chrome mainly because it minimizes the UI space. (I also autohide my taskbar in Windows for the exact same reason. I have no need for a quarter inch of my monitor to only get used 5% of the time.)
